Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Broke

“Mommy, why are you kissing him?””

The little girl's voice cut through the afternoon air.

Vanessa froze.

Her lips were still inches from the man standing in front of her. His green cardigan was slightly crooked, and one hand remained resting against her waist. For a second, neither of them moved.

Then Vanessa turned.

Her daughter, Lily, stood on the sidewalk wearing a pink hoodie, her tiny hands gripping the straps of her backpack. Beside her stood Daniel, Vanessa's husband, dressed in a navy-blue suit.

Daniel looked at his wife.

Then at the unfamiliar man.

Then back at his wife.

“Vanessa, what is this?””

There was no shouting yet. No accusations. Just four words spoken by a man who suddenly seemed unable to recognize the woman he had married.

Vanessa stepped away from her lover.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

Daniel took one step forward.

“Explain what? That I just watched you kissing another man?””

The man in the green cardigan shifted uncomfortably.

“Look, Daniel, maybe we should all calm down.””

Daniel's eyes moved toward him.

“Stay out of this.””

He started walking toward the stranger.

But before Daniel could take another step, Vanessa rushed between them.

She raised both hands against her husband's chest, positioning herself directly in front of the man in the cardigan.

“Don't touch him!””

Daniel stopped.

His expression changed.

Not because Vanessa had stopped him.

Because of why she had stopped him.

He stared at her hands, then slowly raised his eyes to meet hers.

“Move.””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

“Vanessa, move out of my way.””

“I said don't touch him!””

Behind them, Lily began crying.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

Her daughter was trembling. Tears had already gathered beneath her eyes, and her lower lip quivered as she looked at the woman who was supposed to make her feel safe.

Daniel noticed.

He looked at Lily, then back at Vanessa.

“Are you serious right now?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel, you're making a scene.””

“A scene?”” Daniel repeated.

“Our daughter just watched you kissing another man, and you're worried about a scene?””

The stranger cleared his throat.

“Vanessa, perhaps I should leave.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“That's the first sensible thing anyone has said.””

But Vanessa tightened her position.

“Marcus isn't going anywhere because you're threatening him.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Marcus?””

The name landed between them like another betrayal.

He had never heard it before.

Or perhaps he had heard it once, buried inside one of Vanessa's countless explanations about late meetings, unexpected phone calls, and work emergencies.

Now the name had a face.

And that face was standing behind his wife.

Lily began crying harder.

“Daddy…”

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

He took a step toward his daughter.

Vanessa's hands dropped slightly, but she still didn't move away from Marcus.

Daniel looked at her one final time.

“You're choosing him over our daughter?””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

For a moment, she seemed ready to speak.

She looked at Lily.

The little girl was crying openly now, her cheeks wet, her eyes fixed on her mother.

But Vanessa didn't walk toward her.

She didn't kneel.

She didn't reach out.

Instead, she turned her head toward Marcus.

“Daniel, please don't make this worse.””

Daniel's face went still.

Something inside him seemed to settle.

He walked toward Lily and lowered himself onto one knee.

“Come here, princess.””

Lily ran into his arms.

“Daddy, why is Mommy doing that?””

Daniel wrapped one arm around her back and gently supported her legs with the other.

“It's okay, baby. I've got you.””

“Is Mommy leaving us?””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“No, sweetheart. You don't have to worry about anything right now.””

Lily wrapped both arms around his neck.

He lifted her securely, stood up, and turned toward Vanessa.

For the first time, he wasn't looking at her like a husband waiting for an explanation.

He was looking at her like a man who had finally understood something.

“You chose him,” Daniel said quietly.

“You'll lose everything.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Daniel, wait.””

He started walking.

“Daniel!””

She reached out as if she could catch his sleeve from several feet away.

But Daniel didn't stop.

Marcus remained behind her, silent, his hands tucked into his cardigan pockets.

Vanessa stood between the two men, watching the family she had built walk away without her.

After several steps, Daniel stopped.

He shifted Lily slightly higher in his arms.

Then he turned his face toward the camera.

“What happens to her now? Watch part two below.””

His eyes returned to the road ahead.

And he walked away with their daughter.

Vanessa was left standing outside the glass building.

Her purple dress moved in the afternoon breeze.

For the first time, Marcus wasn't holding her hand.

And for the first time, she seemed to realize that choosing someone could also mean losing someone else.

But the worst part hadn't happened yet.

May you like

Because Daniel wasn't going home to beg her to come back.

He was going home to collect the life she had just abandoned.
