Chapter 4 - The Story Vanessa Wanted Everyone to Believe

By Sunday morning, a video of Evelyn burning Vanessa's handbag had spread through the family's group chats.

By lunchtime, it had appeared on Vanessa's social media.

The clip lasted twenty-two seconds.

It showed Evelyn carrying the expensive bag toward the grill, dropping it into the flames, and standing calmly while Vanessa screamed.

It did not show Vanessa pushing her mother-in-law into the birthday cake.

The caption read:

"Imagine trying to surprise your mother-in-law for her birthday, and she destroys your property in front of everyone. I'm honestly heartbroken."

Comments multiplied.

Some condemned Evelyn for destroying the bag.

Others questioned why the beginning of the confrontation was missing.

Several family members called Daniel.

A cousin asked whether Evelyn had finally lost her temper after years of tension.

An aunt said Vanessa had gone too far but burning someone's belongings was unacceptable.

Both observations troubled Daniel because both contained truth.

He had spent the previous night at home with Vanessa, arguing until nearly sunrise.

Now he sat alone in his car outside an urgent-care clinic, waiting for his mother.

Evelyn emerged carrying a small envelope of discharge papers.

The doctor had found bruising near her jaw and strained muscles in her neck. Fortunately, nothing appeared seriously injured.

But the physical pain had made sleeping difficult.

Daniel opened the passenger door.

"How are you feeling?"

"Sore."

"I'm sorry."

She climbed inside.

He waited until she had fastened her seat belt.

"Mom, Vanessa posted a video."

"I know."

"People are talking."

"People saw enough yesterday to have something to talk about."

Daniel exhaled.

"Some of them think you attacked her for no reason."

Evelyn looked out the window.

"Then some of them don't know the truth."

He hesitated.

"Vanessa says she wants you to pay for the bag."

"I already said I would."

"She also wants an apology."

"She'll receive one for what I did. Not for what she did to me."

Daniel studied his mother.

Evelyn continued.

"I was angry. I wanted her to feel the shock and humiliation she had just given me. So I took something she loved and destroyed it."

Her voice softened.

"That wasn't wisdom, Daniel. That was anger."

He nodded slowly.

"But your anger didn't make her push you," he said.

"No. It didn't."

The distinction mattered.

Evelyn wasn't interested in pretending that her retaliation had been harmless.

Nor would she allow her wrongdoing to erase Vanessa's deliberate cruelty.

They drove home without speaking for several minutes.

When they reached the house, Loretta was waiting on the front porch.

She had brought soup, fresh bread, and a small container of sliced peaches.

"Your mother needs to eat something," she told Daniel.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Apparently everybody has decided I'm helpless."

"Not helpless," Loretta replied. "Just stubborn."

Inside, Loretta showed Daniel the photographs she had taken before the party began.

One picture captured Evelyn admiring the cake.

Another showed Vanessa standing directly behind her, smiling toward Gabrielle's camera.

Loretta lowered her phone.

"I saw her put both hands on Evelyn. That wasn't an accident."

Daniel nodded.

"I believe you."

"Then act like it."

The words stung because Loretta had known him since infancy.

She had attended his school plays, graduation ceremonies, and wedding.

She was not a woman who spoke carelessly.

Daniel went outside and called Gabrielle.

He asked whether the original birthday footage still existed.

"Yes," she answered. "I recorded the whole cake presentation, including what happened afterward. I stopped filming only when people began shouting."

"Has Vanessa asked for it?"

"She asked me to send an edited version without the cake incident."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Did you?"

"No. I refused. That isn't what I agreed to produce."

He thanked her and asked whether she would preserve the original recording.

She agreed.

Then he returned to the kitchen.

His mother was slowly eating soup while Loretta sorted through the ruined birthday decorations.

Daniel told them what Gabrielle had said.

Evelyn set down her spoon.

"So there is a recording of the push?"

"Yes."

"And Vanessa knew?"

"Yes."

Loretta shook her head.

"Then she knows exactly why she posted only the second half."

That evening, Daniel confronted his wife.

Vanessa didn't deny choosing the clip.

"Your mother gets to burn my purse, but I'm not allowed to defend myself?"

"Defend yourself with the whole truth."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Nobody cares about the whole truth, Daniel. They care about what they see."

"Then show them everything."

She stared at him.

"You want me to ruin my reputation over a stupid cake?"

"You shoved my mother."

"And she destroyed my property!"

"I know. She's agreed to pay for it."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Then you need to tell your family she attacked me first."

Daniel shook his head.

"I can't say that."

Her expression turned cold.

"Then don't come home tomorrow."

Daniel stood still.

Vanessa had finally made the issue unmistakable.

She wasn't asking him to protect their marriage.

She was asking him to protect a lie.
