Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Plan

At 8:30 the following morning, Darius sat in his office with Marcus Reed.

On the desk were three things: the security footage, a printed financial statement, and a photograph of Nathan Cole.

Marcus adjusted his glasses.

“I reviewed the footage you sent me. What happened to Amara is serious. We need to protect her first, and we need to establish exactly what Vanessa has been doing.””

Darius leaned forward.

“I want her nowhere near my daughter.””

“That's understandable. But there's another issue.””

Marcus slid the financial statement across the desk.

“Your joint household account has made several payments to a consulting company called Cole Advisory.””

Darius frowned.

“How much?””

“Just over eighty thousand dollars in four months.””

Darius stared at him.

“Vanessa told me those expenses were for the renovation.””

“There's no record of renovation invoices matching these payments.””

“Who owns the company?””

Marcus tapped the paper.

“Nathan Cole.””

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“What does Nathan have to do with my marriage?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That's what I want to find out.””

At that moment, Darius's phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

He answered.

“What?””

Her voice was unusually sweet.

“Good morning, darling.””

“Don't call me that.””

A brief silence followed.

“Darius, I think we both got emotional yesterday. I want us to talk.””

“There is nothing to discuss.””

“I'm your wife.””

“And Amara is my daughter.””

“I'm aware.””

“Then you should have acted like an adult.””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“I made a mistake. I admit that. But I don't deserve to be treated like a criminal.””

Darius looked at the frozen image of his daughter crying on the computer screen.

“You'll hear from my lawyer.””

“Wait.””

Her voice suddenly became sharper.

“If you take this any further, you might regret what you discover.””

Darius sat upright.

“Is that a threat?””

“No. It's a warning.””

She hung up.

Marcus had heard the conversation.

“We need to be careful.””

Darius nodded.

But he was no longer interested in protecting Vanessa's reputation.

He wanted the truth.

At 10:15, Evelyn arrived with Amara.

The little girl wore a soft pink hoodie and a knitted hat that Evelyn had bought that morning.

She walked into the office carrying a small wooden box.

“Daddy?””

Darius immediately stood.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

Amara placed the box on the desk.

“Can I show you something?””

He opened it.

Inside were several photographs, a pink hair ribbon, and a small envelope.

Darius recognized the photographs immediately.

They were pictures of Danielle, Amara's mother.

One showed Danielle holding baby Amara in a hospital bed.

Another showed them sitting together in the garden.

But the envelope was unfamiliar.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Mommy's old jewelry box,” Amara answered.

“Vanessa told me I had to throw away Mommy's things because they made the house look sad.””

Darius's jaw tightened.

“She told you to throw these away?””

Amara nodded.

“But I didn't.””

Evelyn gently touched the little girl's shoulder.

“She hid them in her room.””

Darius opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note from Danielle.

He recognized her handwriting immediately.

His hands began to shake.

My darling Amara,

If you're reading this someday, remember that you never have to change who you are to make someone love you.

Your curls, your laugh, your little stubborn heart. These things are yours.

Never let anyone convince you that being loved means becoming smaller.

Love, Mommy.

Darius couldn't continue.

He pressed the letter against his chest.

For a moment, the office was silent.

Then Amara asked a question.

“Daddy, did Mommy know Vanessa would be mean to me?””

Darius knelt and hugged her.

“No, sweetheart. But Mommy knew that you deserved to be loved exactly as you are.””

Amara held onto him.

And Darius made a promise.

Nobody would ever make his daughter feel unwanted in her own home again.

After Evelyn took Amara downstairs, Marcus received a call.

He listened for several seconds before looking at Darius.

“That's interesting.””

“What?””

“I contacted the bank's fraud department. One of the transfers to Cole Advisory was authorized using your electronic signature.””

Darius frowned.

“I didn't authorize it.””

“That's what I suspected.””

Marcus opened his laptop.

“There's something else. Nathan Cole submitted paperwork three weeks ago requesting information about your life insurance policies and business holdings.””

Darius stared at him.

“Why would a financial consultant need that?””

“He wouldn't, unless he had another purpose.””

Darius stood.

“Find out everything about him.””

Marcus nodded.

“I already have someone checking.””

Just then, a message arrived on Darius's phone.

It was from an unknown number.

*YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR WIFE WHY SHE NEEDED A COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL WILL.*

Darius read it twice.

His stomach turned.

He had signed his will shortly after Danielle's death. Most of his estate had been placed in a trust for Amara, with Evelyn appointed as a temporary guardian of the financial arrangements.

Vanessa knew about the trust.

But she had never been named as a beneficiary.

He showed Marcus the message.

Marcus's expression darkened.

“Don't respond yet.””

Darius looked toward the hallway.

“What is going on in my house?””

Marcus closed his laptop.

“I think someone has been planning something for a long time.””

Meanwhile, across town, Vanessa sat in a private beauty salon.

Her platinum hair was perfectly styled, but her hands shook as she held a glass of water.

A woman entered wearing a cream-colored coat.

She was elegant, middle-aged, and carried a leather folder.

Vanessa looked up.

“You're late, Patricia.””

The woman placed the folder on the table.

“Your husband has started asking questions.””

“I know.””

“Then we have a problem.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Can you fix it?””

Patricia opened the folder.

Inside were copies of Darius's financial documents, his insurance records, and a photograph of Amara.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“What are you doing with that?””

Patricia calmly closed the folder.

“You told me you wanted the child removed from the equation.””

“I wanted her out of the way, not this!””

“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before taking matters into your own hands.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with frustration.

“I didn't know he would come home early!””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Listen carefully. Darius must believe you are the victim. If he files for divorce before we finish, everything becomes much more difficult.””

Vanessa looked toward the salon entrance.

“What about the footage?””

“It's not the only evidence.””

“What does that mean?””

Patricia leaned closer.

“Someone else knows about the original agreement.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Who?””

Patricia opened the folder again and removed a single photograph.

It showed Darius standing beside a woman at a hotel entrance.

The woman wasn't Vanessa.

And she wasn't Danielle.

Vanessa stared at the photograph, her face slowly losing color.

“Who is she?””

Patricia looked directly into her eyes.

“That's the woman your husband has been secretly looking for since before he married you.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“What?””

Patricia turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were six words.
