CHAPTER 10

Vanessa's arrest should have made me feel safe.

It didn't.

It made Richard Vale dangerous.

His daughter had been charged with child abuse, witness intimidation, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and attempted theft of evidence.

The homicide investigation remained open.

Richard had not been arrested.

Yet.

Agent Chen warned me not to confuse movement with victory.

“A cornered man with resources is still a cornered man.”

So security increased.

The children started therapy.

I stopped going to the office.

And two days later, the DNA results arrived.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.

I was Lily's biological father.

I stared at the document for a long time.

Then I folded it.

No fireworks.

No dramatic revelation.

Just a piece of paper confirming what had already become true in my heart.

I found Lily sitting on the floor coloring.

Noah was beside her doing homework.

I sat down.

“The test came back.”

Noah immediately looked at me.

Lily continued coloring.

“And?” Noah asked.

“I'm her biological father.”

He nodded slowly.

Lily looked up because we had stopped talking.

“What?”

I smiled.

“The mouth-stick test says I'm your daddy.”

She frowned.

“My daddy?”

“If you want.”

She stared at me.

Then at Noah.

“Daniel Daddy?”

I laughed.

“Something like that.”

She climbed into my lap.

“You still Daniel.”

“That's okay.”

She touched my face.

Then whispered experimentally, “Daddy Daniel.”

My throat closed.

Noah smiled.

But I saw sadness behind it.

I reached for him.

“Come here.”

“I'm fine.”

The cursed words again.

“Noah.”

He sighed and moved closer.

I put my arm around him.

“Nothing changed.”

“Something changed.”

“Okay. Something was confirmed.”

He looked down.

“You're really her dad.”

“Yes.”

“And you still want me?”

“More stupid questions?”

He almost smiled.

“That's mean.”

“Good.”

I squeezed his shoulder.

“You're stuck with me.”

Lily raised one hand.

“Stuck!”

We laughed.

For one minute, it felt like a family.

Then my phone rang.

Marcus.

His tone erased the moment.

“Richard filed for bankruptcy protection on three companies.”

“What does that mean?”

“He's moving assets.”

“Running?”

“Maybe.”

Agent Chen thought so too.

Federal teams executed search warrants on Vale Development headquarters that afternoon.

They recovered shredded documents, encrypted drives, and financial ledgers.

But Richard was gone.

His house was empty.

Private jet still in its hangar.

Passport flagged.

No confirmed departure.

A fugitive with money was not a comforting thought.

Three days passed.

Then Calvin asked to see me.

His hospital room was guarded.

He looked better.

Still pale.

But alive.

“You shouldn't have come,” he said.

“Why?”

“Richard knows I'm talking.”

“He already knows.”

“No.”

Calvin looked at the guard outside.

“He knows I'm alive. That's different.”

“What are you saying?”

“He has contingency plans.”

“For what?”

“For everybody.”

He gave me a name.

Thomas Baird.

Richard's longtime accountant.

“Baird kept the real books.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“What does that have to do with us?”

“Michael found him.”

My pulse rose.

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

“Is Baird alive?”

“Last I heard.”

“Then why hasn't he come forward?”

“Because Richard has something on him.”

“What?”

“His son.”

I stared.

“Meaning?”

“His son committed a hit-and-run six years ago. Richard buried it.”

My stomach turned.

“He controls people through secrets.”

“That's how he built everything.”

Calvin looked exhausted.

“But Baird kept insurance.”

“What kind?”

“A ledger showing every bribe, every payoff, every shell company.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because Claire knew.”

My heart jumped.

“How?”

“Michael told her a phrase.”

“What phrase?”

Calvin closed his eyes, trying to remember.

“Something about where truth sleeps under lions.”

I stared.

“That means nothing.”

“It meant something to Claire.”

I called Evan.

Within an hour, we were searching everything Claire had left.

Her letters.

Photographs.

Digital files.

Noah overheard the phrase.

He looked up from a puzzle.

“Under lions?”

“Yes.”

“Mom used to take us to lions.”

Everyone turned.

“The zoo?” I asked.

“No. Library.”

“The library has lions?”

“The big stone ones outside.”

Of course.

The downtown public library.

Two marble lions flanked the entrance.

“Did Claire ever leave you there while she went somewhere?”

Noah shook his head.

Then Lily spoke.

“Mommy floor.”

I crouched.

“What floor?”

She slapped the carpet.

“Floor.”

Noah frowned.

“She means the tiles.”

“What tiles?”

“In the old reading room. Mom used to tell Lily to count the little lions in the floor border.”

Evan was already grabbing his coat.

We contacted Agent Chen.

She met us at the library after closing.

The old reading room had mosaic tiles running along the walls.

Lions appeared every few feet.

We searched for an hour.

Nothing.

Then Noah said, “Mom always sat there.”

He pointed to a long wooden table near a carved stone column.

Agent Chen examined it.

A brass plate underneath carried a memorial inscription.

DONATED BY THE BAIRD FAMILY.

My pulse jumped.

Evan crouched.

“There.”

A tiny keyhole was hidden beneath the table.

The library director stared.

“I didn't know that existed.”

Maintenance opened the compartment.

Inside was a leather-bound ledger wrapped in plastic.

Thomas Baird's name was written on the first page.

Agent Chen turned through it carefully.

Dates.

Accounts.

Initials.

Amounts.

Payments made after Michael's death.

Payments to police officials.

A judge.

Gerald Pike.

Vanessa.

Then Richard.

Hundreds of entries.

Agent Chen looked at me.

“This could collapse his entire network.”

Noah stood beside me.

“Mom found it.”

“Yes.”

He smiled sadly.

“She did it.”

I put my arm around him.

“She did.”

For the first time since this began, I felt something close to hope.

Then Evan's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“The safe apartment's alarm just triggered.”

My blood went cold.

Lily was there with Priya and Grace.

I called Priya.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then my phone received a video.

Lily sat crying in the back seat of a car.

A man's hand held her shoulder.

Richard Vale's voice came from behind the camera.

“You have something of mine, Daniel.”

My knees nearly gave out.

May you like

Then Richard appeared on screen.

“If you want your daughter back, bring me Claire's evidence.”
