Chapter 8: The Person In The Photograph
I didn’t sleep.
Not that night.
Not the next.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sophie standing at the top of the stairs.
Her tiny hand holding mine.
Her whisper.
Daddy… she hurts me every day.
I sat in the kitchen at 5:12 the next morning, staring at the evidence photographs spread across the table.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
The police had removed the locks.
The photographs.
The devices.
Everything Vanessa had hidden.
But they couldn’t remove the feeling that the walls had been watching us.
Detective Ruiz walked in carrying two coffees.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
“I haven’t.””
He placed one cup down.
“Neither have I.””
I looked at him.
“What did Aaron mean?””
Ruiz sat.
“He spoke to investigators after his call with you.””
“And?””
“He confirmed his statement.””
“That Vanessa had help?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Ruiz opened a folder.
“We’re still verifying.””
I hated that answer.
“Detective.””
He looked at me.
“My daughter is in that house for months, and someone was helping Vanessa.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
He slid a photograph across the table.
My heart stopped.
It was old.
Faded.
A family photo.
Vanessa.
Aaron.
A young Caleb.
And another person standing behind them.
A man.
I knew him.
I had seen him at school events.
At neighborhood gatherings.
At Sophie’s birthday party.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Ruiz watched me.
“You recognize him.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Mark.””
“Mark who?””
“Mark Ellison.””
My voice barely worked.
“Sophie’s school counselor.””
Ruiz nodded.
“Your daughter’s school counselor.””
The room spun.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because he helped us.””
“With what?””
“When Emily died.””
I looked down.
Mark had been the person who helped Sophie process losing her mother.
He had sat with her.
Talked to her.
Gained her trust.
Ruiz said nothing.
And that silence told me everything.
“What?””
“We found messages.””
“Between Vanessa and Mark?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Recently.””
My stomach twisted.
“How recently?””
“The first message was eight months ago.””
Eight months.
The same month I married Vanessa.
“What did they talk about?””
Ruiz looked at the folder.
“Mostly Sophie.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
“We’re analyzing the messages.””
“Show me.””
He hesitated.
Then turned the folder.
One printed message sat on top.
Vanessa:
She is starting to notice things.
Mark:
Then you need to control the situation before Daniel does.
I stared.
My hands shook.
Another message.
Vanessa:
She asks about Lily.
Mark:
Children remember more than people think.
I pushed the paper away.
“How?””
Ruiz looked at me.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
I stood.
“I need to see Sophie.””
“She’s with a child specialist.””
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she disclosed something during the preliminary interview.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ruiz looked down.
“She said Vanessa showed her pictures.””
“Of what?””
He paused.
“Of Lily.””
I couldn’t move.
“She showed my daughter pictures of a dead child?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ruiz’s answer was quiet.
“To scare her.””
I closed my eyes.
Sophie had been carrying this alone.
Every day.
Every night.
And I had been thanking Vanessa for helping.
A car door slammed outside.
Both of us turned.
A police officer entered.
“Detective.””
Ruiz stood.
“What happened?””
“We found Mark Ellison.””
“Where?””
“He’s gone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean gone?””
“His house is empty.””
Ruiz grabbed the folder.
“Any sign of him?””
The officer nodded.
“One thing.””
“What?””
The officer looked at me.
“We found a photo.””
“What photo?””
The officer swallowed.
“Of Sophie.””
My blood turned cold.
“Where?””
“In Mark’s home.””
Ruiz looked at me.
“When was it taken?””
The officer answered.
“Yesterday.””
I couldn’t speak.
Yesterday.
Sophie had been at school yesterday.
The officer continued.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
“What is?””
He handed Ruiz an evidence bag.
Inside was a small notebook.
Ruiz opened it.
Read one page.
Then another.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The notebook contains dates.””
“What dates?””
“The days Vanessa punished Sophie.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Why would Mark record that?””
Ruiz turned the page.
At the bottom was a sentence written in black ink.
I looked up.
“What does it say?””
Ruiz’s voice was barely audible.
“It says: ‘Subject is almost ready.’”
My stomach dropped.
“Subject?””
Ruiz looked toward the hallway where Sophie was waiting.
Then back at me.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
My phone rang.
This time, I recognized the number.
Vanessa.
I answered.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel.””
Her voice was different.
Broken.
“Please listen to me.””
I said nothing.
“I know what you found.””
“You’re calling from jail?””
“No.””
My blood went cold.
“Then where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I escaped.””
I stood immediately.
Ruiz reached for the phone.
But Vanessa continued.
“Daniel, you have to believe me.””
“Believe what?””
“That Mark was never helping me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was controlling me.””
Ruiz motioned for me to keep her talking.
I swallowed.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because the person who has Sophie right now…”
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Daniel.””
I heard her crying.
“The person you trusted most…”
A pause.
“Is the person who planned everything.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Where Sophie had been moments earlier.
The door was open.
Empty.
And then Vanessa whispered:
“Your daughter is not with the police.””
May you like
I dropped the phone.
