Chapter 4: The Woman Who Hid the Truth

The woman in red slowly stepped backward.

She looked around the restaurant.

At the people watching.

At Marcus.

At Emily.

Her carefully controlled world was collapsing.

Marcus stood.

“Tell me everything.””

The woman’s face hardened.

“You don’t want to know.””

“Yes, I do.””

“You’ll hate me.””

Marcus looked at Emily.

Then back at her.

“You already let me lose my daughter.””

The woman looked down.

Her silence was an answer.

Emily hugged herself.

She had spent years wondering why her father never came.

Why her mother cried alone.

Why every question about him ended with sadness.

Now she was standing in front of the person who knew.

And the truth was worse than she imagined.

“I told Angela to leave,” the woman finally admitted.

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because you were about to marry me.””

Emily’s face changed.

The pieces began connecting.

“You were the reason?””

The woman looked ashamed for the first time.

“I thought I was protecting my future.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You destroyed mine.””

“I loved you.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You loved having control.””

The woman began crying.

But Emily couldn’t feel sympathy yet.

Not after everything.

“My mother spent her whole life wondering why you never came.””

Marcus looked at Emily.

“And I spent mine believing she abandoned me.””

The room felt heavier.

Three people.

Three different lives.

All damaged by one decision.

Emily looked at the photograph again.

The baby in the yellow blanket.

Her.

A child who had spent years searching for a missing piece.

Marcus reached toward her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if afraid she would disappear.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

Emily looked at his hand.

Then at his face.

“I don’t know if I can.””

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.””

But before either of them could say more, the woman in red suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Both turned.

Her face had gone pale.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“What else?””

The woman looked at Marcus.

Then at Emily.

“There was a letter.””

Marcus frowned.

“What letter?””

“The last letter Angela wrote.””

Emily froze.

“My mother wrote you a letter?””

May you like

The woman nodded.

“And you never saw it.””
