Chapter 9: The Last Person Danielle Trusted

Darius stared at the photograph until the screen began to dim.

His mother.

Evelyn.

Standing beside Danielle's car on the night of the accident.

He zoomed in.

The photograph was old, but the details were unmistakable.

Evelyn wore the same green coat she had told police she was wearing that evening.

Darius remembered that night.

He remembered the phone call.

He remembered Evelyn telling him Danielle had left the house alone.

He remembered arriving at the hospital and being told there had been a terrible accident.

But now he had a photograph that raised a question he had never considered.

Why had his mother been standing beside Danielle's car?

“Daddy?””

Amara's little voice brought him back.

He locked his phone.

“What's wrong, princess?””

“You look sad.””

Darius forced a smile.

“I'm just thinking.””

Amara touched his cheek.

“Don't be sad. Mommy said you have to be strong.””

He closed his eyes.

Then he hugged her.

“I love you, sweetheart.””

“I love you more.””

He kissed her forehead and tucked her beneath the blanket.

After she fell asleep, he went downstairs.

Evelyn was in the kitchen preparing tea.

“Mom, we need to talk.””

She looked up.

“Of course.””

Darius placed the photograph on the counter.

Evelyn's hand stopped moving.

The spoon slipped from her fingers.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone sent it to me.””

She looked at the photograph again.

Darius watched her face.

“Why were you there?””

Evelyn sat down slowly.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She pressed her hands together.

“Danielle called me that evening. She was frightened. She said someone had been following her.””

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

“You told me you didn't know anything about that.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everybody keeps saying that!””

His voice echoed through the kitchen.

He lowered it immediately, remembering Amara was upstairs.

“Mom, I need the truth. Did you meet Danielle that night?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you touch her car?””

“I didn't drive it.””

“Then why are you standing beside it?””

Evelyn began crying.

“Because I was trying to stop her from leaving.””

Darius froze.

“What?””

“She wanted to go to the police. She had discovered everything about Nathan and Patricia. She said she had enough evidence to destroy them.””

“And you tried to stop her?””

“I was terrified!””

“Of what?””

Evelyn covered her face.

“Patricia told me that if Danielle went to the police, everyone would lose everything. She said the foundation would collapse. She said your business would be investigated and Amara's trust would be frozen.””

Darius stepped back.

“So you chose them?””

“No!””

“You stood beside her car while she was frightened and alone!””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I begged her to wait. I told her I would help her find another way.””

“What happened?””

“She pushed past me. She got into the car and drove away.””

Darius stared at her.

“Did you see the accident?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I was still there when the other vehicle came around the corner.””

Darius felt the blood drain from his face.

“What other vehicle?””

“A black SUV.””

“Did it hit her?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I heard the impact. I ran toward the road. But the SUV didn't stop.””

Darius grabbed the edge of the counter.

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

Evelyn sobbed.

“Because Patricia told me the driver was connected to powerful people. She said if I spoke, they would destroy our family.””

Darius stared at his mother.

For three years, he had believed his mother had been there to comfort him after losing Danielle.

Now he was discovering she had been there before the accident too.

“You let me bury my wife without knowing what happened.””

“I am so sorry.””

“You let Amara grow up believing her mother died in an ordinary accident.””

“I know.””

Darius turned away.

He couldn't look at her.

Then Evelyn reached into her blouse pocket and removed a folded piece of paper.

“There is something else.””

He turned back.

“What?””

“Danielle gave me this before she left.””

Darius took the paper.

It was a handwritten note.

Evelyn,

If I don't make it home tonight, please tell Darius that I never stopped loving him.

Tell him the truth about the foundation.

And please protect Amara.

She is the only innocent person in all of this.

Darius read the note twice.

Then he noticed something written at the bottom.

A name.

*Robert Hale.*

He looked up.

“Who is Robert Hale?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“The man who was supposed to investigate the accident.””

Darius frowned.

“I thought the police handled it.””

“They did. But Robert was a private investigator Patricia hired afterward.””

“Why?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Darius immediately called Marcus.

Within twenty minutes, Marcus arrived.

