[CHAPTER 10] - Breadcrumbs

Dad told me later that the moment he learned I was gone, he stopped feeling fear.
Fear became purpose.
Police locked down roads around the hotel.
Security footage showed Vivian and Mason taking me through the emergency exit.
Their truck appeared on a traffic camera heading west.
Toward Millstone.
Dad knew immediately.
"She's going to the reservoir."
Detective Reed wasn't convinced.
"It could be misdirection."
"Ellie was taken hours after Nora left a drawing of water."
Hannah agreed.
"It's Millstone."
They drove there with officers from three departments.
The campground covered hundreds of acres.
Most buildings had been abandoned for years.
Police split into teams.
Dad refused to stay behind.
He searched cabin after cabin.
Nothing.
Then an officer called out.
"Got something."
A yellow hair tie lay beside an old service road.
Dad recognized it.
Ellie wears those every day.
That was what he told Reed.
They kept moving.
Fifty yards later, they found my sock.
Then another.
Then the button from my dress.
Dad started running.
Detective Reed caught his arm.
"Slow down."
"She's leaving a trail."
"Which means she expects us to follow."
Dad stopped.
It could be a trap.
But it was also me.
The trail ended near tire tracks.
A child's shoe lay in the mud.
Hannah picked it up.
"Nora."
Now they knew.
Both of us had been there.
Police followed the tire marks toward a cluster of old staff cabins beside the reservoir.
One building showed signs of recent use.
Fresh footprints.
Generator noise.
A padlock that wasn't rusted.
Dad wanted to rush inside.
Reed stopped him.
"We don't know who's there."
"My daughter is there."
"And if you run in and Mason has a weapon?"
Dad stared at the door.
He forced himself to wait.
Officers surrounded the cabin.
Inside, Nora and I were awake.
We heard engines.
Mason heard them too.
He burst through the door.
"Get up!"
Nora grabbed me.
Vivian came behind him.
"How?"
Mason looked out the window.
"Cops."
Vivian stared at us.
Her eyes dropped to Nora's bare foot.
Then me.
She understood.
"You left a trail."
I didn't answer.
She grabbed me.
"Little brat."
Nora jumped on her arm.
"Leave her alone!"
Vivian shoved Nora aside.
I screamed.
Outside, somebody shouted.
"POLICE! COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS VISIBLE!"
Mason swore.
He grabbed a handgun from his waistband.
Vivian's face changed.
"Put that away."
"They're not taking me."
"We can use the girls."
"No."
"We walk out with them."
"That's kidnapping with witnesses!"
Vivian stared at him.
Mason laughed bitterly.
"We're past that."
He pulled me toward him.
I screamed.
Nora bit his hand.
Mason yelled.
The gun fell.
Vivian lunged for it.
Everything happened at once.
Nora pulled me toward the bathroom.
We slammed the door.
Vivian shouted.
Mason cursed.
Police yelled from outside.
Then a gunshot cracked through the cabin.
Nora and I screamed.
I crawled into the bathtub.
Nora climbed beside me.
We held each other.
Another shout.
A crash.
Then silence.
I thought Dad was dead.
I don't know why.
I just started screaming his name.
"DADDY!"
A voice answered from outside.
"ELLIE!"
Dad.
I jumped from the tub.
Nora tried to stop me.
I opened the bathroom door.
Smoke hung in the room.
Mason was on the floor.
An officer held him down.
Blood covered Mason's shoulder.
Vivian stood against the wall with her hands raised.
The gun lay several feet away.
Then Dad ran through the doorway.
I don't remember crossing the room.
I remember being in his arms.
I remember his heart.
I remember screaming into his neck.
"You found me!"
He was crying.
"I found you."
"You promised."
"I know."
"You promised!"
"I know."
He kissed my hair over and over.
Hannah entered behind him.
"Nora!"
Nora froze.
For a moment she didn't move.
Then she ran.
"AUNT HANNAH!"
Hannah dropped to her knees.
Nora collided with her.
They both cried so loudly everyone stopped watching Vivian.
Almost everyone.
Vivian saw the distraction.
She moved toward the back door.
Detective Reed blocked her.
"Don't."
Vivian stared at him.
"You have no idea what happened."
Reed handcuffed her.
"Oh, I think we're getting a pretty clear picture."
Vivian looked at Dad.
"Daniel."
He didn't respond.
"Daniel, please."
Dad turned.
I was still in his arms.
Vivian's eyes moved to me.
"Ellie misunderstood everything."
I stopped crying.
"No."
Vivian blinked.
I had never challenged her in front of Dad.
I pointed toward Nora.
"You locked her in the wall."
"Ellie—"
"You said Daddy would send me away."
"That's not—"
"You took me."
Vivian's face changed.
Dad tightened his arms around me.
Vivian realized something.
I wasn't afraid of her anymore.
At least not while Dad held me.
Police led her outside.
She kept looking back.
Nobody followed.
An ambulance checked Nora and me.
Nora was dehydrated and underweight.
I had bruises on my arm.
Mason survived the gunshot.
A police officer had fired when Mason reached for the weapon after losing control of it.
He was taken to the hospital under guard.
Vivian was taken to jail.
Everyone told us it was over.
They were wrong.
Finding us ended the kidnapping.
It didn't explain Maya's death.
It didn't explain the stolen money.
And it didn't explain the message hidden inside Vivian's phone.
One police technician recovered it that night.
It had been sent to Mason eight months earlier.
Three hours before Maya collapsed.
MAKE SURE SHE DRINKS ALL OF IT.
Hannah read the message.
Her face went completely still.
Nora looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
May you like
But the investigation was no longer only about what Vivian had done to us.
It was about what she might have done to Nora's mother.
