Chapter 1 - The Woman at the Door

The first thing Monica Carter noticed was the red coat.

It was expensive. Beautifully tailored, with gold buttons that caught the porch light. The woman wearing it stood beside a silver Mercedes, checking her reflection in her phone before climbing the steps.

Monica watched through the narrow window beside her front door.

She already knew who it was.

Vanessa Price.

Thirty-two years old. Director of Client Relations at Alder & Ash Events. Excellent at her job, according to every performance report Monica had read.

And for the past seven months, sleeping with Monica's husband.

The doorbell rang twice.

Monica set her glass of water on the entryway table and opened the door.

"Can I help you?"

Vanessa looked her up and down.

The navy tracksuit. The worn sneakers. The hair pulled into a loose bun.

Something resembling satisfaction crossed her face.

"So you're Monica."

"And you are?"

"Vanessa."

Monica waited.

Vanessa had rehearsed this conversation during the drive. She had imagined screaming, tears, perhaps a desperate demand to leave Daniel alone.

She hadn't prepared for a woman who looked mildly inconvenienced.

"I'm going to be direct," Vanessa said. "Daniel and I are together."

A car passed slowly along the quiet suburban street.

Monica said nothing.

"We've been seeing each other for months."

"I heard you."

Vanessa shifted her handbag higher on her shoulder.

"Well, I thought you deserved to know why your marriage isn't working."

Monica's expression remained unchanged.

"Did Daniel ask you to come here?"

"No. He doesn't know."

"That was probably your first mistake."

Vanessa gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Excuse me?"

"Showing up at somebody's house without knowing what you're walking into."

The remark stung.

Vanessa straightened her shoulders.

"Maybe if you paid attention to your husband, he wouldn't need another woman. Men don't just leave happy marriages."

Monica looked at her for a moment.

Then she smiled.

Not warmly.

"Congratulations."

Vanessa frowned.

"What?"

"Congratulations on your relationship. Now, what exactly would you like me to do about it?"

"I want you to let him go."

"Has he asked me to?"

"He says you're making everything difficult."

"Interesting."

"He wants to be with me."

"Then why are you standing on my porch instead of him?"

Vanessa's cheeks warmed.

Because that was the problem.

For months, Daniel had promised that he would end his marriage. First after the holidays. Then after a major business contract. Then once his finances were settled.

Every deadline disappeared.

And whenever Vanessa pressed him, he became affectionate, evasive, or angry.

"He won't divorce you," she admitted. "So somebody had to force this conversation."

For the first time, Monica's smile disappeared.

"That's why you came here?"

"Yes."

"Because he won't leave?"

"Because he loves me."

Monica folded her arms.

"Vanessa, I've known about you for quite some time."

The silence that followed felt heavier than the evening air.

Vanessa stared.

"You're lying."

"No."

"If you knew, why haven't you done anything?"

"Oh, I've been doing quite a lot."

Monica glanced toward the handbag on Vanessa's shoulder.

"Does Daniel still make you submit your department expenses directly to him?"

Vanessa blinked.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything."

Monica stepped forward, forcing Vanessa to shift backward.

"Listen carefully. Until I finish signing the necessary paperwork, don't delete anything, don't move company money, and don't let Daniel convince you to put your name on documents you don't understand."

Vanessa's confidence began to drain.

"Who do you think you are?"

Monica's voice stayed perfectly level.

"The person whose company pays your salary."

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Monica continued.

"You came here to announce that you're my husband's mistress. What he apparently forgot to explain is that you're also my employee."

She gave a small, humorless smile.

"So I suppose that makes you my side mistress too."

"That's impossible."

"Monday morning. Nine o'clock. My office."

"Your office?"

"You'll find out."

Monica reached for the door.

"And Vanessa?"

The younger woman looked up.

"Next time a married man promises you a future, make sure he actually owns the one he's offering."

The door slammed.

Vanessa stood frozen beneath the porch light.

She had come expecting to destroy another woman's confidence.

Instead, she was suddenly wondering how much of her own life had been built on a lie.

And why Daniel had never once introduced his wife as the woman who owned Alder & Ash.
