Chapter 3: The Woman Who Kept Every Message
Mrs. Ellis stepped into the open space between the display tables.
She was in her early sixties, with silver hair pulled into a neat bun and reading glasses hanging from a chain around her neck.
She had taught Micah's preschool class before he transferred.
And she remembered exactly what Damon had said about his mother.
"Mrs. Ellis," Damon said, forcing a smile.
"This is a family matter.""
"Then perhaps you should have kept your family together.""
A few parents looked at each other.
Bianca turned toward the teacher.
"Do you know Monique?""
Mrs. Ellis nodded.
"I taught Micah when he was three. I also remember how many times he asked for his mother.""
Damon stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
"No," Mrs. Ellis replied.
"It isn't.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were several sheets of paper, children's drawings, and copies of school communication records.
"I have something you should see.""
Damon looked at the folder.
"Whatever she told you, you don't know the full story.""
Mrs. Ellis raised an eyebrow.
"You're right. I only know what I witnessed.""
She removed a drawing.
It showed a little boy standing between two houses. One house was blue, the other yellow. A woman stood near the blue house, with her arms stretched out.
In the corner, Micah had written his name.
Mrs. Ellis handed it to Bianca.
"This was from our family drawing exercise last year.""
Bianca looked at it.
"What's the date?""
"April twelfth.""
Damon's face tightened.
Mrs. Ellis continued.
"Micah told me that his mother lived somewhere else. He said his father told him she had chosen not to be with him.""
Bianca looked at Damon.
"You said she left months before you met me.""
Damon adjusted his cuff.
"Bianca, this is being taken out of context.""
Mrs. Ellis took another paper from the folder.
"Then let's talk about the context.""
She showed Bianca a printed school email.
It was a message from Damon to the school administration, requesting that Monique be removed from the authorized pickup list and that staff not release information about Micah's schedule to her.
The date was three days after the night Monique had been forced out.
Bianca read it twice.
"Why did you tell me she never tried to contact him?""
Damon's voice dropped.
"Because I didn't want you dragged into a situation you couldn't understand.""
Bianca stared at him.
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Monique shifted Micah in her arms.
Her son had stopped crying, but he still held the front of her uniform in one small fist.
Mrs. Ellis turned toward her.
"Monique, may I?""
Monique nodded.
The teacher gently took the folder back.
"I also kept copies of the messages you sent the school.""
Damon's head turned.
"What messages?""
Mrs. Ellis looked at him.
"The ones asking whether Micah was well. The ones asking for a supervised visit. The ones asking whether you could send him his birthday present.""
Bianca slowly turned toward Damon.
"Birthday present?""
Monique looked down.
Her voice was quiet.
"I sent him a dinosaur backpack for his fifth birthday. It came back unopened.""
Micah lifted his head.
"Was that the green one?""
Monique's lips parted.
She nodded.
"Yes, baby.""
"I saw it in Daddy's closet.""
The room went still.
Damon looked down at his son.
"Micah, that's enough.""
But Micah continued.
"There was a blue dinosaur on it. I wanted it.""
Monique kissed his forehead.
"I know.""
Bianca's face had lost all its color.
"You kept his mother's gift?""
Damon rubbed his jaw.
"It was inappropriate for him to receive things from someone who had agreed to stay away.""
"Agreed?"" Bianca repeated.
"You told me she didn't want him.""
"I said we had a difficult separation.""
"No. You said she walked out.""
Damon looked around the room.
Several parents were openly watching now.
He straightened his shoulders.
"This is ridiculous. Monique knows what she signed.""
Monique finally spoke.
"I signed nothing that gave you permission to erase me.""
Damon pointed toward her.
"You accepted the money.""
"The money you gave me after making me leave?""
"The money that kept you housed.""
Monique's expression changed.
"I worked for every dollar after that night. I cleaned offices until my hands cracked. I washed dishes with a fever. I slept in a room above a laundromat because I couldn't afford anything else.""
She looked at Micah.
"And every night, I wondered whether my little boy was sleeping with his blanket.""
Micah touched her cheek.
"I still have it.""
Monique closed her eyes.
"Your dinosaur blanket?""
He nodded.
"Daddy said you gave it to me.""
A painful silence followed.
Bianca looked at Damon.
"Is that true?""
Damon said nothing.
Mrs. Ellis closed the folder.
"There's something else.""
She reached into the back pocket and removed a small sealed envelope.
The front had Micah's name written in Monique's handwriting.
"I found this in the school's returned correspondence file," she explained.
"It was sent here months ago. It was addressed to Micah, care of his father.""
Monique stared at it.
"I thought it had been lost.""
Mrs. Ellis held it out.
"Would you like to give it to him?""
Monique looked at her son.
"Only if you want it, sweetheart.""
Micah nodded immediately.
"Yes.""
She carefully handed him the envelope.
His small fingers struggled with the flap.
Bianca crouched beside him.
"Would you like some help?""
Micah looked at her, then at Monique.
Monique nodded.
"That's okay, baby.""
Bianca gently opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Monique holding Micah as a newborn.
On the back, there was a handwritten message.
My sweet Micah, if you ever wonder whether I loved you, look at this picture. You were the first person I ever held who made me feel that my heart could live outside my body. I am always your mother. I have never stopped waiting for you.
Micah traced the photograph with one finger.
"That's me?""
Monique smiled through her tears.
"Yes, baby.""
"And that's you?""
"Always.""
He pressed the photograph against his chest.
Then he looked at Damon.
"Why did you say Mommy didn't want me?""
Damon opened his mouth.
No words came out.
Bianca slowly stood.
She was still holding the corner of the photograph, and her eyes had filled with tears.
"Damon," she said, "I need you to tell me the truth.""
He reached for her hand.
"Not here.""
She pulled away.
"No. You don't get to decide when I hear the truth.""
For the first time, Damon looked genuinely cornered.
He glanced toward the exit.
Then toward Monique's phone.
The old voice recording was still open.
Monique hadn't pressed play.
But she was no longer the only person holding evidence.
Mrs. Ellis had the school records.
Bianca had the photograph.
And Micah had finally heard his mother's voice again.
Damon took a deep breath.
"Fine. You want the truth?""
He turned toward Bianca.
"Monique wasn't supposed to come back. I paid her to stay away because—"
He stopped.
Bianca stared at him.
"Because what?""
Damon looked at Monique.
His expression hardened again.
"Because she knows what really happened the night Micah was born.""
Monique went completely still.
The photograph slipped slightly in Micah's hands.
Bianca whispered, "What happened?""
Monique looked at her son.
Then she looked at Damon.
May you like
And for the first time in nearly a year, she realized the lie about her leaving had never been the whole story.
It had only been the beginning.
