Chapter 3: The Dress That Changed Everything

The first thing the audience noticed was the color.
Deep crimson.
Not bright red.
Not ordinary scarlet.
A rich, dramatic shade that seemed almost black in the shadows and brilliant red beneath the spotlights.
Then they noticed the structure.
Lily's gown had a fitted bodice with intricate folded panels that created the appearance of a blooming flower. Tiny crystals traced the edges of the folds, catching the light with every movement.
The waist narrowed into a sculptural arrangement of fabric.
The skirt opened into several flowing layers, each cut at a different angle so that the entire garment moved like a living sculpture.
And the back—
The back was extraordinary.
Overlapping red panels formed a delicate architectural pattern, revealing glimpses of the darker fabric underneath as Lily walked.
She didn't rush.
She didn't look down.
She walked straight toward the center of the runway, shoulders back, chin lifted.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then someone in the audience whispered, "Oh my God.""
Another person stood.
Then another.
The applause began slowly before spreading across the auditorium.
Mr. Harrison leaned forward.
The other judges exchanged looks.
One of them, fashion designer Eleanor Brooks, reached for her glasses.
"Who made that?"" she whispered.
Mr. Harrison didn't take his eyes off Lily.
"Apparently, the girl nobody wanted to listen to.""
At the side of the stage, Brianna's smile disappeared.
Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her blue gown.
She had expected a simple dress.
Something unfinished.
Something a teenager might make in her bedroom.
Instead, Lily had walked out wearing a creation that looked as if it belonged in a professional fashion exhibition.
Brianna turned toward Chloe.
"What is this?""
Chloe didn't answer.
Brianna took a step closer to the runway.
"That wasn't the design she showed me.""
But Lily was already turning.
The red skirt opened around her legs, revealing the carefully constructed layers underneath.
The audience applauded again.
And the judges stood.
Vanessa, who had been clapping enthusiastically for Brianna minutes earlier, had stopped completely.
Her hands hung motionless in front of her chest.
Her mouth was slightly open.
She looked at Lily's dress.
Then at Brianna.
Then back at Lily.
For the first time that evening, she seemed unable to find an excuse.
Brianna approached the microphone.
"Wait.""
The applause began to fade.
She stared at Lily's gown.
"How did you make that?""
Lily stopped at the center of the runway.
She turned toward Brianna.
Her voice was calm and unmistakably clear.
"Six days. All by myself.""
The answer echoed through the auditorium.
Brianna blinked.
"That's impossible.""
Lily raised one eyebrow.
"Why?""
"Because that construction is too complicated. You would need professional equipment.""
"I made the pattern by hand.""
"You couldn't have done all those details alone.""
"I did.""
Brianna looked toward the judges.
"She's lying.""
Mr. Harrison picked up his microphone.
"Miss Brianna, you challenged her to prove her claim. I suggest you allow her to finish.""
Brianna's cheeks turned red.
"You're just going to believe her because everyone likes the dress?""
Eleanor Brooks stood.
"Actually, I'd like to examine the construction.""
Lily nodded.
"Of course.""
Eleanor approached the runway and studied the gown without touching it.
"Those overlapping panels are individually shaped. The seams are concealed beneath the folds. And this shoulder detail...""
She paused.
"That's not an easy technique.""
Lily looked at the altered sleeve.
"It was damaged backstage. I had to change the construction before coming out.""
Eleanor's eyebrows lifted.
"Someone damaged it?""
Lily glanced toward Vanessa.
Her mother immediately looked down.
"I found it crushed beneath an equipment case," Lily explained.
A murmur spread through the audience.
Brianna interrupted.
"That doesn't prove anything about the blue dress!""
Lily turned toward her.
"No. It doesn't.""
She reached into a small pocket hidden inside her skirt and removed a folded sheet of paper.
"That's why I brought this.""
She unfolded it.
It was an original design sketch.
The blue gown.
The asymmetrical neckline.
The silver vines.
The unusual shoulder structure.
Every detail was drawn in pencil, with handwritten measurements and fabric notes along the margins.
At the bottom was a date.
Six weeks earlier.
And beneath it was Lily Carter's signature.
Eleanor accepted the sketch.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at the blue gown Brianna was wearing.
"Interesting.""
Brianna stiffened.
"What?""
Eleanor pointed to the drawing.
"This isn't simply a similar concept. The pattern specifications are unusually precise.""
Lily nodded.
"I also have the original measurements, fabric receipts, and the first practice sample.""
Brianna's lips parted.
Vanessa slowly lowered herself into her chair.
But Lily wasn't finished.
She turned toward the judges.
"I don't want anyone to believe me just because I said something onstage. I want you to compare the original design with the dress she's wearing.""
Mr. Harrison nodded.
"That is a reasonable request.""
Brianna stepped backward.
"Hold on. This is getting out of control.""
For the first time, her voice sounded uncertain.
Lily looked directly at her.
"You asked me to prove it.""
The auditorium became silent again.
And high above the runway, in the darkened VIP balcony, a man who had not applauded once during the entire competition leaned forward.
He wore a black suit and sat alone behind a glass railing.
A silver watch reflected the faint light.
He had been watching Lily since she stood up.
Now he smiled.
Quietly, but unmistakably, he spoke aloud.
"Now that's real talent.""
Nobody in the auditorium seemed to hear him.
Nobody except the woman seated beside him, who turned her head in surprise.
"Do you know her?"" she whispered.
The man didn't answer.
His attention remained fixed on the girl in the red gown.
Onstage, Lily took one final step forward.
Her gaze moved from the audience to the camera lens.
She held it there.
"Want to see what happens next? Watch part two below.""
The camera stayed on her.
The red fabric settled around her feet.
Brianna stood frozen in blue.
Vanessa sat motionless in turquoise.

And somewhere above them, a powerful stranger continued watching.
*The camera cut.*
