Chapter 5 - The Choice Andre Should Have Made Sooner

By Saturday morning, two overnight bags stood beside the front door.
One belonged to Andre.
The other belonged to Ben.
Andre had spent the previous evening talking with Lena, who had offered them both a place to stay while he worked through the next steps.
He had explained the plan to Ben before packing anything.
"We don't have to go to Grandma's if you don't want to," he'd said. "We can stay somewhere else. But I don't think things can continue the way they have."
Ben had thought about it for a long moment.
Then he asked, "Will you come too?"
Andre's heart tightened.
"Of course I will."
"You're not just sending me away?"
"No, son. We're going together."
Now Ben stood beside the bags, holding the white birthday card.
Tanya came down the staircase.
She stopped when she saw the luggage.
"What is this?"
Andre straightened.
"Ben and I are staying with Lena for a while."
Tanya stared at him.
"You're moving out?"
"For now."
"Over this?"
Andre looked at her.
"This isn't just about shoes, Tanya."
"You keep saying that!"
"Because you keep pretending it is."
Tanya looked toward Ben.
He lowered his eyes.
She sighed.
"Benjamin, I hope you understand how much trouble this has caused."
Andre moved between them.
"Don't put that on him."
"I'm talking to him."
"Then talk to him about what you did. Not about the consequences of him finally speaking up."
Tanya looked furious.
Maya and Caleb emerged from the kitchen.
Maya noticed the overnight bags immediately.
"You're really going?"
Ben nodded.
Caleb rushed toward him.
"But we were supposed to finish my science project today."
Ben gave a small, sad smile.
"I know."
"You promised you'd help me build the bridge."
"I can still help."
"How?"
Ben looked helplessly toward Andre.
Andre crouched beside Caleb.
"We'll figure that out. I don't want you or Maya thinking this means Ben stopped being part of your lives."
Caleb wiped his nose.
"Mom said everything was better before people started arguing."
Andre looked up.
Tanya was standing by the staircase.
"That isn't true," he said gently. "Sometimes things look peaceful because somebody is afraid to say they're hurting."
Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
She showed Ben the swimming-pool photograph again.
"I sent this to the family group chat," she said.
On the screen, all three children were laughing.
"I want this picture in the hallway when you come back."
Tanya looked at her daughter.
"Maya—"
"No, Mom."
Maya's voice shook, but she continued.
"I know you love Caleb and me. But Ben has been our brother since you married Andre. You don't get to make us stop loving him."
Caleb stepped beside her.
"He's my brother too."
Ben stared at them.
For the first time since the argument began, he started crying without trying to hide it.
Maya hugged him.
Then Caleb wrapped his arms around both of them.
Andre watched the three children holding each other.
There was no expensive gift in the world that could have made that moment more meaningful.
Tanya looked away.
After the children separated, Andre approached her.
"We need to discuss what happens next," he said quietly. "I'm willing to do that with help. But I won't bring Ben back into this situation and pretend nothing happened."
Tanya stared at the bags.
"And what about our marriage?"
"I don't know what happens to it yet."
She inhaled sharply.
Andre continued.
"I know I failed Ben by not paying attention. I'm going to spend a long time making that right. But I can't rebuild his trust while you keep minimizing what happened."
Tanya pressed a hand against the staircase railing.
"You think you're so much better than me."
"No," Andre said. "I think we both failed him in different ways. But I won't let that become an excuse for what you deliberately did."
He went to the door and picked up his bag.
Ben followed.
Then Tanya spoke.
"Andre, wait."
He turned.
She looked at the white envelope in Ben's hand.
Her expression was different now.
No longer defiant.
No longer angry.
Just frightened.
"There's something I need to tell you about that email."
Andre put down the bag.
Tanya swallowed.
"I didn't just keep Lena's card."
Ben stopped beside the front door.
Tanya looked at him, then back at Andre.
May you like
"I knew exactly what I was doing when I answered her."
And for the first time, everyone in the hallway stood still to hear the truth.
