Chapter 2: What the Cameras Saw
Darius carried Amara into his bedroom and gently placed her on the edge of the bed.
Evelyn followed with a warm towel and a glass of water.
“Here you go, sweetheart,” she whispered.
Amara held the glass with both hands, but she couldn't stop trembling.
Darius crouched in front of her.
“Can you tell Daddy why Vanessa cut your hair?””
Amara stared at the carpet.
“She said I looked like Mommy.””
Darius went completely still.
“What?””
Amara rubbed her eyes.
“She said she didn't want me looking like Mommy anymore.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Darius sat beside his daughter.
“Baby, looking like Mommy is never something you should be ashamed of.””
“But Vanessa said you married her because you wanted a new family. She said Mommy was gone and I needed to stop pretending.””
Darius felt something tighten in his chest.
He had known Vanessa could be impatient.
He had known she occasionally complained about raising a child who wasn't biologically hers.
But he had never imagined she was saying these things to Amara.
“Did she tell you not to tell me?””
Amara nodded.
“She said you were already stressed with work. She said if I made you angry, you might send me away.””
Darius closed his eyes.
He had missed it.
All those evenings when Amara had become unusually quiet.
All those mornings when she had asked whether she could spend the day with Grandma.
He had mistaken her silence for adjustment.
“I am so sorry, sweetheart.””
He kissed her forehead.
“You will never be sent away. Do you understand?””
Amara nodded, but her little voice broke.
“Are you going to make her my mommy again?””
“No.””
Darius took both her hands.
“Your mommy will always be your mommy. Nobody can replace her.””
Evelyn looked away, wiping her eyes.
A few minutes later, Darius went downstairs.
Vanessa was sitting on the living-room sofa, drinking sparkling water as if nothing had happened.
She glanced at him.
“Are we finished with the drama?””
Darius stood in front of her.
“No. We're just getting started.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Honestly, Darius, I expected you to be more reasonable.””
“Why did you shave her head?””
“I already explained. Her hair was difficult to manage.””
“That's a lie.””
Vanessa put down her glass.
“Excuse me?””
“She told me what you said.””
For a fraction of a second, Vanessa's expression shifted.
Then she laughed.
“She's seven. Children invent things.””
“She said you told her she needed to stop looking like her dead mother.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“I might have said something about her resemblance. I didn't expect her to turn it into a tragedy.””
Darius stared at her.
“You think this is funny?””
“I think you're allowing a child to manipulate you.””
He stepped closer.
“Do you understand what you did?””
“I disciplined her.””
“You traumatized her.””
Vanessa stood up and smoothed her burgundy dress.
“You know what your problem is? You treat Amara like she's made of glass. Every time I try to establish boundaries, you undermine me.””
“Boundaries don't involve humiliating a little girl.””
“Then perhaps you should raise her yourself.””
Darius nodded slowly.
“That's exactly what I'm going to do.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you're leaving this house tonight.””
Her face turned red.
“You cannot throw me out!””
“Watch me.””
“This is my home too!””
“Not anymore.””
Vanessa grabbed her phone.
“Fine. Call your lawyer. Call the police.
Call whoever you want. You have no idea what you're risking.””
Darius frowned.
“What am I risking?””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she picked up her handbag and marched upstairs.
Darius immediately called his attorney, Marcus Reed.
“Marcus, I need you at the house.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa hurt Amara. I want to know my options for protecting my daughter and removing Vanessa from the home.””
Marcus became serious.
“Is the child safe right now?””
“Yes. She's upstairs with my mother.””
“Don't confront Vanessa physically. Document everything. I'll be there in thirty minutes.””
After ending the call, Darius walked into his home office.
He opened the security system on his computer.
The property had cameras in the hallways, entrances, and common areas. He had installed them after a burglary two years earlier.
He selected the footage from the upstairs hallway.
At first, everything appeared normal.
Then he saw Vanessa leading Amara toward the makeup room.
The little girl was holding a pink hairbrush.
Vanessa was carrying the black clipper.
Darius pressed play.
The footage showed Vanessa closing the door.
The audio was clear enough to hear the conversation.
“Sit down, Amara.””
“Why?””
“Because I have something to take care of.””
“But Grandma said we're going to the party.””
“Your grandmother doesn't make decisions in this house.””
Then Vanessa said something that made Darius grip the edge of his desk.
“Your father has been spending too much money on you. New clothes, hair appointments, toys. Everything is about you.””
Amara answered quietly.
“But Daddy loves me.””
Vanessa leaned toward her.
“And what happens when he realizes you cost him more than you're worth?””
Darius stopped breathing for a moment.
He continued watching.
Vanessa shaved the first section of Amara's hair.
Then the second.
And the third.
He watched his daughter cry while his wife laughed dismissively.
But something else caught his attention.
At exactly 4:17 p.m., Vanessa received a phone call.
She stepped away from Amara and answered it.
The camera captured her saying:
“I'm doing it now. After tonight, he'll finally understand.””
Darius rewound the footage.
He listened again.
“After tonight, he'll finally understand.””
Understand what?
He opened another camera recording from the driveway.
At 3:52 p.m., a black SUV had arrived.
A man in a gray jacket stepped out.
He carried a small equipment case and entered through the side door.
Darius didn't recognize him.
He fast-forwarded.
The man left twenty minutes later.
Then Darius noticed something strange.
The man hadn't entered the house alone.
Vanessa had met him at the door and handed him an envelope.
Darius zoomed in.
The image was grainy, but he could make out the man's face.
He looked familiar.
Very familiar.
Darius opened his contacts and searched the man's name.
His fingers stopped over the keyboard.
It was Nathan Cole.
The private financial consultant who had handled the paperwork for his second marriage.
Why had Nathan been visiting his house?
And why had Vanessa been paying him?
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
Evelyn stood at the office door.
“Darius, sweetheart, Amara is asking for you.””
He closed the laptop.
“Is she okay?””
“She wants to know whether her hair will grow back.””
Darius's expression softened.
He walked upstairs.
Amara was sitting on the bed, staring at herself in a small hand mirror.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, princess?””
“Will I look pretty again?””
Darius sat beside her.
“You have always been beautiful.””
“But I don't look like myself.””
He gently took the mirror from her hands.
“Then we'll help you find a new style. And when your hair grows back, we'll take care of every curl together.””
Amara hesitated.
“Like Mommy used to?””
Darius nodded.
“Exactly like Mommy used to.””
She leaned against him.
For the first time that evening, she smiled.
But downstairs, Vanessa was doing something far more dangerous.
She had found the number of the man who had helped her arrange the visit.
And she was sending him a message.
*DELETE THE FILES. DARIUS HAS SEEN THE FOOTAGE.*
A reply arrived seconds later.
*THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE. THE ORIGINAL RECORDING IS ALREADY BACKED UP.*
Vanessa's face went pale.
She typed again.
*WHERE?*

The answer made her drop her phone.
