Chapter 7: The Plan Hidden Behind Our Marriage
I read Daniel’s message three times.
Not because I didn't understand the words.
Because I didn't want to believe them.
*It was created to take control of it.*
A person can prepare for betrayal.
They can prepare for anger.
They can prepare for disappointment.
But preparing for someone you love to build a plan against you is different.
It forces you to question every memory.
Every conversation.
Every smile.
Every "I love you.""
I stood outside the restaurant, surrounded by people walking past me, cars moving through traffic, and the ordinary noise of a normal afternoon.
But my world had shifted.
I called Daniel immediately.
He answered after one ring.
"Ms. Taylor.""
"Tell me exactly what you found.""
There was a pause.
"We traced the structure of Bright Horizon Solutions.""
"And?""
"It wasn't created as a separate business.""
"What does that mean?""
"It was created as a holding company.""
I frowned.
"A holding company?""
"Yes. A company designed to control assets, contracts, and ownership rights.""
My grip tightened around my phone.
"Whose assets?""
"Yours.""
The word hit harder than I expected.
Not because I didn't know.
Because hearing it out loud made it real.
"How?""
Daniel continued carefully.
"We found drafts of agreements that would transfer certain business rights to Bright Horizon Solutions.""
"Transfer rights?""
"Your intellectual property. Some client contracts. Future expansion profits.""
I stopped walking.
"Future expansion?""
"Yes.""
My mind went back.
Six months earlier.
The late-night conversations.
Caden sitting beside me on the couch while I reviewed business plans.
"You work too hard," he had said.
"You need someone to help you carry the pressure.""
At the time, I thought he was being supportive.
I thought he understood me.
But maybe he wasn't offering help.
Maybe he was looking for access.
"Who created the documents?""
Daniel hesitated.
"That's where things get more complicated.""
"Tell me.""
"The paperwork was prepared by a law firm.""
"Which one?""
He gave me the name.
I knew it immediately.
Not because I worked with them.
Because Caden had introduced them.
Two years ago, he told me they were "great people.""
"They understand business," he said.
"They can help you protect your future.""
My future.
The irony almost made me laugh.
"Daniel, send me everything.""
"We already prepared a secure file.""
"Good.""
"Ms. Taylor?""
"Yes?""
"There is one more thing.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"We found a document dated three weeks before your last business trip.""
"What's important about that date?""
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"That was the day you told your husband about the new international expansion.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
The same expansion only a few people knew about.
The same expansion that could increase my company's value significantly.
"What does the document say?""
"It lists a planned transition date.""
"Transition of what?""
A pause.
"Ownership.""
I stood there silently.
Then I asked the question I already knew the answer to.
"Who was supposed to take control?""
Daniel answered.
"Bright Horizon Solutions.""
I didn't drive home immediately.
I drove to the office.
Not because I wanted to work.
Because I needed to see it.
The place I had built.
The company that started with one laptop on my kitchen table.
The company everyone told me would fail.
The company Caden now wanted to own.
The building was quiet when I arrived.
Most employees had already left.
I walked through the lobby.
The security guard smiled.
"Late night again, Ms. Taylor?""
I nodded.
"Just checking something.""
The elevator took me to the top floor.
My office.
My name on the door.
I stood there for a moment.
Then unlocked it.
Inside, everything was exactly how I left it.
The framed photos.
The awards.
The first contract I ever signed.
The picture of me and Donovan when he was two years old.
A reminder of why I started.
I sat at my desk and opened the secure file Daniel sent.
The documents appeared one by one.
Contracts.
Emails.
Financial reports.
Then I found it.
A folder titled:
*Project Phoenix.*
My heart stopped.
That was the code name for my expansion plan.
A plan I had never shared publicly.
I opened it.
Inside were copies of my own business documents.
But attached were notes.
Private notes.
Someone had written comments beside my strategies.
Suggestions.
Weaknesses.
Possible entry points.
I scrolled down.
Then I saw the author.
Caden.
I stared at his name.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Because there was something more painful than being betrayed.
Realizing how long the betrayal had been happening.
I remembered the nights he sat beside me.
Asking questions.
"You think this market will grow?""
"How much would the company be worth if it expands internationally?""
"What would happen if someone invested?""
I thought he was interested because he loved me.
Because he wanted to understand my world.
He wasn't learning my world.
He was mapping it.
A knock interrupted me.
I quickly closed the file.
"Come in.""
My assistant, Rachel, stepped inside.
She looked surprised.
"Taylor? I thought you went home.""
"I had something to check.""
She noticed my expression.
"Is everything okay?""
I looked at her.
Rachel had been with me since the beginning.
She was one of the few people who knew how much work I had put into building the company.
"Rachel, did Caden ever ask you about company information?""
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
"Why?""
"Please answer.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
My chest tightened.
"When?""
"A few months ago.""
"What did he ask?""
She hesitated.
"Mostly normal things.""
"Rachel.""
She sighed.
"He asked about your schedule.""
I frowned.
"My schedule?""
"He wanted to know when you had meetings. Who you were meeting with. Which investors were interested.""
I felt cold.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She looked guilty.
"Because he was your husband.""
That sentence hurt.
Because everyone trusted him because I trusted him.
"What else?""
Rachel sat down.
"He asked about your access codes.""
My expression hardened.
"What?""
"He said you were considering making him a business partner and needed information prepared.""
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"He told you that?""
She nodded.
"I thought it was true.""
I looked away.
The worst part was that I couldn't blame her.
I had spent years creating the image of a loving husband.
Everyone believed what I believed.
Rachel looked at me.
"Taylor... what's happening?""
I took a breath.
Then I said the truth.
"Caden has been trying to take control of my company.""
Her face went pale.
"What?""
I nodded.
"I don't know how far he got.""
Rachel was silent.
Then she said something that surprised me.
"Actually... I might know.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
She opened her laptop.
"There was something strange last month.""
"What?""
"A request came through from legal.""
"From which legal team?""
She turned the screen.
I recognized the email address.
The same law firm Caden recommended.
"What did they request?""
Rachel swallowed.
"They wanted copies of your original incorporation documents.""
I felt a wave of anger.
"Did they get them?""
"No.""
"Why?""
She smiled slightly.
"Because I thought it was strange.""
I looked at her.
"Thank you.""
She nodded.
"But Taylor...""
"Yes?""
"There was another request.""
My stomach tightened.
"What request?""
She looked at the screen.
"They asked for your personal trust documents.""
The room went silent.
My personal trust.
The one my mother helped me create after my company became successful.
The one protecting certain assets.
The one almost nobody knew about.
Almost.
I stood slowly.
"Caden knew about it.""
Rachel didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I already knew.
I walked back to my desk.
The betrayal was no longer just about money.
It was about control.
He didn't want my success.
He wanted ownership of it.
He didn't want to stand beside me.
He wanted to replace me.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Caden.
I looked at the screen.
*I hope you're done being dramatic. We need to fix this before you ruin our family.*
I stared at the words.
Then I typed one reply.
*You're right. We do need to fix this.*
I paused.
Then added:
*But not the way you think.*
I sent it.
Seconds later, the message showed as read.
No response.
For the first time, I wondered if Caden was afraid.
Not of losing his marriage.
Not of losing his comfort.
But of losing control.
And if he had been planning this for years...
I needed to know one more thing.
Who else was involved?
Because people like Caden rarely build a plan alone.
And the answer was hidden somewhere in the documents.
May you like
Somewhere inside the company he created.
Somewhere inside the life he thought he had already stolen.
