Chapter 5: The Son’s Secret

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Three words.

Three simple words.

*STOP TRUSTING HIM.*

But I couldn’t stop staring at them.

The message was meant to create fear.

And it worked.

The broken diner window let cold rain blow across the floor. Customers who had just arrived stood frozen near the entrance, whispering and looking around for whoever had thrown the note.

Henry didn’t move.

He just stared at Michael.

His own son.

The man he had spent years trying to reconnect with.

“Michael,” Henry said quietly.

His voice wasn’t angry.

That made it worse.

“Tell me this isn’t true.””

Michael looked at the paper.

Then at the shattered window.

Then down at the floor.

“I didn’t send that.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew whether to believe him.

I had spent months seeing Henry as the lonely old man at Table Seven.

Then one day, everything changed.

His money.

His company.

His family.

And now I was standing in the middle of a mystery where everyone had a reason to lie.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“We need to leave.””

Henry looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because whoever did this knows Daniel is important to the estate.””

She lowered her voice.

“And they’re becoming more aggressive.””

I looked at Henry.

“Is that what this is?””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Someone trying to scare me away?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“I thought you said I wasn’t part of this.””

“You weren’t.””

“Then why am I being followed?””

Henry looked down.

“Because I brought you into my world.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame him.

But when I saw the regret on his face, I couldn’t.

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“I know how this looks.””

“Do you?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Because right now, it looks like someone connected to you is watching me.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t get angry.

He just accepted it.

“My father and I have had problems for years.””

Henry looked away.

Michael continued.

“When my mother died, everything changed.””

The diner became quiet.

“She was the only person who could make him slow down. After she was gone, he buried himself in work.””

Henry whispered.

“That’s not fair.””

Michael looked at him.

“Isn’t it?””

The pain between them was obvious.

Not the kind created by one argument.

The kind built over years.

“I needed my father,” Michael said.

“And you needed me to understand business.””

Henry’s eyes dropped.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You were controlling me.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt like I was watching a conversation that had been waiting twelve years to happen.

Finally, Michael looked at me.

“But I swear to you, Daniel, I didn’t send anyone.””

“Then who did?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“You know something.””

Michael looked away.

Henry noticed.

“Michael.””

His son closed his eyes.

“There was someone else.””

The words changed the entire room.

“Someone else?”” I repeated.

Michael nodded.

“A few months ago, I found out Thomas wasn’t working alone.””

Rebecca immediately opened her folder.

“Who?””

Michael looked at Henry.

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know if you would believe me.””

“Who?”” Henry asked again.

Michael swallowed.

“Your former assistant.””

Henry froze.

“Emily?””

I watched his reaction.

He knew the name.

And he hated what it meant.

“Emily Lawson worked for my father for fifteen years,” Michael said.

Rebecca looked through her notes.

“She disappeared after the company investigation.””

Michael nodded.

“She believed my father destroyed her career.””

Henry stood slowly.

“That’s impossible.””

“Dad, you fired her.””

“Because she stole confidential files.””

Michael looked at him.

“And she said you blamed her to protect someone else.””

The room went silent.

Too many secrets.

Too many stories.

I looked at Henry.

“Did she steal them?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“I thought she did.””

“You thought?””

Henry sat down.

“She was like family.””

His voice became softer.

“When Margaret was sick, Emily helped us.””

I frowned.

“Then why would she betray you?””

Henry looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time, I realized something.

Henry Whitmore wasn’t a man who knew everything.

He was a man who had spent years believing he understood people.

Maybe that was why he trusted me.

Because I was the one person who had nothing to hide.

Rebecca checked her phone.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She turned the screen toward Henry.

“It’s worse.””

I watched his face.

“What now?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“The person who leaked the estate documents wasn’t trying to damage Henry.””

“Then what were they trying to do?””

She looked at the paper on the table.

“They wanted to make sure Daniel saw them.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael spoke.

“Because someone wants him involved.””

I stared at him.

“Involved in what?””

Michael looked toward the diner entrance.

And whispered:

“Finding the truth about what happened to Margaret.””

My chest tightened.

“What does Henry’s wife have to do with this?””

Henry slowly looked at his son.

Michael’s expression changed.

Like he had finally said something he had promised himself he would never reveal.

“There’s something Dad never told you.””

Henry stood.

“Michael.””

But it was too late.

His son looked at me.

“Your friendship with my father started because of this diner.””

He paused.

“But the reason someone chose you…”

May you like

His voice lowered.

“Is because you were already connected to my mother.””
