Chapter 3: The Date That Changed Everything

Adrian read the message three times.

October 14.

Three years earlier, that date had fallen on a Monday. He remembered because Serena had disappeared that week, and because he had spent the following days calling hospitals, police departments, and anyone who might have seen her.

He had never received a credible answer.

The official report had eventually been closed after investigators found no evidence of a crime. Serena's car had been discovered at a train station, and a witness claimed to have seen a woman matching her description board a train.

Vanessa had been the one to tell him about the witness.

She had also been the one to persuade him that continuing the search would only prolong Chloe's suffering.

Now someone was telling him that his father had paid for Serena's disappearance.

Richard Bennett had been a formidable man. He had built a regional property empire from a single construction company, cultivated friendships with politicians, and treated family disagreements like business negotiations.

He had also disapproved of Serena.

Not because she was unkind. She was the opposite: warm, outspoken, and stubbornly unwilling to be intimidated by wealth.

Richard had once told Adrian that Serena would destroy the family.

Adrian had dismissed it as another of his father's controlling pronouncements.

He had never imagined Richard might have meant something more literal.

“Daddy?””

Chloe stood beside him, watching his face.

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Is Mommy okay?””

“The doctors are taking care of her.””

“Can we see her now?””

A nurse appeared at the doorway and beckoned them inside.

Serena lay in a hospital bed beneath a thin white blanket. An intravenous line ran into her arm, and a monitor beside the bed recorded her heartbeat. Her hair had been brushed away from her face, revealing how exhausted she looked.

But when Chloe entered, Serena's expression changed.

“There you are,” she whispered.

Chloe rushed to the bedside and carefully climbed into the chair beside her.

“I thought I'd never see you again.””

Serena reached for her hand.

“I'm sorry, baby.””

“You didn't leave me.””

“No.”” Serena's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't.””

Chloe pressed her face against her mother's arm.

“I knew it.””

Serena kissed the top of her head.

“You were so brave.””

Adrian remained near the doorway, reluctant to intrude on a reunion he had spent three years believing would never happen.

Serena looked up at him.

“Come here.””

He approached the bed.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The monitor continued its steady rhythm, filling the silence neither seemed able to break.

Finally, Adrian pulled a chair closer.

“What happened to you?””

Serena glanced toward Chloe.

“I want to tell you everything. But not in front of her.””

Chloe lifted her head.

“I'm not a baby.””

“I know you aren't,” Serena said gently.

“But some of what happened was frightening, and you deserve to enjoy being here with me without having to hear all of it right now.””

Chloe looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

“We'll make sure you get answers, sweetheart. I promise.””

This time, he understood that a promise was not the same as a guarantee.

Chloe reluctantly agreed to wait with a hospital volunteer in the family lounge, where she could remain nearby.

When the door closed, Serena's expression hardened.

“Did Vanessa get arrested?””

“Not yet.””

“Then don't tell her where I am beyond what's already known. Don't let her speak to Chloe alone. And don't trust anyone who says she acted by herself.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“You said she locked you behind the wall. How long were you there?””

“I don't know exactly. A day, perhaps a little longer. I lost track.””

“A day?””

Serena closed her eyes.

“The room behind the flowers wasn't meant to be a room. It was a narrow service recess between the temporary partition and the ballroom wall. There was an access panel. Someone had installed a lock on the other side.””

“How did you get in there?””

“Vanessa told me Chloe had been in an accident.””

Adrian went still.

“What?””

“She called me from a number I didn't recognize. She said Chloe had been taken to a clinic and that you were too angry to speak to me. She said if I wanted to see our daughter, I had to come alone.””

Serena's fingers tightened around the blanket.

“I knew something was wrong, but I thought she might be telling the truth about Chloe. I went to the address she gave me. A man met me there and took my phone. Then Vanessa arrived.””

“Who was the man?””

“I didn't know him. He wore a charcoal suit.””

Adrian felt the room grow colder.

“The man from the wedding?””

“I think so.””

Serena took a shallow breath.

“Vanessa said I had made a terrible mistake by coming back. She told me you were finally happy and that I was going to destroy everything if I tried to contact you.””

“Why didn't you call the police?””

“I tried. The man took my phone before I could make a call.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“What happened next?””

“They brought me to the venue after dark. The rose wall had already been assembled, but the workers had gone. Vanessa told me that if I signed a statement saying I had voluntarily abandoned my family, she would let me leave.””

“And you refused?””

“Of course I refused.””

Her eyes shone with anger.

“She showed me a photograph of Chloe sleeping in her bedroom. She said she had people watching her. Then she told me that if I tried to escape, Chloe would pay for it.””

Adrian gripped the arms of his chair.

“She threatened our daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you find a way to contact me?””

Serena looked at him with an expression so wounded that he immediately regretted the question.

“I tried.””

She spoke quietly, but every word landed with devastating precision.

“The first night, I shouted until my throat bled. The next day, someone brought me water and told me that you had signed papers giving Vanessa authority over Chloe. He said you had agreed I was a danger to my own child.””

Adrian shook his head.

“I never signed anything like that.””

“I know that now.””

She looked toward the door.

