Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Silence

Marcus left the photograph on the table.

He couldn’t let go of it.

Every detail felt like a memory attacking him.

Angela’s smile.

The yellow blanket.

The promise he once made.

A promise he failed to keep.

“I need to understand,” Marcus said quietly.

Emily nodded.

“I do too.””

The woman in red stepped forward.

“Marcus, this girl is manipulating you.””

Emily looked at her.

The pain on her face was replaced by confusion.

“Why would I need to manipulate him?””

The woman opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus noticed.

He noticed everything now.

The fear.

The panic.

The desperation.

“You knew about this,” he said.

The woman’s face changed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Yes, you do.””

His voice became colder.

“You knew Angela.””

Silence.

Emily looked between them.

“You knew my mother?””

The woman looked away.

That small movement was enough.

Emily’s eyes widened.

“You knew.””

The woman’s confidence disappeared.

Marcus slowly sat down.

For years, he had believed one story.

Angela left.

Angela disappeared.

Angela wanted nothing to do with him.

But now, standing in front of him was the daughter he never knew.

And someone else had been holding pieces of the truth.

“Tell me what happened,” Marcus said.

Emily took a deep breath.

“My mother always told me my father wasn’t a bad person.””

Marcus looked up.

“She said you were young. Confused. And that someone made sure you never found us.””

The words cut deeper than he expected.

“Who?””

Emily looked at the woman in red.

The woman immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“What did you do?””

“I protected you.””

“From what?””

The woman swallowed.

“From making a mistake.””

Emily laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You don’t get to decide who someone’s family is.””

The restaurant guests remained silent.

Nobody cared about their expensive meals anymore.

They were watching a family secret unfold in front of them.

Marcus looked at Emily.

“I need to ask you something.””

She nodded.

“Your birthday.””

Emily answered.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The date matched.

Everything matched.

The impossible truth became real.

“You’re my daughter.””

The words came out barely above a whisper.

Emily’s lips trembled.

She had imagined hearing those words thousands of times.

But she never imagined they would hurt this much.

Because the person saying them was a stranger.

A stranger who was supposed to have been there her entire life.

“I waited a long time to hear that,” Emily said.

Marcus looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily shook her head.

May you like

“Sorry doesn’t explain twenty-two years.””

And for the first time, Marcus had no defense.
