Chapter 6: The Nursery Door

Darius drove home as fast as he safely could.

Marcus followed in his own car and called emergency services.

When Darius reached the house, the front door was open.

A broken picture frame lay near the entrance.

He rushed inside.

“Mom!””

“Upstairs!””

Evelyn's voice came from the hallway.

Darius took the stairs two at a time.

He found his mother standing outside Amara's bedroom.

Her green blouse was torn at the shoulder, and one hand was pressed against her arm.

“Are you hurt?””

“I'm fine. Go to Amara.””

Darius pushed open the bedroom door.

Amara was sitting on the bed, crying.

Her knitted hat had fallen onto the floor.

“Daddy!””

He rushed toward her.

“I'm here, princess.””

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

“Vanessa came back.””

“I know. Are you hurt?””

Amara shook her head.

“She wanted Mommy's chair.””

Darius looked around.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Evelyn appeared behind him.

“She went into the nursery.””

Darius immediately turned.

The nursery was at the end of the hallway.

It had barely changed since Danielle's death. The pale-yellow curtains remained, as did the wooden rocking chair near the window.

He entered cautiously.

Vanessa was standing beside the chair.

She held a screwdriver in one hand.

The seat cushion had been removed, and the fabric lining underneath was torn open.

A small leather pouch lay on the floor.

Darius stopped.

“Put the screwdriver down.””

Vanessa turned.

For a moment, she looked frightened.

Then she forced a laugh.

“Darius. You're home.””

“What are you doing?””

“I was looking for something.””

“In my daughter's nursery?””

“It's just an old chair.””

“Put it down.””

Vanessa glanced at the pouch.

Darius followed her eyes.

He understood immediately.

“Is that what you're looking for?””

Vanessa kicked the pouch beneath the chair.

“No idea what you're talking about.””

Darius stepped forward.

“Don't move.””

She raised her hands.

“You're making a mistake.””

“You broke into my daughter's room.””

“I still have legal rights to this property!””

“Not if you're trespassing.””

Vanessa's expression turned vicious.

“You think you're so innocent? You brought another woman into our marriage every single day.””

Darius frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“Danielle!””

He stared at her.

“You're jealous of a woman who's been dead for three years?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Even dead, she gets everything. Her photographs are everywhere. Her daughter gets all your attention. Her foundation, her memories, her precious little legacy!””

Darius looked at her with disgust.

“So that's what this was about?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You have no idea what it feels like to live in the shadow of someone who isn't even alive.””

“I never asked you to replace her.””

“You never gave me a chance!””

“You had a chance. You chose to hurt a child.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“She should never have been here in the first place!””

The words echoed through the nursery.

Darius froze.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa realized what she had admitted.

She looked toward the doorway.

But Marcus had just arrived.

He stood behind Darius, holding his phone.

“I think we've heard enough.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Get out of my way.””

Marcus didn't move.

“The police are on their way.””

Vanessa looked at Darius.

“You wouldn't do this to me.””

He pointed toward the hallway.

“You have ten seconds to walk out of my daughter's room.””

She grabbed her handbag and rushed past him.

But before she reached the stairs, she turned around.

“You think that pouch will save you?””

Darius looked down at the floor.

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask your mother what she signed three years ago.””

Then she ran downstairs.

Darius immediately picked up the leather pouch.

It was locked with a small brass clasp.

Marcus examined it.

“Don't open it until we document everything.””

Evelyn approached slowly.

Darius looked at her.

“Mom, what did Vanessa mean?””

Evelyn's face changed.

She looked toward Amara's bedroom.

Then she lowered her voice.

“There's something I should have told you.””

Darius felt another wave of dread.

“What?””

Evelyn took a trembling breath.

“Three years ago, shortly after Danielle died, Vanessa came to see me.””

“Why?””

“She told me she had documents proving that Danielle had been stealing from the foundation.””

Darius shook his head.

“That was a lie.””

“I know that now.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Evelyn began crying.

“Because she showed me a document with Danielle's signature. It said that the money had been transferred with her permission.””

Darius stared at her.

“Did you believe it?””

“I was grieving too. I was trying to protect you. Vanessa told me that if the scandal became public, Amara's inheritance could be frozen.””

“So what did you do?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I signed a statement agreeing not to challenge the financial settlement.””

Darius stepped back.

“You helped them?””

“I didn't know what they were doing!””

Evelyn covered her face.

“I swear to you, son. I thought I was protecting Amara.””

Marcus opened the pouch carefully.

Inside were several folded documents, a small memory card, and a photograph.

Darius picked up the photograph.

It showed Danielle standing outside a courthouse.

Beside her was Nathan.

But in the background stood someone else.

Someone Darius recognized immediately.

His mother.

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

Her face turned pale.

“That isn't possible.””

Darius looked at her.

“Mom?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never met Nathan outside the house.””

Marcus turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten date on the back.

It was two days before Danielle died.

Underneath it were six words.

*THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT WAS NEVER ABOUT MONEY.*

Marcus opened one of the documents.

He read the first paragraph.

Then his expression changed.

“Darius…”

“What?””

Marcus slowly placed the paper on the table.

“This isn't just a financial agreement.””

Darius looked down.

At the top of the document was the name of a private guardianship arrangement.

Below it were the signatures of Vanessa, Nathan, and Evelyn.

But there was a fourth signature.

Danielle's.

And the date was three weeks before her death.

Darius stared at the paper.

“Why would Danielle sign an agreement involving Vanessa?””

Nobody answered.

Then Amara appeared at the nursery doorway.

She was holding her mother's old pink hairbrush.

“Daddy?””

Darius turned immediately.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

Amara looked at the document.

Then she pointed toward the signature.

“That's Mommy's handwriting.””

Darius nodded.

“Yes, baby.””

Amara hesitated.

“Grandma said Mommy made a special promise before she died.””

Evelyn looked up sharply.

“What promise, sweetheart?””

Amara held the hairbrush against her chest.

“Mommy told me that if anything happened to her, I should ask Grandma to find the little silver key.””

Darius and Evelyn exchanged a stunned glance.

Amara continued.

“She said the key would show Daddy who was telling the truth.””

Marcus looked down at the pouch.

Then he noticed something hidden beneath the torn lining.

A tiny silver key had been stitched into the fabric.

And on its handle were two engraved letters.

*D.W.*

Darius reached for it.

But before his fingers touched the key, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message.

*IF YOU OPEN WHAT DANIELLE LEFT BEHIND, YOU WILL DISCOVER WHY YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO INHERIT YOUR COMPANY.*

Darius slowly raised his eyes.

For the first time, he understood that Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to hurt Amara.

May you like

Someone had been trying to erase the little girl's future.

And Danielle had left behind the one thing that could expose them all.
