Chapter 4: The Daughter Of The Chief

Naya stood on the ridge above us, looking exactly as she had the day before.

Dust covered her clothes.

Her hair moved in the morning wind.

But she was no longer the exhausted stranger leaning against my fence.

She stood tall.

Strong.

Like someone who had spent her entire life carrying responsibility.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Chief Talon walked forward.

“Naya.””

Her eyes stayed on me.

Not him.

Me.

I did not understand why.

I had only given her water.

A few minutes of kindness.

Nothing more.

But she looked at me like that moment had changed something.

She finally walked down the hill.

Every warrior watched her pass.

When she reached us, Chief Talon immediately embraced her.

The strong, silent leader who had faced hundreds of enemies without fear suddenly looked like a father who had almost lost his child.

“You should not have come alone,” he said.

Naya stepped back.

“I had to.””

“You were injured.””

“I survived.””

His expression softened.

“But you almost did not.””

She looked away.

“I know.””

I watched the exchange quietly.

Then Naya turned toward me.

“You kept it.””

She looked at the necklace.

I held it out.

“I thought it was yours.””

She did not take it immediately.

Instead, she asked, “Why?””

The question caught me off guard.

“Because it was yours.””

She studied me.

“Most people would have sold it.””

“I am not most people.””

A faint smile appeared.

“No.””

She looked toward the necklace.

“You are not.””

Chief Talon cleared his throat.

“Naya needs to tell you everything.””

She nodded.

Then she looked toward the house.

“Inside.””

I hesitated.

“Inside my house?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression became serious.

“Because what happens next concerns you.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

I led them inside.

My small ranch house suddenly felt much smaller with so many important people standing inside it.

Naya placed the necklace on my table.

Then she touched the carved symbol.

“This belonged to my grandmother.””

I listened carefully.

“She was the last person who carried the agreement between our people and the settlers in this valley.””

I frowned.

“Agreement?””

Naya nodded.

“For years, there has been peace here because both sides respected the land.””

“Then what changed?””

Her eyes hardened.

“Silas Vane.””

She explained that Silas had spent years trying to take control of the valley.

He wanted the land.

The water.

The trade routes.

And anyone who stood in his way became a problem.

“He cannot take the land legally,” Naya said.

“So he creates fear.””

I nodded slowly.

“And yesterday?””

Her face changed.

“Yesterday, I was trying to reach my father.””

“What happened?””

She looked down.

“Silas’s men found me first.””

The room became silent.

“They chased you?””

“Yes.””

“And you came here?””

“I did not know where else to go.””

I looked at her.

“You could have told me.””

She gave a small, sad smile.

“You would have helped.””

I did not answer.

Because she was right.

Naya looked toward the window.

“That is why I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That kindness would put you in danger.””

A strange feeling settled over me.

The entire army outside.

The enemy riders.

The secret behind the necklace.

And somehow, it all connected to a simple decision I made beside a well.

I gave water to someone who needed it.

Now powerful men were willing to fight over what that act represented.

Chief Talon walked toward the window.

“They will return.””

I looked outside.

“Silas?””

He nodded.

“Not just Silas.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who else?””

Before he could answer, a sound came from outside.

A horse.

Racing.

Everyone reached for their weapons.

A young warrior burst through the door.

His face was pale.

“Chief.””

Talon turned.

“What happened?””

The warrior looked at Naya.

Then at me.

“He found the records.””

Chief Talon froze.

“What records?””

The warrior swallowed.

“The ones proving who truly owns the valley.””

Naya’s face changed.

“Impossible.””

The warrior shook his head.

“He has them.””

I looked between them.

“What records?””

Nobody answered.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because whatever Silas had found…

Whatever secret had been buried for years…

It was important enough to bring hundreds of warriors to my doorstep.

Naya slowly turned toward me.

“Corvin.””

Her voice was quiet.

“The reason Silas came here…”

May you like

She paused.

“…is because those records were hidden on this ranch.””
