Chapter 4 - The Cost of Standing Tall

On Monday morning, three sponsors called Bright Futures Alliance asking whether the gala was still taking place.

By lunchtime, Dr. Price had forwarded Naomi a message from a concerned board member.

Vanessa's photograph had circulated through a private group chat, accompanied by claims that the Juniper Room mistreated influential guests.

Naomi sat in her office, listening to Andre explain the situation.

"Two sponsors want assurances. One asked whether we should consider moving the event."

"Moving it where?"

"Dr. Price says another venue has availability, but she doesn't want to change plans unless necessary."

Naomi rubbed her forehead.

The restaurant had already ordered supplies and scheduled extra employees.

Losing the event wouldn't destroy the Juniper Room.

But it would hurt.

Eighty-six dinner reservations represented real revenue. More importantly, the gala provided extra shifts to employees counting on the money.

Andre placed the financial breakdown on her desk.

"I could call Vanessa and apologize for how everything happened."

Naomi looked up.

"Apologize for refusing to make a woman kneel?"

"No. For the public confrontation. For the embarrassment."

"And what happens after that?"

"We keep the event. Everyone moves forward."

Naomi stared at the numbers.

There had been a time when she might have agreed.

During her first year as an owner, one bad month could have destroyed everything she'd built.

She remembered sitting at her kitchen table at two in the morning, deciding whether she could afford to pay herself.

She remembered calling her mother, pretending everything was fine.

And she remembered Evelyn saying, "You can survive a hard season, baby. Just don't lose yourself trying to get through it."

Naomi looked at Andre.

"If Vanessa had insulted you in front of everyone, would you want me to make peace by saying you embarrassed her?"

He didn't respond.

"That's what I'm asking Jasmine and Gloria to accept."

Andre pulled out a chair.

"Then what do you want to do?"

"I want us to handle this fairly, without hiding anything."

Naomi opened the photograph Vanessa had circulated.

"The photo is real. I was wearing a uniform. I was working at her table. I made a decision to observe service without telling the whole team."

She paused.

"That part deserves an explanation. Maybe even an apology to my own employees."

"But not to Vanessa?"

"I can acknowledge that being revealed publicly was uncomfortable. I can't pretend she was mistreated because I wouldn't let her humiliate me."

They drafted a private response to Dr. Price.

It described the encounter factually, including the dropped napkin, Vanessa's comments, Andre's intervention, and the staffing request.

Naomi attached no public accusations.

She made no threats.

She simply requested that employee assignments remain under restaurant management and that every event representative follow the same standard of respectful conduct.

Then she did something Andre hadn't expected.

She called the full service team together before the dinner shift.

Jasmine, Gloria, the bartenders, the servers, and the kitchen leads gathered in the empty dining room.

Naomi stood beside table twelve.

The same table where Vanessa had dropped the napkin.

"I owe you something," she began.

Several employees exchanged glances.

"I've always said we treat people with dignity here. But I learned this week that some of you didn't feel comfortable telling management when customers crossed the line."

She looked at Jasmine.

"And instead of asking you what was happening, I put on a uniform to find out for myself."

Naomi swallowed.

"I thought I was learning about our guests. I should also have been listening to you."

Gloria nodded slowly.

Naomi continued.

"From now on, every employee has the right to call a manager when a guest becomes abusive. Nobody is required to accept personal insults. Managers will document complaints fairly, including what staff members report, and no employee will lose shifts or be punished for raising a concern in good faith."

Andre stepped forward.

"And I'm responsible for making sure that happens," he said.

Jasmine raised her hand.

"What if the customer threatens to leave a bad review?"

Naomi answered immediately.

"Then we'll address the review honestly. A bad review isn't a reason to abandon our people."

The room stayed quiet.

Then one of the cooks started clapping.

Others joined.

Jasmine wiped her cheek before anyone could notice.

For a few minutes, Naomi felt the pressure ease.

Then her phone vibrated.

Dr. Price.

Naomi stepped aside to answer.

"Ms. Carter," the woman said, "I appreciate your explanation. But Vanessa is threatening to withdraw from the entire gala committee unless you issue a formal apology."

Naomi's stomach tightened.

"Does she have the authority to cancel the event?"

"No. The Alliance signed the agreement. But she's coordinated several important sponsors, and some board members are worried about losing their support."

Dr. Price paused.

"I need everyone in the room Thursday. I hope we can resolve this without damaging the scholarship program."

When Naomi ended the call, she found Jasmine standing nearby.

"Is the gala canceled?"

"Not yet."

Jasmine took a breath.

"Ms. Carter, you don't have to risk the restaurant for us."

Naomi looked at her young employee.

For years, Naomi had measured success through reservations, revenue, and the number of people who wanted a table in her dining room.

Now, standing beside the woman whose name had appeared on Vanessa's exclusion list, she faced a different calculation.

Protecting her people might cost her something.

And on Thursday, she would have to decide exactly how much she was willing to lose.
