Chapter 9: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Monique reached for the blue envelope.
Damon moved first.
He grabbed it from the metal box and stepped away from the desk.
"You're not reading this.""
Monique stared at him.
"It's addressed to me.""
"It's private.""
"My mother's letter is private?""
"You don't know what's inside.""
"Then let me find out.""
Damon held the envelope behind his back.
Sarah stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter, please put the document on the desk.""
He looked at her.
"You can't take it.""
"We're not asking to take it. We're asking you not to destroy or conceal potentially relevant evidence.""
Damon hesitated.
Bianca raised her phone.
"I've already photographed the envelope.""
He looked at her in disbelief.
"You've been recording everything?""
"I've been documenting what I found.""
He slowly placed the envelope on the desk.
Monique reached for it.
Her fingers shook as she opened the flap.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed her mother sitting in a hospital garden, wearing a pale blue cardigan.
She looked tired but happy.
On the back was a date.
Three weeks before her death.
Monique unfolded the letter.
My darling Monique,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I was unable to prevent. I hope I'm wrong about that. I hope you and your little family are happy, and that Damon has learned to trust you.
Monique stopped.
She had to take a breath.
Then she continued.
*I need you to know that I never signed away your rights as a mother. I would never do that. I know you.
I have watched you care for people your entire life. I have watched you give everything you have to the people you love.*
When Damon asked me to sign an emergency contact form, I agreed because I believed it would only be used if you were medically unable to make decisions.
But he brought another document later. It was different. It named Evelyn as a permanent alternative guardian. I refused to sign it.
Monique's tears fell onto the paper.
She continued reading.
I told him that if he ever used my name to keep you away from your child, I would make sure you knew the truth.
There is something else I need you to understand. During one of my visits to the hospital, I heard Evelyn speaking with a doctor about a test that had not yet been completed. They were discussing the possibility of a genetic condition, but nobody had a confirmed result.
Please don't let anyone use uncertainty to make decisions about your child without you.
You are his mother.
Nothing changes that.
With all my love,
Mom.
Monique lowered the letter.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered, "She knew.""
Bianca sat beside her.
"She knew he was doing this?""
Monique nodded.
"She tried to warn me.""
Damon stared at the desk.
Sarah carefully took the letter and photographed each page.
"Do you know where the original medical records are stored?""
Monique shook her head.
"But Evelyn does," Damon said quietly.
Everyone turned toward him.
He sat down.
"My mother kept a separate copy of the hospital file.""
"Why?"" Bianca asked.
"Because she didn't trust the hospital administration.""
Monique looked at him.
"Your mother knew the first test hadn't been processed.""
"Yes.""
"And she knew my mother had refused to sign the guardianship document.""
Damon nodded.
Sarah placed the letter in a protective sleeve.
"Then we need to speak with Evelyn directly.""
Damon looked at his phone.
"She won't talk to you.""
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
"Why?""
"Because she knows how much trouble this could cause.""
Bianca stood.
"Then maybe it's time she stopped hiding.""
She called Evelyn.
The phone rang six times.
Finally, an older woman's voice answered.
"Bianca?""
"Mrs. Carter, we found the letter.""
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered, "Which letter?""
"The one from Monique's mother.""
A long pause followed.
"Where is Damon?""
"Right here.""
Evelyn sighed.
"I told him not to let you find it.""
Monique took the phone.
"Hello, Evelyn.""
The older woman went quiet.
"Monique.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I wanted to.""
"But you didn't.""
"I was afraid.""
Monique closed her eyes.
"Afraid of what?""
"Of my son.""
Damon stood abruptly.
"Mother, don't.""
Evelyn continued.
"He told me that if I interfered, he would make sure I never saw Micah again.""
Monique's hand tightened around the phone.
"You knew I was being kept away from him?""
"I knew Damon had told you to leave. I knew he was using the paperwork to keep you from contacting the school.""
