Chapter 4 - The Story Celeste Wanted Everyone to Believe

The letter arrived on Monday morning.

Celeste's attorney stated that she had been struck by her husband during a family disagreement and had been forced to leave her home.

It also alleged that Darius was using accusations involving Leah to justify his behavior.

Darius read it twice.

Then he called his own attorney.

He didn't ask how to make the incident disappear.

He asked how to respond truthfully.

His attorney, Nadia Brooks, listened to the full account.

Including the slap.

“You understand that striking Celeste was wrong,” Nadia said.

“Yes.”

“And that she may pursue a complaint about it.”

“I understand.”

“Then we don't hide it. We document everything accurately and let the evidence speak.”

Darius nodded.

He hadn't contacted an attorney to prove he was a perfect man.

He wanted to protect his daughter, and he knew his own actions would also have consequences.

That afternoon, Celeste began calling relatives.

Her version of the story focused on the slap.

She described Darius as furious and unpredictable.

She told his cousin that Leah had been exaggerating a harmless punishment.

She told another relative that Darius had threatened to destroy their marriage over a childish disagreement.

By evening, people were choosing sides.

Some defended Celeste.

Some defended Darius.

A few asked whether Leah might have misunderstood what happened.

Darius refused to publish the video online.

Leah's humiliation was not entertainment for the family.

Instead, he shared the original recordings privately with the professionals handling the situation.

He also acknowledged that he had struck Celeste.

The investigators needed the full sequence, not an edited story that made him look better.

His attorney advised him to avoid direct arguments with Celeste while the legal and protective issues were being addressed.

He followed that advice.

Still, Celeste sent messages.

One evening, she wrote:

You know I love Leah. I made one mistake. You can't throw away our marriage over one mistake.

Darius stared at the words.

One mistake.

He thought about the video of Leah waiting outside.

He thought about the marks on her arm.

He thought about the way she had asked whether Celeste would lock her up again.

Finally, he replied through the appropriate legal channel rather than continuing a personal argument.

The marriage could not continue under the same conditions.

Meanwhile, Leah was struggling at school.

Her teacher, Mrs. Collins, called Darius on Wednesday.

“Leah has been unusually quiet.”

Darius closed his office door.

“What happened?”

“She became very upset when we were getting ready for recess. She thought the classroom door had been locked.”

Darius closed his eyes.

“She asked whether she was allowed to come back inside,” Mrs. Collins continued.

They discussed how to support Leah without making her feel singled out.

The school counselor offered to meet with her.

Darius agreed.

That evening, Leah was sitting at the kitchen table, pushing peas around her plate.

“How was school?” he asked.

“Okay.”

Mrs. Collins had told him that Leah was worried about being sent away again.

He didn't pretend not to know.

“Did something scary happen during recess?”

Leah's fork stopped moving.

“The door was shut.”

“Did you think you couldn't come back in?”

She nodded.

Darius moved into the chair beside her.

“You can always tell your teacher when something scares you.”

Leah looked at him.

“Even if I'm being bad?”

“Even then.”

She considered his answer.

“What if somebody says I have to stay outside?”

“Then you tell a safe grown-up. You deserve to be safe, even when you've made a mistake.”

Leah lowered her eyes.

“Mom said Daddy only likes good girls.”

Darius felt a familiar surge of anger.

This time, he stayed seated.

“Leah, look at me.”

She raised her head.

“You don't have to earn my love by behaving perfectly.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Even if I spill something?”

“Even then.”

“Even if I interrupt?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I tell on somebody?”

Darius's throat tightened.

“Especially if somebody is hurting you.”

Leah put down her fork.

Then she leaned toward him.

He held her until she was ready to eat again.

Later that night, Darius opened the secure folder on his laptop.

He had the recordings.

He had photographs of the bruises.

He had his daughter's account, offered in her own words.

But he was beginning to understand something bigger.

Celeste had not simply frightened Leah for one afternoon.

She had taught the child that love could be withdrawn as punishment.

And Darius had been absent often enough for that lesson to take hold.

When Nadia called with the next steps in the separation process, Darius made a decision.

May you like

He would cooperate fully, acknowledge his own wrongdoing, and make Leah's long-term safety his first responsibility.

Even if that meant losing the marriage he had spent two years trying to preserve.
