Chapter 4: The Secret He Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because Daniel’s affair shocked me.

It did.

But the human heart has a strange way of protecting itself.

Sometimes the first betrayal hurts less than the truth that comes afterward.

I sat in the living room until sunrise, watching the sky slowly turn from black to gray.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

For years, I had thought silence meant peace.

That morning, I realized silence could also mean something was missing.

Trust.

When Daniel finally came downstairs, he looked exhausted.

Not heartbroken.

Not ashamed.

Exhausted.

Like someone who had spent the night trying to solve a problem.

Not apologize.

Solve.

“Claire,” he said softly.

I didn’t look up from my coffee.

“Yes?””

“We need to talk.””

I almost smiled.

That sentence always came after something was already broken.

“About what?””

He sat across from me.

“About last night.””

“No.””

He frowned.

“No?””

“We’re not talking about last night.””

“Then what are we talking about?””

“The truth.””

His face tightened.

“I told you the truth.””

I looked at him.

“No. You told me the part you were forced to admit.””

The silence returned.

Daniel looked away.

That small movement confirmed what I already suspected.

There was more.

“There’s something else,” I said.

His head lifted.

“What makes you say that?””

“Because you weren’t scared when Vanessa left.””

He said nothing.

“You were scared when your phone buzzed.””

Daniel leaned back.

“Claire…”

“Who was it?””

“It doesn’t matter.””

I stood up.

“That answer tells me it matters.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stopped.

People always used that sentence when they were about to explain why they had hidden something.

“Protect me from what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he sighed.

“There’s a financial issue.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of issue?””

“It’s complicated.””

“Everything with you is complicated.””

He looked frustrated.

“I made some decisions.””

“What decisions?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was louder than words.

“I invested some money.””

“How much?””

“Claire…”

“How much?””

He looked down.

“Almost everything from the account.””

My stomach dropped.

“What account?””

He didn’t respond.

And suddenly, I understood.

The account.

The one we created after we bought our first house.

The one we promised would be for emergencies.

The one I contributed to every month.

“You used our savings?””

“I was going to replace it.””

“When?””

“When things worked out.””

I stared at him.

“What things?””

He had no answer.

Because there was no answer.

There was only hope.

And hope was what people used when they didn’t want to admit they had taken a risk with someone else’s life.

“How much is left?””

Daniel looked away.

“Daniel.””

“Almost nothing.””

The room spun slightly.

Not because of the money.

Because suddenly, every strange moment from the past year made sense.

The late nights.

The secretive phone calls.

The sudden trips.

The emotional distance.

It wasn’t just an affair.

He had been building another life while quietly damaging ours.

“Who knows about this?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

I narrowed my eyes.

“Who knows?””

Finally, he whispered.

“Marcus.””

My heart stopped for a second.

Marcus.

Daniel’s business partner.

The person who had always been around.

The person who always told me Daniel was “under pressure.””

The person who defended him whenever I questioned his behavior.

“You both knew?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

I laughed softly.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””

He looked at me.

“The affair?””

He looked down.

“The money?””

He stayed silent.

That was the answer.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, neighbors were leaving for work.

People were starting normal days.

But my entire life had shifted overnight.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

This time, I saw the name.

Marcus.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Hello?””

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean she found out?””

I turned around.

Daniel noticed.

His face went pale.

He lowered his voice.

“No. Claire doesn’t know everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

Everything.

Not everything?

What else was there?

Daniel stood up and walked toward the hallway.

But I heard Marcus’s voice faintly through the phone.

“Daniel, you need to understand something. If she finds the documents, we’re both finished.””

Documents.

My heart started beating faster.

Daniel ended the call.

Slowly.

Then he turned around.

And for the first time in twelve years, I saw something in my husband’s eyes that I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of me discovering the truth.

I took a step forward.

“What documents?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was when I knew.

The affair was only the beginning.

The woman who came to my door had tried to destroy my marriage.

But she had accidentally opened the door to something much bigger.

May you like

Something Daniel had spent years hiding.

And I was about to find out exactly what he had done.
