Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

Richard didn't move for several seconds.

He stood in the middle of his office, phone pressed against his ear, staring at Vanessa.

“Peter, are you absolutely certain?”” he asked.

“Yes, sir. I've watched it twice.””

“Send me the original file. Don't forward it through anyone else.””

“I understand.””

Richard ended the call.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What did he say?””

Richard placed his phone on the desk.

“He found a recording from the night the original transfer was made.””

“And Daniel was there?””

“Apparently.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That doesn't make sense. Daniel told me he never approved that transaction.””

Richard opened his laptop.

“Let's not jump to conclusions.””

He connected his phone and waited for the file to download.

A progress bar appeared.

Vanessa stood behind his chair, gripping the backrest.

When the video finally opened, a dark office appeared on the screen.

The camera seemed to be positioned inside a filing cabinet or behind a stack of folders.

A man entered.

Marcus.

He was carrying a leather briefcase.

A few seconds later, another man walked into the room.

Daniel.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The video had no sound for the first few seconds.

Marcus placed several documents on the desk.

Daniel looked through them.

Then he pointed toward one page.

The camera angle made it difficult to see what he was saying.

Richard paused the recording.

“Look at his hand.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

Daniel was pointing at the transfer authorization.

Richard zoomed in.

Then the audio began.

Marcus's voice was clear.

“It's a standard authorization. Once it's approved, the funds can move without delays.””

Daniel replied, “I want the original agreement attached.””

Marcus nodded.

“Of course.””

Daniel looked through another page.

“And I want the money returned to the account by the end of the quarter.””

Richard stopped breathing for a moment.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“Dad…”

Richard raised his hand.

“Wait.””

The video continued.

Marcus leaned toward Daniel.

“You don't need to worry. Nobody will question it.””

Daniel replied, “That's exactly why I'm worried.””

Then the recording ended.

Vanessa turned toward her father.

“He knew?””

Richard didn't answer.

“He knew about the transfer?””

Richard replayed the final seconds.

Daniel's words echoed through the office.

I want the money returned.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. That can't be right.””

Richard closed the laptop.

“We need to speak to him.””

Meanwhile, Daniel was sitting at his kitchen table when his phone rang.

Richard.

He answered immediately.

“Did you find something?””

“I need you to come to my office.””

“What's happened?””

“Peter found a recording.””

Daniel went still.

“What recording?””

“From the night of the original transfer.””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“Does it show Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Richard paused.

“It shows you too.””

Daniel slowly stood.

“Send it to me.””

“I'd rather you watched it here.””

“Richard, what exactly does it show?””

Richard's voice became unusually careful.

“It shows you discussing the transfer.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“That isn't possible.””

“I'm looking at it right now.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then something came back to him.

Three years earlier, Marcus had arranged a meeting about a property development project. Daniel remembered reviewing several documents, but he had never authorized any money to leave his company.

He had specifically requested additional safeguards.

“Richard,” Daniel said, “I never approved that transfer.””

“I know what you told me.””

“Then why does the recording make it look like I did?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel ended the call and immediately opened his laptop.

He searched through his old business emails.

Most of the correspondence had been archived.

He found the original meeting invitation.

Then another email.

It had been sent the morning after the meeting.

*Subject: Revised Authorization Documents*

The sender was Marcus.

Daniel opened the attachment.

His eyes narrowed.

There were two versions of the same document.

One contained the original conditions Daniel had requested.

The other contained an additional authorization allowing Marcus to move the funds without further approval.

Daniel stared at the second document.

He remembered signing the first version.

He had never seen the second.

He immediately called his former accountant.

“Tom, I need you to check something.””

“Daniel? What's going on?””

“Do you remember the Collins property deal?””

“Of course.””

“Did I ever authorize the transfer?””

Tom was silent.

Then he said, “I thought you knew.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Knew what?””

“The transfer was approved using your electronic authorization.””

“I never approved it.””

Tom lowered his voice.

“Daniel, there was an access request from your office that night.””

“Whose access?””

“Vanessa's.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“My wife's?””

“Yes. Her credentials were used to retrieve the original agreement.””

He ended the call without another word.

Upstairs, Lily began calling for him.

“Daddy?””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

He had spent years believing he understood every part of his marriage.

Now he was discovering that even the documents connected to his business had passed through his wife's hands.

But he still needed to know whether she had been involved knowingly.

At Richard's office, Vanessa was watching the recording again.

This time, she noticed something.

“Stop.””

Richard paused.

“What?””

“Go back.””

He rewound the video.

Vanessa pointed toward the corner of the desk.

There was a small white envelope.

She recognized it immediately.

It was the envelope Marcus had given her three years earlier.

She remembered opening it at home.

Inside had been a set of access codes and a request to download a business document.

Marcus had told her it was necessary to complete a routine review.

She had done it.

But she hadn't known he was going to use those credentials to authorize anything.

“Dad, I think I know how he got the documents.””

Richard turned toward her.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I gave Marcus access to my email. He said he needed to retrieve a file from Daniel's old agreement.””

Richard slowly stood.

“Did you give him Daniel's password?””

“No. I gave him access to my account. But there was a shared business folder.””

Richard looked at the recording.

“Then Marcus could have obtained the original authorization from there.””

Vanessa nodded.

“But I never signed anything.””

Richard looked at her.

“Then we need proof.””

His phone vibrated.

A message from Peter.

*Peter:* Sir, there's another file. You need to see it immediately.

Richard opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Marcus.

The note read:

If Daniel asks questions, show him the meeting recording. He'll believe he approved the transfer. Vanessa will take the blame because she gave me access.

Vanessa read it.

Her face crumpled.

“He planned this.””

Richard nodded.

“And he planned for us to turn against each other.””

Then another line appeared at the bottom of the note.

If necessary, use the recording to force Daniel to sign the final release.

Richard stared at the words.

Vanessa whispered, “What final release?””

Richard looked at her.

“I think we're about to find out.””

His phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed Daniel's name.

Richard answered.

“Daniel?””

Daniel's voice was cold.

“I found the second document.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“What document?””

“The one Marcus sent after our meeting. It contains an authorization I never approved.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

Then he asked, “Daniel, have you ever signed a document transferring ownership of your company?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

May you like

Then he said something that made Richard's blood run cold.

“I just found one.””
