Chapter 4: What Happened the Night Micah Was Born

“Because she knows what really happened the night Micah was born.””

Damon's words hung over the cafeteria.

Monique tightened her arms around her son.

Bianca looked from him to Damon.

"What does that mean?""

Damon straightened his jacket, trying to recover the authority he had lost.

"It means Monique has always been good at twisting things. She knows how to make herself look like the victim.""

Monique let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

"You're still doing it.""

"Doing what?""

"Changing the subject whenever someone asks you a question.""

Mrs. Ellis closed her folder.

"Perhaps this conversation should happen somewhere more private.""

"No," Bianca said.

"I'm tired of private conversations. Every time something happens, Damon tells me there's another explanation. I'm beginning to think the explanations are the problem.""

A few parents quietly moved their children toward the other side of the cafeteria.

Damon noticed.

"Bianca, we're leaving.""

She didn't move.

"Not until you tell me what happened.""

He looked at Monique.

"Tell her, then. Tell her what you did.""

Monique's face went pale.

For a moment, she seemed to forget the people around her.

Then she looked down at Micah.

"Sweetheart, Mrs. Ellis is going to take you to the art table for a few minutes. There's a box of crayons there. Would you like to draw something?""

Micah shook his head.

"I want to stay with you.""

"I know, baby. I just need to talk to the grown-ups.""

He held her hand.

"Promise you won't leave?""

Monique kissed his forehead.

"I promise.""

Mrs. Ellis crouched beside him.

"Come with me, Micah. We can sit right where your mommy can see you.""

After a moment, he agreed.

As he walked away, he looked back three times.

Monique watched until he reached the art table.

Then she turned toward Damon.

"Micah was born six weeks early.""

Bianca nodded slowly.

"I know. You told me he had complications.""

"He did. He was in the neonatal intensive care unit for nineteen days.""

Monique's voice trembled.

"I barely got to hold him during the first week. Every time a nurse brought him to me, I was afraid something would happen.""

She remembered the hospital room.

The smell of disinfectant.

The fluorescent lights.

The tiny hand that had wrapped around her finger.

And Damon, standing beside the incubator with his phone pressed against his ear.

"He told me the doctors were worried about me," Monique continued.

"He said I needed to rest. He said he would handle the paperwork.""

Bianca frowned.

"What paperwork?""

"The birth registration. The insurance forms. The hospital discharge documents.""

Monique looked directly at Damon.

"He also told me there was a problem with the medical bills.""

Damon crossed his arms.

"That's not relevant.""

"It became relevant when I discovered that you had changed the address on the hospital records.""

Bianca looked at him.

"Why?""

Damon exhaled sharply.

"Because we were moving.""

"We weren't moving," Monique replied.

"You were preparing to move money.""

The cafeteria fell quiet again.

Bianca's expression changed.

"What money?""

Monique reached into the pocket of her apron.

She took out a folded photocopy, worn along the creases.

"I found this in a box of old documents after I left.""

She handed it to Bianca.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

The date was nineteen days after Micah's birth.

The amount was $86,400.

The sender's account belonged to a company Monique didn't recognize.

The receiving account was in Damon's name.

Bianca read the document twice.

"What's this?""

Damon stepped closer.

"Give me that.""

Bianca held it away from him.

"Why did you receive almost ninety thousand dollars three weeks after your son was born?""

"Business transaction.""

"From whom?""

"Someone you don't know.""

Monique shook her head.

"It came from the insurance settlement.""

Damon's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful.""

But Monique continued.

"When Micah was born, the hospital made an administrative error. They recorded him under the wrong insurance category. I spent weeks trying to correct it. Damon told me the hospital had forgiven part of the bill.""

She pointed to the document.

"But they hadn't forgiven anything. The insurance company had issued a reimbursement.""

Bianca looked at the amount again.

"Was this money supposed to pay for Micah's medical expenses?""

"It was supposed to cover the bills and the emergency costs," Monique said.

"I never saw a cent.""

Damon gave a bitter laugh.

"You're making accusations based on a piece of paper you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

"I don't owe you an explanation.""

Bianca stepped between them.

"You owe me one.""

Damon looked at her.

"Bianca, this has nothing to do with you.""

She lowered her voice.

"That money came from an account connected to a company I invested in last year.""

Damon went silent.

Monique stared at her.

"What?""

Bianca looked at the document again.

"That company was dissolved before I met you.""

Damon's face tightened.

"You're confused.""

"No, Damon. I'm remembering.""

She pulled her phone from her handbag.

"I kept the investment statements. I have every transaction.""

Damon reached for her arm.

"Put your phone away.""

Bianca stepped back.

"Don't touch me.""

Monique watched the exchange.

For the first time, she understood why Damon had looked so frightened when she mentioned the recording.

The money wasn't the only thing he had hidden.

Bianca opened an email attachment.

Then her expression drained.

"Oh my God.""

Damon took another step toward her.

"Bianca.""

She turned the screen toward him.

The document showed a transfer from the dissolved company to a personal account.

The beneficiary's name was not Damon Carter.

It was Bianca's.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

But she had never signed it.

She looked up slowly.

"Did you use my name?""

May you like

Damon didn't answer.

And Monique realized the secret from Micah's birth had just opened a door neither woman had known existed.