“Then they showed me copies of messages supposedly written by you. You told Vanessa I was unstable. You said you never wanted me near Chloe again.””

“I never wrote those messages.””

“I believed you might have. After the divorce, you stopped answering my calls. Every time I tried to explain myself, Vanessa told me you didn't want to hear from me.””

Adrian's face tightened.

“I thought you had abandoned us.””

“And I thought you had chosen to believe I was a bad mother.””

The silence between them became almost unbearable.

Neither had known the full extent of what was happening. Yet their separation had given Vanessa the space to turn misunderstanding into a weapon.

“Why keep you there?”” Adrian asked.

Serena looked down at her hands.

“Because I had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“A file your father gave me shortly before I disappeared.””

Adrian stared at her.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

She reached toward the bedside table, where a nurse had placed a plastic bag containing the few belongings she had arrived with. Inside lay a small, battered envelope sealed with clear tape.

Serena nodded toward it.

“It's all I have left.””

Adrian picked up the envelope carefully.

Inside was a folded photograph, several pages of handwritten notes, and a small brass key.

He unfolded the photograph first.

It showed Richard Bennett standing outside a downtown office building. Beside him stood Vanessa, much younger, wearing a dark coat. A third person had been partially cut out of the frame.

On the back, someone had written a date.

October 14.

Three years earlier.

Adrian's pulse quickened.

“What is this?””

“Your father came to see me that morning,” Serena said.

“He told me Vanessa was planning something. He said he had discovered that she was using your company to move money through accounts you didn't know existed.””

Adrian looked up.

“That makes no sense.””

“Your father said the same thing. He didn't want to believe it either. He thought he could control the situation privately.””

“Why would he give you this?””

“Because I was the only person who had found the original transactions. I worked in accounting before Chloe was born, Adrian. I recognized discrepancies in some documents you asked me to review.””

Adrian remembered the incident.

Months before Serena disappeared, he had brought home a stack of company statements. She had noticed transfers to a consulting firm with no clear business purpose.

He had asked his finance director about it.

The director had reassured him that everything was legitimate.

Adrian had forgotten the matter.

Serena hadn't.

“I made copies,” she continued.

“Your father wanted them back. I refused to hand over the originals until he agreed to protect Chloe if anything happened to me.””

“Protect her from Vanessa?””

“From whoever was helping Vanessa.””

Adrian looked down at the brass key.

“What does this open?””

“I don't know. Your father gave it to me the same day. He said the information I needed was stored somewhere safe. He told me to use the key only if I couldn't reach him.””

“Why didn't you tell the police about the money?””

“I tried to report the financial records after I escaped once. Before I could meet the investigator, I was intercepted. After that, I understood how far this went.””

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

His father had been dead for eighteen months. Whatever explanation Richard might have offered was now buried with him.

“Did Vanessa know about the file?””

“She knew I had copies. That's why she couldn't simply let me go.””

Adrian stood and walked toward the window.

Beyond the glass, the city continued as though nothing had happened. Cars moved through intersections. People crossed the street carrying coffee. Somewhere, wedding guests were probably already posting photographs of the collapsed rose wall.

His entire life had changed in less than an hour.

“There's something else,” Serena said.

He turned.

“The night before I disappeared, I heard Vanessa arguing with your father over the phone. She told him he had promised to take care of the problem. He told her he wouldn't let her hurt Chloe.””

Adrian's throat tightened.

“What did she say?””

Serena's eyes filled with fear.

“She said Chloe wasn't the problem.””

She paused, fighting to steady her breathing.

“You were.””

Adrian stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

“I don't know. But I think your father knew Vanessa was planning to take control of more than your money.””

A knock sounded at the door.

Adrian turned.

Marcus, his attorney, stood in the doorway holding a tablet and a thick folder.

“I need you to see something,” Marcus said.

“The police have started reviewing the wedding venue's security footage.””

Adrian moved toward him.

“What did they find?””

Marcus glanced at Serena, then lowered his voice.

“Someone entered the ballroom through the service corridor last night. The camera recorded him carrying a black case.””

“Who?””

Marcus turned the tablet around.

The image was grainy, but the man's face was visible.

Adrian recognized him immediately.

It was his father's former personal security chief, Daniel Cross.

The man who had supposedly left the Bennett family payroll two years ago.

The man Adrian had believed was living overseas.

Marcus enlarged the image.

“There's more,” he said.

“He didn't leave the venue until this morning.””

Adrian looked from the screen to Serena.

Her face had gone pale.

“That's him,” she whispered.

“That's the man who took my phone.””

Adrian felt his hands curl into fists.

“Find him,” he told Marcus.

“I'm already working on it.””

“No. I want every record, every address, every account connected to him. And I want the police informed immediately.””

Marcus nodded and stepped into the corridor to make the calls.

Adrian turned back toward Serena.

For the first time since he had entered the hospital, she looked less frightened than furious.

“Vanessa didn't do this alone,” she said.

Adrian placed the photograph and key back inside the envelope.

“No,” he replied.

“She didn't.””

His phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number appeared.

*Your father left you a warning, Adrian. The key opens a box at the old Bennett estate. Go there before Vanessa does.*

May you like

A second line appeared beneath it.

*And don't trust your brother.*
