Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
Nathan arrived at the hospital shortly after noon.
He entered Serena's room carrying a paper coffee cup and wearing the expression of a man who had rehearsed his concern in the mirror. At thirty-seven, he resembled Adrian enough that strangers occasionally mistook them for twins, although Nathan's easy smile and restless eyes made him seem younger.
"Brother," he said, opening his arms.
Adrian didn't move.
Nathan's smile faded.
"You're not going to hug me?""
"Not until you tell me why you called the estate.""
Nathan glanced toward Serena.
She lay against the pillows, her face pale but alert. Her eyes followed him without a trace of warmth.
"Well," he said, "this is uncomfortable.""
"Answer the question.""
Nathan placed his coffee on the windowsill.
"Dad left some private financial documents at the house. I wanted to make sure they hadn't been lost.""
"What documents?""
"Company records. Tax information. Things you wouldn't understand unless you had spent time handling the family accounts.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"I run the company.""
"You run the public side of it. Dad kept certain matters separate.""
"What matters?""
Nathan gave a humorless laugh.
"Are you seriously interrogating me in a hospital room?""
"Yes.""
Nathan looked at Serena again.
"So this is what she's done. She's back, and suddenly everyone in the Bennett family is a criminal.""
Serena tried to sit up.
Adrian moved to help her, but she raised one hand, signaling that she wanted to speak for herself.
"You knew I was missing," she said.
Nathan's expression barely changed.
"Everyone knew you were missing.""
"You knew I hadn't left voluntarily.""
"That's a serious accusation.""
"Did you know where I was?""
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
Serena stared at him.
"You don't even need to think about it.""
"Because I didn't do anything!""
His voice rose sharply.
A nurse passing the open doorway looked inside. Nathan noticed and lowered his tone.
"Look, Serena. I'm sorry you've been through something terrible. But don't expect me to accept responsibility for every bad thing that happens in this family.""
Serena's hands trembled.
"I heard your voice.""
Nathan went still.
Adrian looked at her.
"What?""
"The night Vanessa locked me behind the wall, I heard someone talking outside the service panel. I couldn't see him, but I recognized his voice.""
She kept her eyes on Nathan.
"It was you.""
Nathan shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
"You said, 'She'll never make it to the wedding.''"
The color drained from his face.
Adrian stepped toward his brother.
"What did she mean?""
Nathan backed away.
"She's been confined in a dark space for God knows how long. She could have heard anything. She's confused.""
"Then why did you say you didn't know where she was?""
"Because I didn't!""
Serena swallowed.
"You told Vanessa that the documents had to be destroyed before the ceremony. You said Dad had made a mistake by giving them to me.""
Nathan's mouth opened.
No words came.
Adrian stared at him, suddenly seeing their childhood in a different light: Nathan standing beside Richard at business dinners, Nathan laughing at jokes that weren't funny, Nathan defending their father whenever Adrian challenged him.
Nathan had always known how to survive Richard's anger.
Perhaps he had learned to do more than survive it.
"What documents?"" Adrian demanded.
Nathan rubbed his forehead.
"You're making a mistake.""
"What documents did Dad give Serena?""
"Nothing important.""
"Then tell me what they were.""
Nathan looked at the door, calculating whether he could leave without making himself look guilty.
Adrian blocked his path.
"You're not walking out until you answer.""
"Move.""
"No.""
For a second, they stood face-to-face, two brothers who had shared bedrooms, holidays, and the funeral of the man who had raised them.
Then Nathan shoved Adrian's shoulder.
Adrian stumbled backward into a chair.
Serena cried out.
"Stop it!""
Nathan immediately looked horrified by what he'd done.
But Adrian straightened, his expression hardening.
"Touch me again," he said quietly, "and the police will have another reason to ask you questions.""
Nathan glanced toward the hallway.
"Fine. You want the truth? Dad discovered irregularities in the company accounts. He suspected someone was using the business to move money through shell companies.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
Nathan's face flushed.
"You think I wanted any of this? Dad kept everything secret. He told me to handle certain transfers, and I did what he asked.""
Adrian felt his stomach turn.
"You moved the money?""
"I processed transactions. I didn't know what they were for.""
"How much?""
Nathan looked away.
"Several million dollars.""
Serena's eyes widened.
Adrian gripped the back of the chair.
"And when Dad discovered it?""
"He threatened to report the transactions. He said he would turn over the records and cooperate with federal investigators.""
"Who was he protecting?""
Nathan hesitated.
Then he looked directly at Serena.
"Your former wife found the evidence. She threatened to expose everything unless Dad helped her get custody of Chloe.""
Serena shook her head.
"That's not true.""
