Chapter 1 - The Woman They Wanted to Blame

The stroller hit the swimming pool with a splash that shattered the quiet afternoon.

Lena Brooks was carrying a basket of clean towels through the kitchen when she heard it.

For half a second, she thought someone had dropped a chair into the water.

Then she looked through the glass patio doors.

A white stroller was tipping beneath the surface.

And inside it was three-month-old Emma Whitfield.

“EMMA!”

The towels scattered across the floor.

Lena ran barefoot onto the patio, her heart pounding so violently she could barely breathe.

At the far end of the pool stood Celeste Whitfield, Emma's mother.

She wore an expensive cream-colored dress and dark sunglasses. One hand rested against the stone wall, and her expression was strangely empty.

Lena didn't stop to question her.

She jumped.

The cold water swallowed her.

The stroller was sinking sideways. Emma's tiny arms moved beneath the surface, trapped by the safety harness.

Lena grabbed the frame, fought against its weight, and reached for the buckle.

Her fingers slipped.

She tried again.

The buckle released.

Lena pulled Emma against her chest and kicked toward the surface.

When her head broke through the water, she gasped for air.

Emma wasn't crying yet.

That terrified her more than anything.

“Come on, baby. Come on.”

Lena struggled to the pool steps, lifting Emma's face above the water as she climbed.

She laid the infant across her arm and checked her breathing.

Emma coughed.

Then came a thin, desperate cry.

Lena nearly collapsed with relief.

“That's it, sweetheart. Cry for me. I'm here.”

She wrapped Emma in a towel from a nearby chair, held her close, and reached toward the emergency phone mounted beside the patio door.

Behind her, Celeste finally spoke.

“What have you done?”

Lena turned.

For one stunned moment, she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

“What have I done?”

Celeste stepped forward.

“You almost killed my daughter.”

Lena stared at her.

“I SAW YOU!”

Celeste stopped.

“You pushed the stroller!”

A man's voice thundered from the house.

“What the hell is going on?”

Adrian Whitfield rushed through the patio doors.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a tailored navy suit, he looked every inch the successful Atlanta property developer whose photograph appeared in local business magazines.

Lena turned toward him.

“Mr. Whitfield! Your wife pushed Emma into the pool! We need an ambulance!”

Adrian's eyes flicked toward Celeste.

Something passed between them.

Then he lunged forward and snatched Emma from Lena's arms, keeping the towel around her.

“Get away from my daughter!”

Lena staggered.

“Sir, please listen—”

“YOU COULD HAVE KILLED HER!”

Lena's mouth fell open.

Emma continued crying against her father's chest.

Adrian turned toward the driveway.

“OFFICERS!”

Two police officers came through the side gate.

Lena stared in disbelief.

She hadn't even heard a siren.

Adrian pointed directly at her.

“That's her! That's the woman who tried to drown my baby!”

“No!” Lena screamed.

The officers approached.

One ordered her to turn around.

Lena backed away.

“I saved her! Please, somebody listen to me!”

“Ma'am, put your hands behind your back.”

Her wrists were seized.

Metal handcuffs clicked shut.

Water dripped from her soaked uniform onto the expensive stone patio.

Behind the officers, Celeste moved closer to her husband.

Her lips curled into a small, satisfied smile.

Lena saw it.

And suddenly, a terrible thought entered her mind.

This wasn't just a lie.

It had been arranged.

“Check the cameras!” she cried. “There are cameras all over this house!”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“The pool camera hasn't worked in months.”

Lena looked at him.

How could he be so certain?

Before she could speak, footsteps pounded through the house.

A boy appeared in the patio doorway.

Ten-year-old Jordan Whitfield.

Emma's older brother.

He was barefoot, wearing dinosaur pajamas, and clutching a black tablet against his chest.

His eyes were filled with tears.

“DAD!”

Adrian turned sharply.

“Jordan, go back inside.”

The boy shook his head.

“DON'T LET HER HURT MISS LENA!”

Celeste's smile vanished.

Jordan lifted the tablet.

“I SAW EVERYTHING!”

Adrian took one step toward him.

“Give me that.”

Jordan retreated.

“No!”

Then he looked directly at the officers.

“My dad's lying.”

The patio went silent.

Jordan's hands trembled as he unlocked the screen.

“I have the video.”

And for the first time since Emma fell into the water, Adrian Whitfield looked genuinely afraid.
