Chapter 8: The Last Promise

The woman standing in the doorway looked nothing like the villain I expected.

That was what made her frightening.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t shouting.

She wasn’t trying to intimidate anyone.

She looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

Like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

Henry stood slowly.

“Who are you?””

The woman removed her gloves.

“My name is Claire Whitmore.””

Michael’s face changed.

“Whitmore?””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Another family member?””

Emily answered quietly.

“Henry’s younger sister.””

Nobody moved.

Henry stared.

“I thought you left Ohio.””

“I did.””

“Twenty years ago.””

Claire nodded.

“And I came back because the truth finally matters more than pride.””

I looked at the others.

Everyone seemed shocked.

Everyone except Emily.

“You knew she was coming.””

Emily nodded.

“I suspected.””

Henry looked hurt.

“You knew and said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect Daniel.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying they were protecting me.

Nobody realized secrets were becoming another kind of danger.

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Claire.

“If you know something, tell me.””

She studied me.

“You look like your mother.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What do you know about her?””

Claire walked toward the table.

“More than Henry.””

Henry’s jaw tightened.

“Careful.””

Claire ignored him.

“Your mother was not just Margaret’s daughter.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She was the person who discovered what Thomas was doing.””

The room froze.

Michael whispered:

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“Your mother found evidence that Thomas had been moving money through fake companies.””

Henry looked stunned.

“But the investigation…”

“Was incomplete.””

Emily opened her folder.

“She was about to expose him.””

I looked at Claire.

“Then why didn’t she?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Because someone threatened her.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Henry.

Then at me.

“Someone close to your family.””

Nobody spoke.

The answer was obvious.

But nobody wanted to say it.

“Who?”” I asked again.

Claire sighed.

“Your mother believed it was Thomas.””

Henry looked relieved.

“But?””

Claire looked down.

“But she was wrong.””

The words hit the room like a stone.

Michael stepped forward.

“Then who was it?””

Claire looked at him.

“You.””

Everyone froze.

Michael’s face went white.

“What?””

Claire shook her head.

“Not you personally.””

She looked at Henry.

“Your son was being used.””

Michael looked confused.

“I don’t understand.””

“Thomas knew you wanted your father’s approval.””

The words hurt him.

“He used that.””

Henry looked at his son.

Michael looked away.

Claire continued.

“He convinced you that your father was hiding things from you.””

Michael whispered:

“I thought I was helping.””

“And while you searched for answers,” Claire said, “someone else destroyed evidence.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked broken.

Not guilty.

Broken.

That difference mattered.

Then Claire placed another document on the table.

“The person who has been sending threats isn’t trying to take Henry’s money.””

She looked at me.

“They’re trying to stop Daniel from discovering the truth.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Claire looked at the envelope in my hand.

“Because Margaret left something for you.””

Henry frowned.

“Something?””

Claire nodded.

“A final promise.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out an old key.

My eyes widened.

I recognized it.

I had seen it before.

In my mother’s belongings after she died.

I thought it was meaningless.

Claire placed it beside the envelope.

“She told me that one day, her grandson would find this.””

I looked at Henry.

“Where does it open?””

Nobody answered.

Then the lights in Rosie’s Diner suddenly went out.

The entire building fell dark.

A second later, every phone in the room received the same message.

Mine.

Henry’s.

Michael’s.

Rebecca’s.

Emily’s.

One sentence appeared on every screen.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.*

May you like

Then another message appeared underneath.

*THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS THE ONE WHO LIED.*
