Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Roses

“Stop her!””

Vanessa Bennett’s scream sliced through the wedding music just as ten-year-old Chloe Bennett tore another handful of roses from the wall behind the altar.

White and blush petals fluttered across the cream-colored aisle. A guest in the front row gasped as a champagne flute slipped from her fingers and shattered against the marble floor. Somewhere near the back, a man stood abruptly, knocking his chair into the person behind him.

But Chloe didn’t stop.

She seized another cluster of roses and pulled with both hands, her small shoulders shaking with the effort. The decorative branches bent, exposing glimpses of the dark framework behind them.

“Chloe!”” Adrian Bennett shouted.

“Get away from there!””

The forty-year-old groom hurried down the aisle, his polished shoes sliding slightly against the smooth floor. His black tuxedo had cost more than most people spent on a month’s rent, and the ceremony had been planned down to the smallest detail. Nothing about this afternoon was supposed to be unpredictable.

Least of all his daughter.

Chloe twisted away when he reached for her.

“She’s in there!””

Adrian stopped.

“What did you say?””

“She’s in there!”” Chloe screamed again, pointing at the rose wall. Tears streamed down her face, cutting tracks through the light dusting of makeup someone had applied that morning.

“I heard her! Daddy, I heard Mommy!””

The guests exchanged bewildered looks.

Vanessa stood beneath the white floral arch, her designer wedding gown spreading around her feet. At thirty-three, she looked like the kind of bride featured in luxury magazines. Her dark hair was arranged in a flawless chignon, diamonds glittered at her throat, and a bouquet of ivory roses rested in her hands.

She had spent nearly a year planning this wedding.

Now her fingers tightened around the bouquet until several stems snapped.

“Adrian, please,” she said, forcing a brittle smile.

“Your daughter is having another episode. Someone needs to take her outside before she ruins everything.””

Chloe whipped around.

“I am not crazy!””

Her voice cracked on the final word.

For a moment, Adrian saw something beneath his daughter’s terror that frightened him more than the outburst itself. Chloe wasn't merely upset. She was desperate, the way she had been the night Serena disappeared.

Three years earlier, his former wife had vanished from his life after a bitter separation. He had been told Serena had abandoned their daughter, left town, and wanted no further contact with either of them.

He had believed it.

Or perhaps he had simply needed to believe it.

“Chloe,” he said, lowering his voice, “come here. We can talk about this.””

“No!”” She backed toward the roses.

“You never listen! Nobody listens!””

She grabbed the lower branches and yanked.

The hidden frame shuddered.

A pale hand slipped through the opening.

A woman in the second row screamed.

Adrian's expression emptied.

The hand was trembling. Its fingers curled weakly against the artificial greenery, then disappeared.

“What the hell is that?”” someone whispered.

Chloe dropped to her knees and tore at the flowers with renewed desperation. Petals scattered over her white dress. One branch scraped her forearm, leaving a thin red line, but she barely noticed.

“Mommy! I'm here!””

“Chloe, stop!”” Vanessa shrieked.

This time, there was no attempt to disguise her anger.

She rushed forward, reaching for the child, but Adrian moved between them.

“Don't touch her.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“I said don't touch her.””

The unfamiliar coldness in his voice seemed to shock her more than the ruined decorations. She stopped, her lips parting in disbelief.

Behind Adrian, the flower wall lurched forward.

Two support brackets snapped loose with a sharp crack. The elaborate structure collapsed outward, spilling roses and decorative vines across the floor.

A narrow cavity appeared behind it.

Inside lay a woman.

She was curled on her side against the wall, her dark hair clinging to her damp forehead. Her once-elegant dress was wrinkled and stained. Her face had grown frighteningly pale, and her lips looked dry and cracked.

A strip of fabric was tied around one wrist. Her other hand bore red marks that looked painfully raw.

For a heartbeat, nobody moved.

Then Chloe made a broken sound.

“Mommy.””

The woman opened her eyes.

They struggled to focus, moving across the fallen flowers until they found the little girl kneeling in front of her.

“Chloe?”” she whispered.

Chloe threw herself forward.

“Mommy! Mommy, I found you!””

She wrapped both arms around her mother’s neck, sobbing so violently that her entire body shook. The woman winced as Chloe collided with her, but she immediately gathered her daughter close, pressing her trembling lips against the child's hair.

“Oh, baby,” she murmured.

“My baby.””

Chloe clung to her as though someone might tear them apart again.

