Chapter 12: The Name Hidden Behind Bright Horizon
I stared at the message until the screen went dark.
Then I unlocked my phone and read it again.
*Ask him who really owns Bright Horizon Solutions.*
A warning.
A threat.
Or a clue.
I couldn't tell.
But one thing was certain.
This wasn't over.
I had spent days believing the story was simple.
Caden was the villain.
I was the person betrayed.
The evidence had proven he lied.
But now there was another question.
Who was he working for?
And why?
I walked into the kitchen where my mother was making tea.
She looked up immediately.
"Something happened.""
I smiled faintly.
"How do you always know?""
She poured another cup.
"Because you have the same expression you had when you were twelve and broke the neighbor's window.""
I laughed.
"I did not break it.""
She raised an eyebrow.
"You kicked the ball.""
"The ball broke it.""
She smiled.
"And who kicked the ball?""
I sat down.
Even after everything, she could still make me feel like a child.
Maybe that was what I needed.
Someone who remembered me before the money.
Before the company.
Before the expectations.
"I received a strange message.""
Her expression changed.
"What kind of message?""
I showed her.
She read it quietly.
Then looked at me.
"Do you think it's true?""
"I don't know.""
She nodded.
"Then find out.""
I looked at her.
"That's it?""
"What else?""
"I don't know. Most people would tell me to ignore it.""
She shook her head.
"Your problem has never been that you investigate too much.""
She touched the phone.
"Your problem has been believing people without investigating enough.""
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
I trusted Caden because I wanted him to be trustworthy.
But wanting something to be true doesn't make it true.
The next morning, I called Daniel.
"I need another investigation.""
He didn't hesitate.
"About Bright Horizon?""
"Yes.""
"What changed?""
"Someone contacted me.""
I forwarded the message.
After a few minutes, he called back.
"Ms. Taylor.""
"What did you find?""
"Something unusual.""
My heart tightened.
"Tell me.""
"The ownership structure is layered.""
"Meaning?""
"Bright Horizon was created with multiple shell entities.""
"Can you trace the original owner?""
"We're trying.""
"Try harder.""
I heard silence.
Not because he was offended.
Because he understood.
"I'll need time.""
"How much?""
"A few hours.""
"Take two.""
He laughed softly.
"You haven't changed.""
"Actually, I have.""
A pause.
"You're right.""
While Daniel worked, I went to the office.
The atmosphere had changed.
People were quieter.
Not because they feared me.
Because they were processing what happened.
For years, everyone had seen Caden as the supportive husband.
The man behind the successful woman.
Now they were seeing the truth.
Rachel met me near the elevator.
"Are you okay?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She studied me.
"Really?""
I smiled slightly.
"No.""
That surprised her.
"I think that's the first honest answer you've given me.""
I laughed.
"I guess I'm learning.""
We walked toward my office.
"How are people reacting?""
Rachel shrugged.
"Some are shocked.""
"Some?""
"Some aren't.""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"Not everyone trusted him.""
"Who?""
She hesitated.
"Some employees noticed things.""
"Like what?""
"Like how he talked about your company.""
I frowned.
"What did he say?""
Rachel lowered her voice.
"He used to say it was only a matter of time before he became the face of the business.""
I felt cold.
"The face?""
She nodded.
"He said investors wanted someone they could relate to.""
I looked away.
Because now I remembered.
The events.
The dinners.
The meetings.
Caden always standing slightly in front of me.
Always introducing himself first.
Always saying:
"My wife built the company, but I helped shape the vision.""
At the time, I thought he was proud.
Now I realized he was rehearsing.
Around noon, Daniel called.
His voice sounded different.
Serious.
"Ms. Taylor.""
"What did you find?""
"We traced the original funding.""
"And?""
"Bright Horizon was not funded by Caden.""
I sat down.
"Who funded it?""
A pause.
"Bonnie.""
I froze.
"My mother-in-law?""
"Yes.""
That was impossible.
Bonnie had always acted like she barely understood business.
She complained about technology.
She said financial discussions were boring.
She couldn't even remember my company's name correctly.
But she funded a company designed to take it?
"How much?""
"Initial investment was two hundred thousand dollars.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where did she get that money?""
"That's what we're investigating.""
I stood.
"No.""
"What?""
"Find out.""
"Ms. Taylor—"
"Daniel.""
I lowered my voice.
"I need to know everything.""
He was quiet.
Then:
"There's something else.""
I waited.
"The company was created five years ago.""
I frowned.
"Five years?""
"Yes.""
My mind went back.
Five years ago.
That was before Caden had even started talking about business.
Before he began asking questions.
Before I suspected anything.
"Why wait so long?""
"I don't know.""
Then another thought hit me.
"Daniel.""
"Yes?""
"Who was the registered director?""
He hesitated.
"You're not going to like this.""
"Tell me.""
A pause.
Then:
"Your father.""
I stopped breathing.
My father.
The man who left when I was nine.
The man my mother never spoke about.
The man who disappeared.
"That's impossible.""
"I verified it.""
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"My father has been gone for decades.""
"I understand.""
"Then how?""
"I don't know.""
I sat down slowly.
The world suddenly felt larger.
More complicated.
Because Caden was no longer the beginning of the story.
He was a chapter.
Maybe not even the first.
That evening, I found my mother in the garden.
She was watering flowers.
I watched her for a moment.
The woman who had carried me through every difficult moment.
The woman who had never lied to me.
Except now, I wondered.
"Mom.""
She looked up.
"Yes?""
I walked closer.
"I need to ask you something.""
Her expression changed.
She knew.
"About what?""
I sat beside her.
"About Dad.""
The watering can stopped.
A long silence followed.
"Why now?""
I swallowed.
"Because his name appeared in something.""
Her face became pale.
"What something?""
I looked at her.
"Bright Horizon Solutions.""
The color disappeared from her face.
That reaction told me everything.
Not the answer.
But the fear.
"Mom?""
She sat down slowly.
"I hoped you would never find out.""
My heart sank.
"Find out what?""
She looked at the ground.
"Your father wasn't just someone who left.""
I waited.
"He was someone who made enemies.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"He was involved in business.""
"Business?""
She nodded.
"But not like you.""
Her voice became quieter.
"He wanted shortcuts.""
I stared.
"Mom, why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you were a child.""
"That was twenty years ago.""
"I know.""
She looked at me.
"But some secrets don't become lighter with time.""
I felt a chill.
"How did he connect to Caden?""
She looked away.
"I don't know.""
"Mom.""
She closed her eyes.
"I said I don't know.""
I believed she was hiding something.
But I also believed she was afraid.
And fear was different from guilt.
"Did Dad know about Bright Horizon?""
She didn't answer.
That was the answer.
I stood.
"Mom.""
She grabbed my hand.
"Taylor.""
I looked at her.
"Please.""
The word surprised me.
My mother rarely begged.
"Please be careful.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with worry.
"Because your father was not the only person who wanted what you built.""
I felt my heart race.
"What does that mean?""
She looked toward the street.
Toward the old house.
Toward the life I thought I understood.
"It means Caden may not have chosen this path by himself.""
The evening air suddenly felt heavy.
I returned to the mansion that night with more questions than answers.
My husband had betrayed me.
My mother-in-law had financed the plan.
My missing father was connected to the company.
And my mother knew more than she had told me.
At midnight, another message arrived.
This time, not from an unknown number.
From Caden.
*We need to talk.*
I stared.
Then another message appeared.
*There is something about your father that you don't know.*
I felt a cold wave move through me.
May you like
Because for the first time, I wasn't afraid of what Caden had done.
I was afraid of what he was about to reveal.
