Chapter 6: The Man in the VIP Balcony

The man descended the private staircase without hurry.

He was tall, perhaps in his early fifties, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit and a silver watch.

Two members of the event staff followed him.

The audience gradually quieted as he approached the runway.

Mr. Harrison stepped forward.

"Mr. Bennett. We weren't expecting you to come down.""

The man offered a small smile.

"I wasn't planning to interrupt.""

He turned toward Lily.

"But I believe this young woman deserves a conversation.""

Lily stood still.

The man extended his hand.

"Daniel Bennett. Chairman of the Bennett Foundation.""

Lily shook it.

"Lily Carter.""

"I know.""

He glanced at her red gown.

"May I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"How long have you been designing clothes?""

Lily considered the question.

"Since I was eleven.""

Daniel smiled.

"And how long have you been making them yourself?""

"Since I was twelve.""

"Who taught you?""

"My grandmother.""

"What did she teach you?""

Lily looked down at the folded petals on her shoulder.

"She taught me that fabric has its own personality. You can fight it, but you'll usually lose. You have to understand how it moves.""

Daniel nodded thoughtfully.

"That's a better answer than I've heard from some professional designers.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm sure you understand that this is a family misunderstanding.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Mrs. Carter, I have been watching this presentation from the balcony.""

Vanessa forced a polite smile.

"Then you know how hard my daughters have worked.""

"I know what I saw.""

His voice remained gentle.

But there was no warmth in it.

He looked toward the blue gown.

"I saw one young woman receive applause for a design that another young woman claims to have created. Then I watched the second young woman walk onto the runway with an entirely different creation.""

He turned back to Lily.

"And I saw something unusual.""

"What?"" Lily asked.

"You didn't simply reproduce a beautiful dress. You adapted your construction after discovering damage backstage.""

Lily glanced at the altered shoulder.

"Yes, sir.""

"Most inexperienced designers would have panicked.""

"I almost did.""

Daniel smiled.

"But you didn't.""

He turned toward Eleanor.

"Would you agree that the red gown demonstrates independent design ability?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Absolutely. The construction is technically ambitious, and the solution to the damaged sleeve shows impressive problem-solving.""

Daniel looked at Mr. Harrison.

"Then I'd like the foundation to arrange an independent portfolio assessment for Miss Carter.""

The auditorium erupted.

Vanessa stepped forward immediately.

"That's wonderful, but I'm her mother. I'll handle all communication.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Miss Carter is seventeen. Any formal arrangements will follow the foundation's safeguarding and parental consent procedures. But the assessment will be based on her work.""

Vanessa nodded quickly.

"Of course. I understand.""

Lily remained silent.

She wasn't sure whether to be excited or suspicious.

Daniel noticed.

"Something troubling you?""

Lily took a breath.

"Why me?""

He considered the question.

"Because talent is easy to praise when it's convenient. It's much harder to recognize when someone is trying to make it disappear.""

The words settled over the stage.

Brianna looked down.

Vanessa adjusted the strap of her handbag.

Daniel continued.

"I've spent thirty years supporting young designers. I've seen students with expensive equipment and professional instructors produce very little. I've also seen people with almost nothing create extraordinary work.""

He glanced at Lily's gown.

"You remind me of the second kind.""

Lily's eyes began to sting.

"Thank you.""

"Don't thank me yet. I haven't seen your full portfolio.""

A faint smile crossed her face.

"Then I'd be happy to show it to you.""

"Good.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"Mr. Bennett, perhaps we should arrange that privately. There are some things you may not know about Lily.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Such as?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"She's very emotional. She sometimes misunderstands situations. I wouldn't want you to make a decision based on one dramatic evening.""

Lily stared at her mother.

"Mom, stop.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"I'm trying to protect you.""

"No. You're trying to control what people think about me.""

The audience became silent.

Daniel didn't intervene.

He allowed Lily to speak.

Lily continued.

"I made those designs. I have the sketches. I have the measurements.

I have the receipts. And I can show you every single step.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"You don't have to turn against your own family.""

Lily's voice softened.

"I didn't turn against anyone. I just stopped letting everyone speak for me.""

Brianna suddenly stepped forward.

"Mom, we need to tell them the truth.""

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

"Not another word.""

Brianna pulled away.

"No. I'm tired.""

She looked at Lily.

"I knew the blue dress wasn't mine.""

Lily's face went still.

Brianna continued, her voice trembling.

"Mom showed me your sketches. She told me you had made several designs and that she wanted me to choose one for the competition.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

Brianna looked at the audience.

"I knew Lily had designed it. I knew.""

Lily felt the air leave her lungs.

"Then why?""

Brianna wiped her cheek.

"Because I thought I deserved something good for once. Everyone always said you were talented. Mom said this was my chance to finally be the one people noticed.""

Lily stared at her sister.

"You could have asked me.""

Brianna lowered her head.

"I know.""

Vanessa stepped toward her.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Brianna backed away.

"Maybe. But I'm not going to keep lying.""

Mr. Harrison asked the competition administrator to record Brianna's statement.

Daniel remained beside Lily.

Then he looked toward the red gown once more.

"There's one more thing I'd like to ask.""

Lily turned.

"What is it?""

Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a small black business card.

"My foundation is preparing an exhibition featuring emerging designers. I would like to invite you to submit three original pieces.""

Lily accepted the card.

Her hands trembled.

"Three pieces?""

"Three. Completely original. Under your own name.""

She looked at the card.

For the first time that evening, she allowed herself to smile without worrying about who might disapprove.

"Thank you, Mr. Bennett.""

He nodded.

Then his expression became more serious.

"But before we arrange anything, there's something about your grandmother's name that I need to ask you.""

Lily looked up.

"What about my grandmother?""

Daniel studied her face.

"Was her name Margaret Carter?""

Lily's smile disappeared.

"Yes.""

Daniel slowly looked toward the red gown.

Then back at Lily.

"Then I believe there's something important you should know.""

He paused.

May you like

"Your grandmother was the reason I started this foundation.""

And Lily realized that the man who had just offered her an opportunity might know far more about her family than anyone in that auditorium.
