Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Silence

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

The question stayed in the air.

Who trained you?

It wasn’t just curiosity anymore.

It was a challenge.

I looked at Sergeant Vance.

Then at Captain Reynolds.

Then at Lowell.

Everyone was waiting.

I hated that feeling.

Like a spotlight had been placed over my head.

Like the quiet person I had worked so hard to become was disappearing.

“Specialist?”” Lowell asked.

I lowered my hands.

“My father.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Even Vance.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

Vance frowned.

“Your father taught you military combatives?””

“No.””

The room became quieter.

“He taught me discipline.””

Vance stared at me.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one you’re getting.””

A few soldiers looked at each other.

They weren’t used to hearing someone talk back to Vance.

Especially not calmly.

Vance stepped closer.

“You think being mysterious makes you impressive?””

“No.””

“Then why hide everything?””

I looked at him.

“Because I never wanted this.””

That stopped him.

For a moment.

Only a moment.

Then he looked away.

“You expect people to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s true.””

The simplicity of the answer bothered him.

People expected excuses.

Defenses.

Arguments.

They didn’t know what to do with someone who refused to fight emotionally.

Captain Reynolds finally spoke.

“Sergeant Vance, that’s enough.””

Vance looked at him.

“Captain—”

“Enough.””

Vance stepped back.

But I could see it.

The questions were still there.

The suspicion.

The frustration.

He wasn’t finished.

Neither was anyone else.

Later that afternoon, I sat alone outside the barracks.

The sun was setting over Fort Grafton.

For the first time all day, nobody was watching.

That was when I finally allowed myself to breathe.

My phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then I saw the first line.

*You shouldn’t have let them see.*

My stomach tightened.

I opened the message.

There was only one more sentence.

*They will start asking why the best fighter in your unit disappeared three years ago.*

I stopped breathing for a second.

Because that wasn’t something many people knew.

Three years ago, I had been someone else.

Before the transfer.

Before the silence.

Before Fort Grafton.

I looked around the empty courtyard.

Nobody was there.

Nobody except the person who had somehow found me.

Another message appeared.

*Your father wanted you hidden.*

My fingers froze.

Then the final message arrived.

*But Sergeant Vance just opened the door.*

I stared at the screen.

Because there was only one person who knew the truth about my father.

And that person was supposed to be gone.

Forever.

I stood up slowly.

The quiet evening suddenly felt different.

Because I realized Sergeant Vance’s question had not been the beginning of the problem.

It had been the warning.

Someone had been waiting for me to be noticed.

May you like

And now that I had been seen…

They were coming.
