Chapter 1 - The Photograph Beneath the Wedding Dress

The first thing Nicole noticed was that her stepmother looked frightened.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Frightened.

The sixteen-year-old stood beside her parents' bed, holding an old photograph between her fingers. Afternoon sunlight fell across the faded picture, illuminating two smiling young women standing outside a small sewing shop.

One was Nicole's biological mother, Ava.

The other was Tessa.

Her stepmother.

Nicole looked from the photograph to the woman standing across from her.

"You knew my mother?"

Tessa's lips parted.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Nicole stared at her.

"You knew her before you married Dad?"

Tessa glanced toward Marcus.

"Nicole, it's complicated."

Marcus stepped forward.

"What do you mean, you knew Ava?"

Tessa's shoulders tightened.

"I knew her years ago."

"You never told me that."

"And you never asked how I knew about the wedding dress."

The words landed heavily.

On the bed lay an old ivory wedding gown, its delicate lace sleeves yellowed slightly with age. Beside it sat a blue tin keepsake box filled with photographs, folded papers, and small pieces of jewelry.

Nicole had discovered the box while helping Tessa clear an upstairs closet.

The wedding dress had been wrapped in a faded cotton sheet.

Nicole recognized it immediately.

She had seen pictures of her mother wearing it.

But she had never known the dress was still in the house.

"Why do you have Mom's wedding dress?" she asked.

Tessa rubbed her palms together.

"She wanted you to have it someday."

Nicole's breath caught.

"She gave it to you?"

Tessa looked away.

Marcus moved closer.

"Tessa. I need you to tell me what's going on."

For seven years, Nicole had lived with an unfinished explanation of her mother's disappearance.

Her parents separated when she was nine.

Ava moved out.

At first, there were promises of weekend visits and phone calls.

Then the visits stopped.

The calls became less frequent.

Eventually, there was nothing.

Marcus had told Nicole that her mother needed to start a different life.

He never called Ava a bad woman.

But whenever Nicole asked why her mother didn't come back, his answer was almost always the same.

"Some people don't know how to stay, sweetheart."

Nicole had spent years believing those words.

Now she was staring at a photograph proving her stepmother knew things nobody had told her.

"When was this taken?" she asked.

Tessa swallowed.

"Six years ago."

Nicole examined the photograph again.

Her mother looked happy.

Not like someone running away from her past.

Like someone who still believed she had a future.

Nicole turned the picture over.

A string of numbers was written across the back in blue ink.

Beneath them were two words.

FOR NICOLE.

"What are these numbers?"

Tessa's eyes widened.

"Nicole, put that down."

"Why?"

"Because there's more to this than you understand."

Marcus held out his hand.

"Let me see."

Nicole passed him the photograph.

He studied the handwriting.

Then he looked toward his wife.

"That's Ava's writing."

Tessa said nothing.

"Why would she write Nicole's name on the back of a picture of you two?"

Tessa's expression crumpled.

"Because she trusted me with something."

Marcus stared at her.

"What something?"

Before she could answer, a small voice interrupted.

"Daddy?"

Seven-year-old Elijah stood beside the bed.

He was Tessa's son from an earlier relationship, but Nicole had called him her little brother for years.

He was holding the blue tin box.

"There's another paper inside."

Marcus turned.

"What paper?"

Elijah pointed.

"That envelope. It has Nicole's name."

Marcus crossed the room.

Beneath the photographs lay an old cream-colored envelope.

Across the front, in unmistakable blue handwriting, was one word.

NICOLE.

Marcus reached for it.

Tessa suddenly stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't!"

Her voice was sharp enough to startle Elijah.

Marcus froze.

Then slowly, he turned toward her.

"Why?"

Tessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because you don't know what opening that letter will do."

Marcus looked down at the envelope.

For the first time, Nicole noticed his hands trembling.

"Ava stopped speaking to me for a reason," he said quietly. "And I've spent years telling myself I understood why."

He looked at Tessa.

"Now I'm beginning to think I didn't."

Nicole moved beside him.

"Dad, what happened between you and Mom?"

Marcus stared at the letter.

Then he tore open the envelope.

Tessa covered her mouth.

Inside were three folded pages.

Marcus unfolded the first.

He began reading.

And when he reached the second sentence, all the color drained from his face.

Because Ava had written:

May you like

"My sweet Nicole, if you're reading this, please understand one thing before anyone tells you another story.

I never stopped trying to come back to you."