“I looked for you. I told Daddy you were coming back. I told everybody you didn't leave me.””

The woman closed her eyes, and a tear slipped down her cheek.

“I know, sweetheart. I know.””

Adrian dropped to his knees.

He knew that face.

Even after three years, even beneath the exhaustion and the bruises, he knew the shape of her eyes, the curve of her mouth, the small scar near her eyebrow from the bicycle accident they had laughed about on their first vacation together.

“Serena?””

His former wife's eyes moved toward him.

Fear crossed her face so quickly that he almost missed it.

“Adrian,” she breathed.

He reached for her, then hesitated when she recoiled.

The movement struck him harder than he expected.

“It's me,” he said, his voice suddenly unsteady.

“Serena, it's me. You're safe.””

She looked at him as if she desperately wanted to believe those words but had learned the cost of believing anyone.

“Don't let her take me.””

Adrian glanced at the red marks around her wrist.

“Who?””

Serena's gaze darted toward the altar.

Vanessa stood amid the fallen roses, motionless beneath the shattered floral arch.

Adrian followed Serena's stare.

His bride was not looking at the injured woman with confusion or concern.

She was staring at her as if a ghost had risen from the grave.

“Vanessa?”” Adrian asked.

His fiancée's bouquet slipped from her hand.

It landed among the scattered petals.

Serena clutched Chloe closer, her fingers trembling against the girl's back.

“She locked me in here,” she whispered.

Adrian felt the blood drain from his face.

“What?””

Serena swallowed painfully.

“She said nobody would hear me. She said you would marry her before anyone found out.””

A murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She's lying.””

But her voice came too quickly. Too sharply.

Adrian looked from Serena to Vanessa, searching the face of the woman he had trusted with his home, his daughter, and the future he thought he understood.

“Call an ambulance!”” he shouted.

Several guests scrambled for their phones. Adrian's best man pushed through the crowd, shouting for someone to clear the aisle. An older woman knelt beside Serena and asked whether she could hear her.

Serena barely responded.

“Daddy?”” Chloe whispered.

Adrian turned toward his daughter.

She was still holding her mother, but she looked up at him with a hurt so deep that he felt it like a physical blow.

“You said Mommy left us.””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“You said she didn't want me anymore.””

“Chloe—”

“I waited for her birthday. I saved her a seat at Christmas.”” Her voice broke.

“You told me to stop asking about her.””

Adrian looked away for a second, unable to withstand the accusation in his daughter's eyes.

He had told himself he was protecting Chloe from disappointment. Vanessa had shown him messages that supposedly came from Serena, messages explaining that she wanted a new life without the responsibilities of motherhood.

He had never questioned why he couldn't speak to Serena directly.

He had never asked why every attempt to contact her had been answered through Vanessa.

He had never wondered why the woman he loved seemed so eager to make sure his former wife stayed forgotten.

Now Serena was lying in a cavity behind his wedding altar, barely conscious, while his daughter held on to her as though the world were ending.

And Vanessa had recognized her before anyone else.

“Adrian,” Vanessa said, taking a cautious step forward.

“You need to listen to me.””

He stood slowly.

For the first time that afternoon, he looked at her without affection.

“What happened to my wife?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Your ex-wife. And you have no idea what she is capable of.””

Serena flinched at the words.

Adrian saw it.

He also saw Vanessa glance toward the side entrance, then toward the corridor leading to the service rooms.

She was calculating something.

Before he could speak again, Serena caught his sleeve.

“Don't let her leave,” she whispered.

Adrian looked down at her.

“Why?””

Serena's eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Because she wasn't working alone.””

Then her head fell against Chloe's shoulder, and her eyes closed.

“Serena!””

Adrian reached for her as the guests surged forward.

A woman began crying. Someone shouted that the ambulance was on its way. Chloe screamed for her mother to wake up.

And Vanessa stood beside the altar, surrounded by thousands of dollars' worth of ruined flowers, watching the wedding she had fought so hard to secure collapse around her.

Adrian turned toward her one last time.

“Don't move.””

For once, Vanessa didn't answer.

But as the first siren sounded outside the venue, her gaze shifted toward the back of the room.

A man in a charcoal suit stood near the service entrance.

He met her eyes.

Then, without a word, he disappeared through the door.

Vanessa's face went white.

May you like

Adrian noticed.

And suddenly, the woman behind the roses was no longer the only mystery at his wedding.
