Chapter 5 - The Choice in Front of Everyone

The first dance was already twenty minutes late.

The bandleader had quietly dismissed the musicians for a break.

Servers stood beside untouched champagne glasses.

At the edge of the dance floor, Vivian's husband waited with his hands folded in front of him.

The wedding was no longer simply a celebration interrupted by an argument.

It had become a room full of people waiting for someone to tell the truth.

Nora looked at Daniel.

"I need you to answer one question."

He nodded.

"Did you give your mother four thousand dollars from our savings to pay for this wedding?"

His face lost color.

Evelyn moved forward.

"Daniel, don't you dare—"

"Mom."

He had never spoken to her in that tone before.

She stopped.

Daniel turned toward Nora.

"Yes."

Nora closed her eyes briefly.

There it was.

Not a suspicion.

Not another excuse.

The truth.

"Why did you lie to me?"

"Vivian was short on the final payments. Mom said the venue balance had to be settled immediately."

Vivian looked furious.

"You promised you wouldn't tell her!"

Daniel turned toward his sister.

"You told me Nora had agreed."

"I said she would understand."

"That's not what you said."

Nora watched them.

A family accustomed to keeping secrets was suddenly discovering how many versions of the same conversation could exist.

Daniel faced Nora again.

"I thought I could replace the money before you noticed."

"And when I did notice?"

He swallowed.

"I panicked."

She remembered the night she questioned the transfer.

How Daniel accused her of distrusting his family.

How he made her feel ashamed for asking about money they had saved together.

"You let me apologize to you," she said.

He didn't answer.

"You let me apologize for asking where our money went."

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

"Yes."

The admission hurt more than she expected.

Not because she hadn't suspected it.

Because some part of her had been waiting for him to prove she was wrong.

Maya stood close enough to support her if she became unsteady.

But Nora remained upright.

She looked toward Vivian.

"You thought I should pay for your wedding because I married your brother?"

Vivian's eyes filled with angry tears.

"You have a business. You have a house. Everything comes so easily to you."

Nora almost answered.

Then she remembered the nights she worked from their kitchen table while Daniel slept.

The weekends she missed because she was managing other people's celebrations.

The carefully saved money intended for the baby.

Nothing had come easily.

But Vivian had never been interested in what anything cost Nora.

Only what she could give.

Nora turned back to Daniel.

"You can love your mother and sister. I have never questioned that."

Her voice shook.

"But I cannot keep living in a marriage where loving them means lying to me."

Daniel stepped toward her.

She raised one hand.

"Not right now."

He stopped.

Then Nora faced the guests.

"I am not going to pretend this didn't happen just to make everyone comfortable. I was accused of stealing a diamond pin. My belongings were emptied onto the floor. My dress was torn. And nobody has offered proof that I took anything."

She looked toward Grace.

"Would you keep those photographs, please?"

Grace nodded.

"Of course."

Nora continued.

"Tomorrow, my company will provide the venue and vendors with everything necessary to finish their remaining work. But after tonight, Bennett & Bloom will not provide further services to this family."

Vivian gave a disbelieving laugh.

"You're quitting my wedding?"

"I'm ending an arrangement in which you believe you can mistreat me because we're related."

Maya gently touched Nora's arm.

"We should get you somewhere quiet."

Nora nodded.

She had made her decision.

She didn't need an apology before she could leave.

She didn't need Evelyn's permission.

She didn't even need Daniel to agree.

But as she turned toward the exit, Vivian spoke again.

"Mom, just show them your bag."

The words stopped everyone.

Evelyn stared at her daughter.

"What?"

Vivian's expression had changed.

Not because she suddenly trusted Nora.

Because she was beginning to realize that her mother might know more than she had admitted.

"You had the pin after the portraits. Just show them where you put it."

Evelyn gripped her clutch.

"Nonsense."

Daniel moved beside his mother.

"Mom. Please."

She looked at him, then at Vivian.

For the first time, neither of her children came to her defense.

Slowly, Evelyn opened the gold clasp.

May you like

Her hand disappeared inside.

And when she withdrew it, something small and dark rested between her fingers.
