Chapter 8: The Signature of a Dead Woman

Monique sat down slowly.

"My mother was dead before Micah was born.""

Damon said nothing.

"She died when I was twenty-eight. You attended her funeral.""

"I know.""

"Then explain how her signature is on a hospital document.""

Bianca looked between them.

"Maybe it's another forged document.""

Damon shook his head.

"Not this one.""

Monique stood again.

"Show me.""

Damon walked to the metal box beneath his desk.

He opened it with a small key attached to his key ring.

Inside were several envelopes, a hospital bracelet, and an old photograph.

He removed a folded document.

Monique recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.

The letters were slightly slanted.

Her mother had always written her name with a long, looping final stroke.

The signature looked authentic.

But the date beside it was impossible.

It was dated six months after her mother's death.

Monique looked up.

"Who signed this?""

Damon hesitated.

"Your mother had signed a blank authorization before she died.""

Monique shook her head.

"She never signed blank papers.""

"She did.""

"Why?""

Damon looked uncomfortable.

"She wanted to make sure you were protected.""

Monique laughed in disbelief.

"Protected from what?""

"She knew you had health complications during pregnancy.""

"That doesn't give you permission to invent her signature.""

He slid the paper across the desk.

The document was titled Emergency Family Authorization.

It permitted the hospital to contact an alternate family representative if the biological parents were unable to make medical decisions.

The representative listed was Evelyn Carter.

Monique studied the page.

Then she noticed something.

Her mother's signature was on the first line.

But the witness signature belonged to a person she knew.

*Damon Carter.*

She looked at him.

"You witnessed this?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Before your mother died.""

"Then why is the document dated after her death?""

He rubbed his face.

"That was an administrative mistake.""

Bianca shook her head.

"An administrative mistake that conveniently made Evelyn the person authorized to make decisions about Micah?""

Damon glared at her.

"You don't understand how complicated the situation was.""

Bianca stepped closer.

"Then explain it to someone who isn't afraid of you.""

Damon sat down.

For a moment, he looked older than he had that morning.

"My mother always believed Monique wasn't strong enough to raise a child.""

Monique's expression hardened.

"What?""

"She thought you were too emotional. Too dependent. She said you needed someone more stable.""

"My mother loved me.""

"She also worried about you.""

Monique remembered her mother's final months.

The hospital visits.

The afternoon conversations.

The way she had held Monique's hand and told her that she would be a wonderful mother someday.

Her mother had never questioned her ability to love a child.

Damon continued.

"When you became pregnant, my mother started asking questions about your medical history. She believed Micah could inherit certain complications.""

"She was a nurse," Monique replied.

"She knew how to ask questions. She also knew the difference between concern and taking someone's child.""

"She wanted an emergency arrangement.""

"And you turned it into a permanent plan.""

Damon looked down.

Bianca opened the metal box again.

There was another envelope inside.

It was addressed to Damon in Evelyn's handwriting.

She opened it carefully.

The letter was short.

*Damon, I have done what you asked. I signed the papers your lawyer prepared. But I want you to understand that this is not what Monique's mother intended.

She wanted Monique to be informed. I hope you will reconsider before this goes any further.*

Bianca read the final sentence twice.

Then she looked at Damon.

"Your mother knew.""

He reached for the letter.

"Give me that.""

Bianca held it away.

"She knew the document had been changed.""

Monique took the paper.

Her fingers trembled.

"Why would Evelyn sign something she knew my mother hadn't authorized?""

Damon stood.

"Because she believed she was protecting Micah.""

"From me?""

"From the situation.""

Monique shook her head.

"Every time you use that word, another lie comes out.""

The doorbell rang again.

Bianca walked into the hallway.

Rachel, her attorney, stood outside with a leather briefcase.

Behind her was a second woman carrying a small document case.

"This is Sarah Mitchell," Rachel said.

"She handles family law and emergency custody matters.""

Sarah looked at Monique.

"Are you Micah's biological mother?""

"Yes.""

"Do you have documentation?""

Monique handed her the old photograph, the hospital papers, and the eleven letters.

Sarah examined them carefully.

"Do you have the original recording?""

Monique nodded.

"On my phone.""

"Please preserve it. Don't edit it, forward it, or delete the original message. We'll discuss how to authenticate it.""

She turned toward Damon.

"Mr. Carter, I'm advising you not to remove any documents from this room.""

Damon laughed.

"You're not in a position to advise me.""

Rachel placed a second folder on the desk.

"Actually, we may have a few questions about the financial documents too.""

Bianca stood beside her.

"I want an independent review of every account associated with my name.""

Rachel nodded.

"That's already in progress.""

Monique looked at Sarah.

"What about my son?""

Sarah's expression softened.

"We need to establish the current custody arrangement and obtain the complete records. But the documents you've shown me raise serious questions about how contact was restricted.""

Damon interrupted.

"Micah lives with me. That's the end of it.""

Sarah looked directly at him.

"That is not the end of it.""

She took a photograph of the hospital authorization.

Then she examined the old laboratory report.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the hospital file," Bianca replied.

Sarah looked at the date.

"Was this the only genetic test?""

Damon didn't answer.

Sarah repeated the question.

"Was there another test?""

He looked toward the metal box.

Finally, he nodded.

"There was a second one.""

Monique stepped closer.

"Where is it?""

Damon swallowed.

"Evelyn has it.""

Bianca picked up her phone.

"Then we're calling her.""

Damon shook his head.

"Don't.""

Rachel looked at him.

"Why not?""

"Because she doesn't know the full situation.""

Monique felt a chill.

"Then what does she know?""

Damon sat down heavily.

He looked at the old hospital bracelet inside the metal box.

Then he said:

"The second test was ordered because the first doctor believed Micah might not be biologically related to me.""

Nobody moved.

Bianca's hand fell to her side.

Monique stared at him.

"What?""

Damon closed his eyes.

"I didn't tell you because I wasn't sure.""

Monique's voice became barely audible.

"Are you saying you questioned whether Micah was your son?""

Damon nodded.

Sarah immediately raised her hand.

"Let's be very clear. A suspicion is not a medical result. We need the original laboratory records.""

Bianca looked at Damon.

"And did the second test confirm anything?""

He opened his eyes.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because the sample was never processed.""

Monique stepped backward.

All those years.

All those explanations.

All those documents.

And he had used an unconfirmed suspicion to justify removing her from her son's life.

Sarah closed her briefcase.

"We need that original file.""

Damon looked at the women.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

It was from Evelyn.

I know what you've told them. Do not let Monique see the blue envelope.

Monique read it over his shoulder.

She looked at the metal box.

There was one envelope left.

Blue.

Her name was written across it.

May you like

And beneath her name were four words:

*FROM YOUR MOTHER. READ ALONE.*