"And you did nothing?""
Evelyn began to cry.
"I thought he would eventually calm down. I thought he would let you see Micah once things settled.""
"Things settled for him. Not for me.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Monique looked at the letter.
"My mother trusted you to help protect her grandson.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you let Damon use her name?""
Evelyn was silent.
Finally, she said, "Because I signed the second document.""
Damon closed his eyes.
Bianca stared at him.
Monique felt the room disappear.
"You signed it?""
"Yes.""
"Even though my mother refused?""
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"I believed Damon when he told me you were medically unfit to care for Micah.""
Monique shook her head.
"I was recovering from childbirth.""
"He said you had suffered a serious episode.""
"That wasn't true.""
"I understand that now.""
Sarah stepped closer to the phone.
"Mrs. Carter, this is Sarah Mitchell, legal counsel. We need to establish what documents you signed and whether any of them were submitted to a court or government office.""
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
"I have the original blue folder.""
"Where?""
"At my house.""
"Can you preserve it?""
"Yes.""
Then Evelyn said something that made Damon look up sharply.
"There's also a letter from the hospital administrator.""
Sarah leaned closer.
"What does it say?""
"It explains why the genetic test was never completed.""
Monique's heart began pounding.
"Why?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"Because the sample was deliberately withdrawn.""
Damon stepped forward.
"Mother, stop talking.""
But Evelyn continued.
"The doctor who ordered the test wanted both parents informed. Damon refused. He told the hospital he was withdrawing consent.""
Monique stared at Damon.
"You stopped the test?""
"I was protecting my family.""
"From what?""
He didn't answer.
Evelyn began crying again.
"There's something else. The doctor wrote that the sample should have been retained for a second opinion. But it disappeared from the records.""
Sarah's expression hardened.
"Do you have proof?""
"Yes. The original correspondence.""
"Then please don't send it to anyone until we arrange a proper transfer.""
Evelyn agreed.
Before ending the call, she spoke directly to Monique.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
Monique closed her eyes.
"What now?""
"Your mother didn't just leave you a letter. She left something else. A sealed document that was supposed to be delivered to you after Micah was born.""
"Where is it?""
"In the blue folder.""
Damon suddenly lunged for the phone.
The call disconnected.
Bianca stepped between him and Monique.
"Don't.""
He looked at her.
"Stay out of this.""
"No.""
His voice rose.
"You're destroying everything!""
Bianca shook her head.
"No, Damon. We're finally looking at what you destroyed.""
Sarah gathered the documents.
"We're going to preserve all of this. And I strongly recommend that nobody contacts the hospital or attempts to alter any records before legal counsel is involved.""
Monique looked at the photograph of her mother.
For the first time, she felt something other than grief.
She felt that her mother had reached across the years to protect her.
But the truth about Micah's birth was still incomplete.
And there was one question nobody had answered.
Why had Damon been so determined to stop the genetic test?
That evening, Sarah received a call from a hospital records supervisor.
She put the phone on speaker.
"Ms. Mitchell, we located the archived neonatal file.""
Monique gripped the edge of the desk.
"Is the original test there?""
"No. But there is a note attached to the file.""
"What does it say?""
The supervisor paused.
"It says the original sample was withdrawn at the father's request. However, we also found a separate laboratory report that was never attached to the main record.""
Sarah sat upright.
"Can you tell us what it contains?""
The woman hesitated.
"Yes. It is a preliminary result from a different test.""
Monique stopped breathing.
The supervisor continued.
"It identifies a possible discrepancy in the recorded biological relationship between the child and the named father.""
Damon lowered his head.
Bianca stared at him.
Then the supervisor added:
"There's also a second patient's name listed in the report. We believe that person may be connected to the original sample.""
Monique whispered, "Who?""
The woman read the name.
And Bianca immediately dropped the pen in her hand.
May you like
It was her own name.
*Bianca Hayes.*