"Of course you'd say that.""
"Richard gave me those documents because he knew someone was trying to frame Adrian.""
Nathan's expression changed.
Adrian turned toward her.
"What?""
Serena looked at him, her eyes shining.
"The accounts were connected to your name. The transactions were being routed through a subsidiary you had signed over to your father's control. If the records had surfaced without the full context, you would have looked responsible.""
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Convenient story.""
"Your father told me he suspected someone was setting Adrian up. He said the real beneficiary wasn't your company.""
Adrian felt a sickening clarity begin to emerge.
"Who was it?""
Serena reached for the envelope.
Before she could touch it, Nathan lunged forward.
Adrian caught his brother by the arm.
Nathan struggled, knocking the coffee cup from the windowsill. It struck the floor, spilling dark liquid across the tiles.
"Give me the key!"" Nathan shouted.
The room fell silent.
Adrian stared at him.
He hadn't mentioned the key.
Nathan realized his mistake.
His face went white.
Serena pulled the envelope toward herself.
"Get away from me!""
Nathan reached again, but Adrian shoved him back against the wall.
"You're finished.""
Nathan's expression twisted.
"You don't understand what you're doing. Dad built this family, and he destroyed it with his obsession with control. He kept money hidden, he kept secrets, and then he expected everyone else to clean up his mess.""
"Did you help Vanessa imprison Serena?""
Nathan's eyes flickered.
"I didn't lock her in that space.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Nathan's silence was answer enough.
Adrian released him and stepped away.
"Get out.""
Nathan straightened his jacket.
"You'll regret this.""
"Leave.""
Nathan reached the door, then turned.
"You should ask Serena why Dad was willing to risk everything for her. It wasn't because she was some innocent victim.""
Serena went rigid.
Nathan smiled without humor.
"Ask her what she found in the second file. Ask her why Dad was afraid she'd read it.""
Then he walked out.
Adrian started toward the door, but Serena caught his wrist.
"Don't follow him.""
"He just admitted he knew about the money.""
"He also wants you to believe that your father gave me the documents for reasons he never explained.""
"Why would he lie?""
"Because he needs you looking in the wrong direction.""
Adrian turned back to her.
"What was in the second file?""
Serena's eyes filled with tears.
"I never opened it.""
"Why not?""
"Your father told me it contained something personal. He said it could destroy the family if it became public. I was frightened, and I didn't want to use something private to protect myself.""
Adrian shook his head.
"Serena, someone kept you captive for three years. We don't have the luxury of protecting secrets anymore.""
She looked down at the envelope.
"I know.""
She carefully removed the photograph and the handwritten notes. Beneath them was a folded sheet of paper sealed inside a clear plastic sleeve.
Adrian opened it.
The document contained a list of financial transfers, each linked to a company registered under a different name. At the bottom, Richard had written a sentence in his own hand.
*If anything happens to me, the person responsible will be the one who stands to inherit everything.*
Adrian read it twice.
Richard had left his estate divided between his two sons, with Adrian controlling the majority of the business and Nathan entitled to a substantial share of the remaining assets.
But that wasn't the most disturbing part.
Attached to the document was a photocopy of a signed amendment to Richard's will.
It had been dated two days before Serena disappeared.
Under the amendment, Nathan would inherit the entire private investment portfolio if Adrian were ever declared legally incapacitated or convicted of a serious financial crime.
Adrian's hands began to shake.
"They were planning to take everything from me.""
Serena nodded.
"I think that's what your father was trying to stop.""
Adrian looked at the door through which Nathan had disappeared.
"And Vanessa?""
"She wanted to marry you. Nathan wanted the company. They needed me gone because I could prove the money wasn't yours.""
He felt the pieces shifting into place.
Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to replace Serena as Chloe's mother.
She had wanted to eliminate the one person who could challenge her version of the past.
And Nathan had stood to gain from the destruction of his own brother.
Adrian's phone rang.
Detective Ellis.
"Mr. Bennett, we have located Vanessa's vehicle.""
"Where?""
"Near the private airfield outside the city. It appears she may be preparing to leave the state.""
Adrian looked at Serena.
"Do you have a warrant?""
"We're seeking one now. But I need to ask you something. Did your brother come to the hospital?""
Adrian stiffened.
"Yes. Why?""
"Because we've just received a report that he attempted to access the evidence locker at the county courthouse this morning.""
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"What evidence?""
"The original records connected to Serena's disappearance.""
He looked down at Richard's handwritten warning.
The person who stood to inherit everything.
Nathan hadn't come to the hospital to check on his brother.
May you like
He had come for the key.
And whatever remained inside the old estate was valuable enough to make him risk being caught.