He examined the photograph and the note.

“This changes everything.””

“Can we find Robert?””

Marcus nodded.

“I'll make some calls.””

But before he could finish, Darius's phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

He answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Darius, please listen.””

“I'm not interested in another excuse.””

“I'm not calling about myself.””

Darius said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“I have something you need to know about your mother.””

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“What about her?””

“Patricia has been keeping a file on her for years. She has photographs, recordings, everything.””

Darius tightened his grip on the phone.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I finally understand what my mother was doing.””

“What was she doing?””

“She wasn't trying to make me your wife because she liked you. She wanted access to your company.””

Darius looked at Marcus.

Vanessa continued.

“Patricia needed someone inside your house. Someone who could get close to you, earn your trust, and make sure Amara's trust could be challenged.””

Darius's voice became cold.

“And you agreed.””

“I did.””

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“But I didn't know what happened to Danielle.””

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother is looking for me.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Vanessa, if you know something about my wife's death, tell the police.””

“I have proof. But you need to see it first.””

“Where?””

“An old storage garage on Miller Street. Nathan is there.””

Darius immediately stood.

“Stay away from him.””

“I can't. He's the only person who can prove what my mother did.””

The call ended.

Marcus shook his head.

“This could be a trap.””

Darius nodded.

“Then we take the police.””

He called the authorities and gave them the address.

An hour later, several officers arrived at the storage facility.

The garage door was half-open.

Inside stood Nathan Cole.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and his face was covered in sweat.

Vanessa stood beside an old filing cabinet.

When she saw Darius, she stepped forward.

“Thank you for coming.””

He didn't approach her.

“Where is the evidence?””

Nathan opened the cabinet.

Inside were boxes of financial records, photographs, and old legal documents.

He removed a thick envelope.

“Everything is here.””

Darius took it.

“What happened to Danielle?””

Nathan looked toward the police officers.

Then he looked directly at Darius.

“I didn't cause the accident. But I know who arranged the cover-up.””

“Who?””

Nathan swallowed.

“Patricia.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Nathan continued.

“She hired the driver. She wanted Danielle's evidence destroyed. The driver was supposed to scare her into stopping.””

Darius felt his knees weaken.

“Are you saying she ordered someone to kill my wife?””

Nathan hesitated.

“I'm saying Patricia knew exactly what could happen that night.””

A police officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole, you're coming with us.””

Nathan nodded.

But before he was taken away, he turned toward Darius.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“Danielle wasn't carrying the original trust documents when she died.””

Darius frowned.

“Where were they?””

Nathan pointed toward the envelope.

“Read the final page.””

Darius opened it.

There was a photocopy of a document bearing Danielle's signature.

It was a declaration that named Amara as the sole beneficiary of the controlling shares.

But beneath it was another signature.

Patricia Moore.

And beside Patricia's signature was a handwritten sentence:

*IF THE CHILD CANNOT BE REMOVED LEGALLY, THE GUARDIAN MUST BE REPLACED.*

Darius slowly raised his eyes.

“Who was the guardian?””

Nathan looked toward Evelyn.

“Your mother.””

Darius turned.

Evelyn stood in the garage entrance, pale and trembling.

And behind her, a familiar voice spoke.

“That's enough.””

Patricia Moore stepped into the light.

She held a small black handgun pointed toward the floor.

Her eyes were fixed on the envelope.

“Give me Danielle's documents,” she said.

Nobody moved.

Patricia raised the weapon.

“Now.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Mom, stop!””

Patricia turned toward her daughter.

“You have already ruined everything.””

Then she looked back at Darius.

“You wanted the truth about your wife?””

Her lips formed a cold smile.

“Fine. I'll tell you exactly what happened that night.””

Darius stared at her.

Patricia took one step forward.

“But first, you need to understand something.””

She pointed toward the envelope.

“Danielle didn't die because she discovered the missing money.””

She paused.

“She died because she discovered who I had chosen to inherit her position.””

Darius's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Patricia smiled.

May you like

And then she said a name that made Evelyn collapse against the doorway.

“Amara.””
