Chapter 6: The Enemy At The Gate

The document shook slightly in my hands.

Not because I was afraid.

Because everything I believed about my family had changed in a matter of minutes.

My father had spent his entire life telling me that our ranch came from hard work.

That our land was earned.

That my grandfather had built everything with his own hands.

But now I was holding proof that there was a much older story buried beneath the soil.

A story nobody wanted uncovered.

Chief Talon looked at the papers.

“Read the letter.””

I unfolded the oldest piece.

The handwriting was faded.

The ink had almost disappeared.

But the words were still clear.

I began reading aloud.

“To the next person who finds this…”

I stopped.

Everyone waited.

I continued.

“This land was never meant to belong to one person. It was meant to protect the families who depend on it.””

Naya closed her eyes.

Her reaction told me the words mattered.

I kept reading.

“Greed will always arrive wearing the face of opportunity. Those who seek control will claim they are bringing progress, but they are only taking what they did not build.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

That sounded exactly like Silas.

I looked at Chief Talon.

“This was written how long ago?””

“Almost fifty years.””

I looked back down.

“And Silas knows?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Naya answered.

“Because his family has searched for it for decades.””

I looked at her.

“His family?””

She nodded.

“Silas’s father spent years trying to find these documents.””

“Why?””

“Because they prove his family had no legal claim to this valley.””

The pieces started connecting.

The land.

The necklace.

The records.

The army outside my ranch.

Silas was not coming for me.

He was coming for the truth.

A sudden pounding sound came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A voice echoed from the gate.

“Corvin Torne!””

Silas.

I walked toward the door.

Chief Talon stopped me.

“Do not.””

I looked at him.

“He came here for me.””

“He came here for what you have.””

I held up the documents.

“Then he already knows.””

Naya stepped beside me.

“Let me speak.””

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“This started because of you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked outside.

“It started because men like him believe they can take whatever they want.””

I opened the door.

The entire yard went silent.

Silas sat on his horse just beyond the gate.

His men stood behind him.

He smiled when he saw me.

“I knew you would find it.””

I held the documents up.

“You knew my family had this?””

His smile faded slightly.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come sooner?””

His eyes moved across my ranch.

“Because I needed to know where it was.””

“You used me.””

“No.””

He laughed softly.

“I underestimated you.””

That answer bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

Silas leaned forward.

“It means I thought you were just another poor farmer protecting his little piece of dirt.””

I felt anger rise.

“But you were wrong.””

“Yes.””

His expression became colder.

“You are something much more dangerous.””

“What?””

“A man who believes doing the right thing matters.””

The words sounded almost like an insult.

I looked at the men behind him.

“How many people have you hurt looking for this?””

Silas shrugged.

“Enough.””

Naya stepped forward.

“You will never own this valley.””

Silas looked at her.

“There she is.””

His voice changed.

Less confident.

More cruel.

“You always were your father’s weakness.””

Chief Talon moved forward.

But Naya stopped him.

Silas smiled.

“You think this ends with a document?””

He pointed toward the papers.

“Paper burns.””

The yard became silent.

Then he reached into his coat.

And pulled out something.

A small envelope.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

Silas smiled.

“Something your father never told you.””

My heart stopped.

“My father?””

He nodded.

“Your family did not protect those documents because they were heroes.””

I stared at him.

“Then why?””

Silas lifted the envelope.

“Because they were guilty.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Naya looked at me.

Chief Talon looked at me.

And suddenly, I was no longer worried about Silas taking my land.

I was worried about what my own family had hidden from me.

Silas held the envelope higher.

“Ask yourself, Corvin…”

His voice carried across the ranch.

“Why would your grandfather hide the truth if there was nothing to hide?””

May you like

Then he smiled.

“And why did your father spend his whole life making sure you never found out?””
