Chapter 1: The Girl Who Refused to Sit Down

Brianna stepped onto the runway in a breathtaking blue gown, and the entire auditorium erupted in applause.

Under the white spotlights, the dress shimmered like liquid sapphire. Its fitted bodice was covered in delicate silver embroidery, while layers of blue silk flowed behind her with every step.

In the front row, Brianna's mother, Vanessa, stood and clapped enthusiastically.

"That's my girl!"" Vanessa called proudly.

"Look at her! Absolutely stunning!""

The audience applauded louder.

Then a chair scraped violently against the floor.

A young girl stood up several rows behind the judges.

She couldn't have been more than seventeen. Her name was Lily Carter, and her hands were trembling as she pointed directly at Brianna.

"I designed this masterpiece! Brianna, you stole my dress!""

The applause stopped.

A few people laughed, assuming it was some kind of joke.

Brianna froze near the edge of the runway.

She slowly turned toward Lily, tilted her head, and allowed a small, mocking smile to cross her face.

"Prove it.""

Two words.

But they landed like a slap.

Lily opened her mouth to respond.

Before she could speak, Vanessa reached across the aisle and grabbed her daughter's forearm.

"Sit down," Vanessa hissed.

"Mom, let go.""

"Stop embarrassing us.""

Vanessa pulled harder, trying to force Lily back into her seat.

But Lily planted both feet against the floor.

She twisted her arm free.

And she stood her ground.

"Mom, I know what I made.""

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

"Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Brianna has been preparing for this competition for months. You're going to accuse her of stealing because you're jealous?""

"I'm not jealous.""

"Then sit down.""

Lily didn't move.

Instead, she looked from her mother to Brianna.

The blue gown continued to sparkle beneath the lights.

Lily's eyes followed every detail: the asymmetrical neckline, the silver vines embroidered across the waist, and the unusual folded structure around the shoulders.

She recognized every single element.

She had spent six nights working on that design.

Six nights cutting fabric, sketching patterns, and sewing until her fingers were sore.

And now someone else was receiving a standing ovation for it.

Brianna crossed her arms.

"Security, are we going to let someone interrupt the show like this?""

The host stepped forward, visibly uncomfortable.

"Young lady, please return to your seat. If you have a formal complaint, you can submit it after the presentation.""

Lily shook her head.

"After the presentation? Everyone will have already decided she deserves the award.""

A judge named Mr. Harrison leaned toward his microphone.

"Miss Carter, do you have evidence that this design belongs to you?""

"I do.""

"Then why haven't you presented it?""

Lily hesitated.

Because her evidence wasn't in a folder.

It wasn't on her phone.

It was hanging in a garment bag backstage.

Her original creation.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Don't do this, Lily. Your father and I didn't raise you to behave like this.""

Lily looked at her mother.

For one painful second, she seemed younger than seventeen.

"Then why did you let her wear it?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Watch your mouth.""

Brianna laughed softly.

"Maybe she should stop making accusations and start making something worth wearing.""

Several audience members chuckled.

Lily heard them.

She also noticed Brianna's right hand move instinctively toward the silver embroidery at her waist.

A tiny gesture.

But Lily remembered sewing that section herself.

She remembered the mistake she had made in the third silver vine and how she had hidden it beneath a tiny cluster of beads.

That same mistake was now visible on Brianna's dress.

Lily pointed toward it.

"Look at the embroidery near her left hip. The third vine has a broken loop. I made that mistake, and I corrected it by covering the thread with three tiny silver beads.""

Brianna's smile faltered.

Only for a moment.

Then she laughed again.

"That's ridiculous. Anyone can look at a dress and invent a story.""

Mr. Harrison raised his hand.

"Enough.""

The room fell silent.

He removed his glasses and studied Lily.

"Miss Carter, are you claiming you created the entire garment?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Not just the sketch?""

"The pattern, the structure, the embroidery, everything.""

"And you can demonstrate that?""

Lily took a breath.

Then she looked directly at Brianna.

"That wasn't even my best design.""

The audience murmured.

Brianna's eyebrows rose.

"Excuse me?""

Lily turned toward the judges.

"That dress is only one of my collections. I have something better.""

Mr. Harrison slowly stood.

"Then show us.""

Lily's eyes widened.

"Really?""

He nodded.

"Really. You have the floor.""

Lily looked toward the backstage entrance.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"No. Absolutely not.""

"Mom—"

"We are leaving.""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag and started pulling Lily toward the aisle.

But Lily didn't follow.

For the first time in years, she wasn't waiting for her mother's permission.

"I want to finish what I started.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"You'll regret humiliating this family.""

Lily swallowed.

"Maybe I already regret staying quiet.""

The audience went completely still.

Mr. Harrison turned toward the production manager.

"Give the young lady six minutes. Prepare the second runway entrance.""

Brianna stepped closer to the microphone.

"You're actually going to let her do this?""

Mr. Harrison looked at her.

"You challenged her to prove it.""

Brianna's jaw tightened.

"I didn't expect you to take her seriously.""

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have challenged her.""

A wave of whispers swept through the auditorium.

Lily disappeared behind the curtains.

And for the first time that evening, Brianna wasn't smiling.

But backstage, Lily discovered something that made her heart stop.

Her garment bag was missing.

And the backstage assistant was standing beside an empty clothing rack, holding a small white envelope.

"Miss Carter," he said nervously.

"Someone left this for you.""

Inside was a handwritten note.

You should have stayed in your seat.

Lily stared at the words.

Then she heard footsteps approaching behind her.

May you like

Someone had followed her backstage.

And whoever it was knew exactly what she was planning to show the judges.
