Chapter 2: The Lies Beneath the Veil
The paramedics arrived within seven minutes.
To Adrian, it felt like an hour.
He remained on the floor beside Serena, holding her hand while the emergency team worked to assess her condition. Chloe refused to let go of her mother until a female paramedic gently explained that they needed room to help her.
“I’m coming with her,” Chloe insisted.
“Sweetheart, we need to get your mother onto the stretcher.””
“Then I'll hold her hand.””
The paramedic glanced at Adrian.
He nodded.
“Let her stay close.””
Chloe climbed onto the edge of the stretcher, gripping Serena's fingers while the paramedics fitted an oxygen mask over her face.
“Mommy, please wake up,” she whispered.
“I found you. You don't have to hide anymore.””
Adrian turned his face away.
He had spent three years telling himself that Serena had chosen to leave. He had watched Chloe cry herself to sleep, answered her questions with carefully rehearsed explanations, and convinced himself that the truth was painful but necessary.
Now every one of those explanations sounded like another cruelty.
A paramedic examined Serena's wrists and frowned.
“Sir, do you know how long she's been here?””
“No.””
“Was she injured before she was placed in that space?””
“I don't know.””
The paramedic looked at him with professional concern.
“We need to get her to the hospital. She's severely dehydrated, and these marks need to be assessed. I can't tell you the full extent of her injuries here.””
Adrian nodded, his throat tightening.
“Is she going to be okay?””
“We'll know more after the hospital evaluates her.””
He watched them lift Serena onto the stretcher.
As they wheeled her toward the exit, she suddenly opened her eyes.
“Chloe?””
“I'm here, Mommy!””
Serena tried to raise her head.
“Stay with your father.””
Chloe shook her head furiously.
“No. I'm staying with you.””
“Baby, listen to me.””
Serena's voice was faint, almost lost beneath the movement of the stretcher.
“Don't let them tell you I left.””
Chloe began crying again.
“I won't.””
Adrian walked beside them.
“I won't let anyone tell her that again,” he promised.
Serena looked at him.
There was no relief in her expression.
Only exhaustion.
“That's what you said last time,” she whispered.
The words stopped him cold.
Then the paramedics wheeled her through the doors, leaving him standing amid the wreckage of his wedding.
Behind him, the ballroom had become a scene of confusion. Guests clustered in frightened groups. Phones were raised. Whispers traveled from table to table.
Vanessa had disappeared from the altar.
Adrian spotted her near the side corridor, speaking urgently to the wedding coordinator.
“Vanessa!””
She turned.
For an instant, he saw naked panic in her eyes. Then her expression hardened into the composed face he knew from charity dinners, business events, and family photographs.
“Adrian, thank God. We need to get you away from these people. Someone has to explain what happened before the entire thing gets out of control.””
He approached her.
“What happened?””
“I told you. Serena is unstable.””
“She was locked behind a wall.””
“She could have hidden herself there.””
Adrian stared at her.
“She could have hidden herself?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“You don't know what she is capable of when she wants attention. She has always known how to manipulate you.””
For years, those words might have worked.
Now they sounded rehearsed.
“Then explain the marks on her wrists.””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the guests.
“I don't know anything about those.””
“Explain why you recognized her.””
“I didn't.””
“I saw your face.””
“You saw what you wanted to see.””
Her answer came with such practiced certainty that Adrian almost recognized the woman she had been pretending to be all along.
Almost.
He lowered his voice.
“Who was the man in the charcoal suit?””
Vanessa went still.
“What man?””
“The one who was standing by the service entrance. He looked at you, and then he left.””
“I have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Vanessa.””
She stepped closer and placed a hand against his chest.
“Listen to me. You're upset. Your daughter is frightened, and your ex-wife has clearly staged something designed to destroy our marriage. We need to think carefully before you start accusing people.””
Adrian removed her hand.
“Our marriage?””
Her eyes flashed.
“Yes, Adrian. Our marriage. The ceremony we were supposed to finish ten minutes ago.
The guests we invited. The life we planned.””
“My former wife was just carried out of here on a stretcher.””
“And I'm sorry she's hurt!””
“Are you?””
Vanessa stared at him.
He had never spoken to her like that before.
“I have stood by you for two years,” she said.
“I helped raise Chloe. I listened to you talk about Serena when you couldn't sleep. I was there when you were falling apart.””
“You were there when she disappeared.””
“And you needed me!””
The admission escaped before she could stop it.
They both heard it.
