Chapter 7: Angela’s Final Message
Marcus’s hands shook as he unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Angela.
The woman who had once filled every empty space in his life.
He took a deep breath.
Then he began reading.
“Marcus,
If you are reading this, then somehow life has finally brought you back to us.””
His throat tightened.
Emily watched his face.
Every emotion passed through him.
Pain.
Regret.
Love.
“I don’t know how many years have passed since you last saw me. I don’t know what you believe happened. But I need you to know one thing.””
Marcus stopped.
He couldn’t continue.
Emily quietly said:
“Keep going.””
He nodded.
“‘I never stopped loving you.’”
The words broke something inside him.
He covered his mouth for a moment.
Then continued.
“‘The day you disappeared from my life was the hardest day I ever lived through. But I refused to let Emily grow up believing her father didn’t love her.’”
Emily looked down.
Tears fell silently.
“‘I told her about you. I told her about your kindness. Your laugh.
The way you always wanted to help people. I wanted her to know the man I knew, not the man others tried to turn you into.’”
Marcus looked toward Claire.
The message was not angry.
That somehow made it worse.
Angela had known.
She had known someone interfered.
But she never poisoned Emily against him.
“‘If you meet our daughter someday, please don’t let guilt stop you from loving her. She doesn’t need a perfect father. She needs the father who was always meant to be there.’”
Marcus lowered the letter.
He couldn’t read anymore.
Emily reached for the paper.
Not to take it.
Just to steady his hands.
A small gesture.
But Marcus felt it.
The first moment of connection.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Emily looked at him.
“For what?””
“For missing everything.””
Her expression softened slightly.
“You missed my first steps.””
Marcus looked down.
“You missed my graduation.””
His eyes closed.
“You missed every birthday.””
Each sentence hurt.
But Emily wasn’t saying it to punish him.
She was saying it because it was the truth.
“And I missed you too,” she whispered.
Marcus looked up.
That sentence mattered more than anything.
Because beneath the pain was something else.
A possibility.
A chance.
Claire stood near the doorway.
“I thought I was saving you.””
Everyone looked at her.
Claire’s voice cracked.
“I thought Angela would ruin your future.””
Marcus stared.
“You destroyed my past.””
She began crying.
“I was young.””
“So was she.””
Claire looked at Emily.
“And I never expected you would find him.””
Emily looked back.
“That’s because you thought I didn’t deserve to.””
The accusation hit harder than anger.
Because Claire knew there was truth in it.
For years, she had convinced herself she was protecting Marcus.
But deep down, she had been protecting herself.
Marcus folded the letter carefully.
Then looked at Emily.
“There is something I need to ask.””
She waited.
“Would you let me try?””
Emily frowned.
“Try what?””
“Being your father.””
The question hung in the room.
Emily had dreamed about this moment.
But dreams were always easier than reality.
She looked at the man in front of her.
A stranger carrying her mother’s memories.
A stranger who shared her blood.
A stranger who had hurt her without knowing.
“I don’t know how to do this,” she admitted.
Marcus nodded.
“Neither do I.””
A small, sad smile appeared on his face.
“But maybe we can learn.””
For the first time that night, Emily smiled.
Only slightly.
But it was real.
And Marcus realized something.

He had spent years searching for success.
But the greatest thing he had ever lost was standing right in front of him.
