Chapter 8: The Recording Before the Accusation

Marcus stared at the restricted file.

"Why would Vanessa be the original owner of a recording stored on my security system?""

Daniel examined the file properties.

"She created a separate archive folder using her administrator account.""

"Can you access it?""

"Not without the original account authorization.""

Marcus picked up his phone.

"Then we'll have the company authorize access.""

Daniel nodded.

"That would be the safest way.""

Marcus called the security company again.

This time, he requested a senior technician and explained that an administrator account had created a separate archive that contained relevant footage from an incident involving a child.

The representative took down the details.

"Mr. Reed, we'll need to verify the original account permissions before releasing restricted material.""

"How long?""

"I can escalate the request. Please allow us some time.""

Marcus ended the call.

Daniel looked at him.

"Sir, I should tell you something.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"Vanessa didn't just ask me to adjust the foyer camera yesterday. She also asked whether the system could create a recording that only she could access.""

Marcus's expression tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

"Because I didn't think it was connected to anything serious. She said she wanted privacy when contractors came into the house.""

"And you helped her?""

"I explained how private storage worked. I didn't create anything for her.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Was that when she received your credentials?""

"Yes. She said she needed temporary access to test the settings.""

Marcus looked at the laptop.

"Did she ever tell you why she wanted the separate folder?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No, sir.""

The room became quiet.

Upstairs, a door closed.

Marcus glanced toward the staircase.

He wanted to speak to his son again, but first he needed to understand what was happening.

The security company's email arrived twelve minutes later.

The restricted archive could be accessed through an independent recovery process, provided the original files remained intact.

Daniel began the recovery.

A progress bar appeared.

Marcus stood behind him, watching.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

*We need to talk. Don't let Daniel show you anything.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

*There are things I haven't told you. Please give me until tomorrow.*

He typed a response.

*Tell me now.*

The message showed as delivered.

No reply came.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

"Is everything okay, sir?""

Marcus placed the phone on the table.

"Just continue.""

The recovery reached completion.

A new folder appeared.

Daniel opened it.

Several files were listed.

The earliest recording began at 4:12 p.m.

The latest was timestamped 4:39 p.m.

Marcus pointed to the first file.

"Is that the one showing the money?""

Daniel nodded.

"It should be.""

"Can you verify the recording hasn't been altered?""

Daniel opened the file's integrity report.

The system displayed a successful verification.

"According to the metadata, this copy has not been modified since it was created.""

Marcus exhaled.

"Good.""

He moved closer to the screen.

But Daniel hesitated.

"Sir, before we proceed, I want to make something clear.""

"What?""

"The camera records only what happens within its field of view. It won't necessarily show every detail.""

"I understand.""

"And the audio may not be available.""

"That's fine.""

Daniel selected the recording.

A preview window appeared.

It showed the foyer from an angle near the staircase.

The table was visible.

The bundles of money were not yet there.

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"That's before the incident.""

"Yes.""

The timeline showed the file's total duration.

Marcus looked toward the PLAY button.

His finger hovered above the mouse.

Then he stopped.

He remembered Vanessa grabbing his arm.

He remembered her voice.

Marcus, you don't need to check that.

He moved his hand away.

"Save the original first.""

Daniel nodded.

"I've already created a protected copy.""

"Make another one for the security company.""

"Yes, sir.""

A notification appeared on the laptop.

The recovery folder had been successfully preserved.

Marcus leaned back.

"Can we finally watch it?""

Daniel nodded.

He placed the cursor over PLAY.

Before he clicked, footsteps sounded on the staircase.

Vanessa appeared.

She was no longer wearing her red dress.

She had changed into a dark sweater and black trousers.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked directly at the laptop.

"You haven't watched it yet, have you?""

Marcus turned.

"Why?""

Vanessa approached slowly.

"Because I want to explain something first.""

"Then explain.""

She glanced at Daniel.

"Can he leave us alone?""

Marcus shook his head.

"No.""

"Marcus, this is between us.""

"Not anymore.""

She looked down at the laptop.

"That recording doesn't show what you think it shows.""

Marcus didn't move.

"How do you know what's on it?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"I know how the system works.""

Daniel quietly closed the laptop's secondary settings panel.

Marcus noticed her hands.

They were shaking.

"Did you bring the money into the foyer?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Why are you asking that?""

"Because that's what my son said.""

"Your son is confused.""

"Then the recording will clear everything up.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're making a mistake by watching it without hearing my side.""

Marcus gestured toward the chair.

"Sit down and tell me your side.""

She didn't sit.

Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

"I wrote down what happened.""

Marcus looked at it.

"What is that?""

"My statement.""

He didn't take it.

"Why did you write a statement before anyone asked you to?""

Vanessa's expression faltered.

"I wanted everything to be clear.""

Marcus finally accepted the paper.

It contained a typed account of the incident.

The document stated that the boy had been discovered attempting to remove money from the table.

It also stated that Vanessa had intervened to prevent him from leaving with it.

Marcus read the final paragraph twice.

Then he looked up.

"You wrote this before I came home?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"At what time?""

"Earlier.""

He glanced at the document's footer.

There was a timestamp.

*4:26 P.M.*

Marcus looked toward the laptop.

The first backup recording was timestamped 4:12.

The boy had not been accused until later.

Marcus slowly placed the statement on the table.

"You prepared this before I even knew anything had happened.""

Vanessa looked away.

"I wanted to protect the family.""

"From what?""

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Marcus turned back to the laptop.

"Play the recording.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus, please.""

He didn't look at her.

"Daniel.""

The technician moved the cursor toward the button.

The screen showed the first frame of the recording.

The foyer.

The empty table.

The open hallway.

And a timestamp from before the accusation.

Vanessa whispered:

"If you watch that, there's no going back.""

Marcus finally looked at her.

"That's exactly why I'm watching it.""

Daniel clicked PLAY.

The recording began.

But Marcus's phone rang before the first few seconds had passed.

The security company's senior investigator was calling.

Marcus answered.

"Mr. Reed," the investigator said, "we've reviewed the account history. There's something important you need to know about the separate archive.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"What?""

"The folder was created under your wife's account, but it wasn't intended to be private.""

Marcus frowned.

"Then what was it intended for?""

The investigator paused.

"It appears someone created it specifically so another person could receive the footage without leaving a normal download record.""

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

Her face had turned completely white.

"Who was supposed to receive it?""

The investigator read the registered recipient.

Marcus's fingers tightened around the phone.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Vanessa.

May you like

It was a name Marcus recognized from his own family.

*His younger brother, Ethan.*
