Chapter 3: The Man at Her Door

Daniel stared at the security monitor.

Vanessa stood beneath the porch light, her purple dress replaced by a cream-colored coat. Her hair was tied back, and her face looked tired.

Marcus stood beside her.

The same man in the green cardigan.

Except now he was holding a black suitcase.

Daniel felt his jaw tighten.

He opened the front door but didn't step aside.

“Why is he here?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

“I asked why he's here.””

Marcus adjusted his grip on the suitcase.

“I think Vanessa and I should explain everything.””

Daniel gave him a cold look.

“You've already explained enough.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Can we please do this inside?””

“No.””

“Daniel, it's freezing out here.””

“Then you should have thought about that before bringing him to my house.””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Listen, I don't want any trouble.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Then stop bringing trouble to my front door.””

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Daniel, stop treating him like a criminal.””

Daniel looked at her.

The same words.

The same instinct.

Even now, she was protecting Marcus.

He let out a short breath.

“Is there anything you want to say about our daughter?””

Vanessa blinked.

“Of course I want to see Lily.””

“Did you ask about her when I called you?””

“I was upset.””

“So was she.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Daniel, I know today was difficult.””

“Difficult?””

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel looked past her at Marcus.

“Is that what you're calling it?””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“Please. I don't want to argue.””

“Then answer one question. Why did you bring him here?””

Vanessa glanced at Marcus.

He looked down at the suitcase.

Finally, she spoke.

“Marcus needs somewhere to stay tonight.””

Daniel didn't move.

For several seconds, the only sound was the wind moving through the trees beside the driveway.

Then he laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the situation had become too absurd to believe.

“You brought your lover to our family home because he needs somewhere to stay?””

“Daniel, it's temporary.””

“Temporary?””

“He has a situation with his apartment.””

Marcus cleared his throat.

“My landlord changed the locks after a disagreement. I couldn't get my things sorted out.””

Daniel stared at him.

“So you decided my house was the solution?””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“He has nowhere else to go.””

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“And what about Lily?””

Vanessa frowned.

“What about her?””

“She has a father who just spent the evening explaining why her mother wasn't there. She has a bedroom upstairs. She has a life in this house. And you think the urgent problem is finding your boyfriend somewhere to sleep?””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“Don't call him that.””

Daniel slowly nodded.

“Right. I forgot. He's the man you're protecting.””

Marcus shifted his weight.

“Daniel, maybe this isn't the right time.””

“Finally, we agree on something.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Can you at least let me see Lily?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“She is asleep.””

“I'm her mother.””

“Then start acting like it.””

Vanessa flinched.

“You can't keep her away from me.””

“I'm not discussing anything about our family at midnight on the doorstep with another man standing beside you.””

Marcus looked toward the street.

“Vanessa, maybe we should go.””

She turned sharply.

“No. I'm not leaving because Daniel wants to control everything.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Control?””

“Yes. You always have to decide everything. You decide when we talk, when we go out, what happens with money, everything.””

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Is that what this is about?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You never understood me.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Maybe I didn't.””

He remembered their first apartment.

The cheap furniture.

The leaking kitchen faucet.

The nights he worked overtime so Vanessa could finish her training course.

He remembered holding her hand in the hospital when Lily was born.

He remembered promising that their daughter would never have to wonder whether her parents loved her.

Now he was standing in his own doorway, listening to his wife explain why another man deserved a place inside their home.

Vanessa reached toward his arm.

“Daniel, please. We can fix this.””

He stepped back.

“Don't touch me.””

Her hand dropped.

For the first time, Marcus seemed to understand that the situation wasn't going the way Vanessa had expected.

He set the suitcase down.

“Vanessa, I really think we should leave.””

She turned toward him.

“Marcus, stop.””

Daniel watched the exchange.

Then he said something that made Vanessa go quiet.

“You know what hurts the most?””

She looked at him.

“It's not even that you kissed him. It's that Lily was standing right there, crying, and you still couldn't move away from him.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was confused.””

“No. You were clear.””

He pointed toward the driveway.

“Go.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, this is my home too.””

“I know.””

“Then how can you stand there and treat me like a stranger?””

Daniel looked at the suitcase.

“I'm not the one who brought a stranger into this family.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

“Mommy?””

All three adults turned.

Lily stood halfway down the stairs, wearing her pajamas. She was holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her eyes moved from Vanessa to Marcus.

Then to the suitcase.

“Mommy, are you coming home?””

Vanessa's expression softened immediately.

“Baby!””

She stepped forward.

But Lily didn't run toward her.

Instead, she looked at Marcus.

“Is that the man you were kissing?””

Vanessa stopped.

Daniel moved toward the staircase.

“Sweetheart, you should be sleeping.””

Lily held her rabbit tighter.

“Why is he here?””

Vanessa crouched slightly.

“Lily, Mommy wants to explain.””

“Are you going to live with him?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“No, sweetheart. It's not like that.””

“Then why did you leave with him?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He didn't answer for her.

Lily began to cry again.

“I don't want that man in our house.””

Marcus immediately picked up his suitcase.

“Vanessa, I'm going.””

But Vanessa caught his sleeve.

“Wait.””

Daniel saw it.

Lily saw it too.

The little girl stared at her mother's hand holding the man's arm.

Then she whispered something that made the entire doorway fall silent.

“Mommy, you said Daddy was your best friend.””

Vanessa slowly released Marcus.

Daniel walked up the stairs and lifted Lily into his arms.

“Come on, princess.””

“But Daddy…”

“I know.””

He carried her back toward her bedroom.

Behind him, Vanessa called out.

“Daniel! Please don't let her think I don't love her!””

He stopped at the top of the stairs.

He didn't turn around.

“Then you should have shown her.””

He disappeared into the hallway.

Downstairs, Marcus picked up his suitcase again.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, watching her husband carry their daughter away.

For the first time that night, she seemed uncertain about the man standing beside her.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Not now.””

“Actually, it needs to be now.””

She turned toward him.

“What?””

Marcus looked toward the staircase, then back at her.

“There is something I haven't told you about why I came here tonight.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

He took a breath.

Then he said the words she wasn't prepared to hear.

“Daniel isn't the only person who knows about us. And tomorrow, someone else is going to find out.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“Who?””

May you like

Marcus looked down at his suitcase.

“Your father.””