Adrian's expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I mean you were devastated. You needed someone who understood you. I helped you put your life back together.””
“Did you know where Serena was?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Adrian looked at her for several seconds.
Then he stepped back.
“I'm going to the hospital.””
She caught his arm.
“You cannot leave me here alone with this.””
He looked down at her fingers.
“Let go.””
“Adrian, please.””
“Let go of me.””
She released him.
He walked toward the exit without looking back.
Behind him, Vanessa called his name twice.
He didn't turn.
Outside, Chloe was already inside the ambulance beside her mother. Adrian climbed into the front passenger seat, and the vehicle pulled away from the venue.
As the siren rose above the traffic, he took out his phone and called his attorney.
“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””
“What happened? You're supposed to be getting married.””
“The wedding is over.””
There was a pause.
“What?””
“Serena has been found. She was hidden behind the altar decorations. She's being taken to the hospital.””
Marcus fell silent.
Then he asked the question Adrian had been afraid to hear.
“Do you think Vanessa did it?””
Adrian watched Chloe through the small partition. She was holding Serena's hand, whispering something into the oxygen mask.
“I don't know,” he answered.
“But I need you to find out everything you can about the last three years. Every communication, every report, every document involving Serena.””
“Adrian, if someone confined her—”
“I know.””
“And if Vanessa is involved, don't confront her without evidence.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I trusted her with my daughter.””
He ended the call before Marcus could respond.
At the hospital, nurses rushed Serena into an examination room. Adrian and Chloe were asked to wait outside while the medical team assessed her.
Chloe sat on a plastic chair, still wearing her flower-girl dress. Her knees were streaked with dust and crushed petals. A small scratch ran down her forearm.
Adrian knelt in front of her.
“Let me see your arm.””
She pulled it away.
“I'm fine.””
“Sweetheart, you got hurt.””
“Mommy got hurt.””
He had no answer.
Chloe looked at him with red, swollen eyes.
“Did you know she was alive?””
“No.””
“Did you look for her?””
Adrian felt the question settle between them.
“I did.””
“Then why did you stop?””
He swallowed.
“Because I thought she didn't want to come back.””
“Who told you that?””
“Vanessa showed me messages.””
“Did you ever hear Mommy say it?””
“No.””
“Did you ever see her write it?””
“No.””
Chloe's face crumpled.
“So you just believed Vanessa.””
Adrian sat back on his heels.
“Yes,” he said quietly.
“I did.””
She looked away.
He wanted to tell her he had been deceived, that he had been grieving too, that Vanessa had made him believe he was doing the right thing.
But none of those explanations changed what Chloe had endured.
“I was wrong,” he said.
“And I'm sorry.””
Chloe rubbed her eyes with the heel of her hand.
“Mommy told me you'd forget about her.””
Adrian's chest tightened.
“She told you that?””
“Before she disappeared. She said if anything happened, I should remember she loved me.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I did!””
Her voice echoed down the corridor.
Adrian flinched.
“You said I was imagining things. You said I was too young to understand.””
He remembered those conversations now. Chloe waking at night, insisting she had heard her mother calling from somewhere outside the house. Chloe refusing to let Vanessa brush her hair. Chloe hiding the birthday cards she had made for Serena beneath her mattress.
He had treated every sign of grief as a problem to be managed.
He had mistaken silence for healing.
“I'm sorry,” he said again.
Chloe looked at him, but she didn't move closer.
For the first time since she was born, Adrian had no promise that could make his daughter feel safe.
A nurse finally emerged from Serena's room.
“She is conscious,” she said.
“She's exhausted and dehydrated, but she's responding to treatment. The doctor will speak with you shortly.””
Chloe sprang from her chair.
“Can I see her?””
“In a moment.””
Adrian stood.
“Thank you.””
The nurse glanced at him.
“Mr. Bennett, there is something else. Your wife has asked us to contact law enforcement.””
“My ex-wife?””
“Yes. She says she was held against her will.””
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“Did she say who held her?””
The nurse hesitated.
“She gave us a name.””
“Whose?””
“Vanessa Bennett.””
For several seconds, the corridor seemed to tilt beneath Adrian's feet.
He looked toward the examination room.
Then his phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent him a message.
*If you want to know what really happened to Serena, ask your bride what she did on October 14, three years ago.*
A second message appeared before he could respond.
*And ask her why your father paid for it.*
Adrian stared at the screen.
May you like
His father, Richard Bennett, had died eighteen months earlier.
And as far as Adrian knew, Richard had never even met Vanessa.
