[CHAPTER 8]

I got Ethan into the house without frightening him more than necessary.
That was harder than it sounds.
Children notice everything adults try to hide.
My voice was too controlled.
My movements were too quick.
The first thing Ethan asked was, “Is Claire coming?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are we locking the doors?”
“Because Sheriff Bennett asked us to.”
His face paled.
I knelt.
“He also has deputies coming.”
“Can Atlas come inside?”
The question almost made me smile.
“No.”
“What if she hurts him?”
“She won’t.”
“You don’t know.”
He was right.
I had spent too long telling him things were fine when I did not actually know.
So I changed my answer.
“Deputy Ruiz is staying near the barn.”
He nodded.
That was enough.
Within twenty minutes, two patrol vehicles were positioned near the property entrances.
Bennett arrived carrying a copy of the map.
The marks were handwritten in blue ink.
One X at Atlas’s stall.
One at Ruby’s.
One inside Ethan’s bedroom.
“What was she looking for?” I asked.
“Maybe Laura hid more evidence.”
“Then why Ethan’s room?”
Bennett looked at me.
“That’s what we need to find out.”
We searched it together.
Ethan stayed downstairs with Ruiz.
His room looked ordinary.
Books.
Toy trucks.
A model horse on the dresser.
One empty section on the wall where Laura’s photograph should have been.
I noticed it again and felt a new wave of anger.
Bennett checked the closet.
I looked beneath the bed.
Nothing.
Then I saw a small scratch on the baseboard behind Ethan’s nightstand.
I moved the furniture.
One panel had been removed and replaced.
Inside the narrow gap was a plastic envelope.
My heart began pounding.
“Bennett.”
He came over.
We documented it before opening.
Inside was not another letter.
It was a memory card.
A tiny one.
Wrapped in a note.
Daniel—
If the recorder fails, this is the full backup.
Please believe me before you believe her.
Laura.
I sat on Ethan’s bed.
For a moment, I could not move.
Laura had hidden evidence in our son’s room.
Not because she wanted to involve him.
Because she believed it was one place Claire would hesitate to search.
She had been wrong.
Claire had searched.
She had removed Laura’s photograph.
She had probably been looking for this card the entire time.
Bennett took it to the station.
An hour later, he called.
“Daniel, you need to come in.”
“What’s on it?”
“Audio files.”
“Laura?”
“And another voice.”
Claire.
I left Ethan with my mother, who had arrived after I finally told her everything.
My mother hugged him so hard he complained.
“Grandma, I need air.”
She immediately loosened her arms.
“Sorry.”
Then she cried into his hair.
I hated that he saw so many adults crying because of things done to him.
Before leaving, I crouched beside him.
“I’ll be back soon.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
He looked toward Grandma.
“She can stay?”
“As long as you want.”
He nodded.
At the sheriff’s station, Bennett played the recovered recording.
The first few seconds were muffled.
Then Laura’s voice.
“You took almost four hundred thousand dollars.”
Claire answered.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I have the records.”
“Records can disappear.”
My hands curled into fists.
Laura said, “Stay away from my family.”
Claire laughed.
“You think Daniel even notices what happens around him anymore?”
I felt the words like a knife.
Laura answered sharply.
“He works too much. That doesn’t make him stupid.”
“No. It makes him useful.”
Silence.
Then Laura said, “I’m calling the police tomorrow.”
Claire’s voice dropped.
“If you do that, you’ll regret it.”
“I already regret trusting you.”
The recording shifted.
Footsteps.
Then Claire said something so quietly Bennett had to increase the volume.
“Be careful driving tomorrow.”
I stopped breathing.
Laura responded, “What is that supposed to mean?”
Claire laughed again.
The recording ended.
I stared at Bennett.
“That’s a threat.”
“It certainly sounds like one.”
“Arrest her.”
“We are working on it.”
“Working?”
“Daniel, listen to me. That recording changes things substantially. But Claire is not currently at her sister’s house, and her attorney claims he doesn’t know where she is.”
“She ran.”
“It appears so.”
My phone rang.
My mother.
I answered immediately.
“What happened?”
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, Ethan is fine.”
My body tightened.
“Why would you start with that?”
“Because someone just drove past the ranch twice.”
“What car?”
“Dark SUV.”
“Claire’s?”
“I couldn’t see.”
I looked at Bennett.
He was already signaling Ruiz.
“Lock everything,” I told my mother.
“It is.”
“Stay away from the windows.”
“Daniel—”
“I’m coming home.”
Bennett drove.
Two patrol vehicles followed us.
When we reached Blackwood, the SUV was gone.
My mother opened the door.
Ethan ran to me.
“Dad!”
I lifted him.
“I’m here.”
Then he held something out.
“A lady put this at the door.”
Every muscle in my body froze.
“What lady?”
“I didn’t see her. Grandma found it.”
My mother handed me an envelope.
No stamp.
My name written across the front.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
Daniel,
You are destroying Ethan’s life because you cannot accept that Laura was unstable.
If you keep pushing this, everything comes out.
Everything.
Ask yourself why Laura hid evidence from you instead of trusting you.
Ask yourself what kind of husband that made you.
Then one final line.
You can still fix this.
Come alone to the old north pasture cabin tonight.
Bring Laura’s box.
Bennett read it.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“She wants the box.”
“She wants you isolated.”
“What if she has more evidence?”
“Then we get it legally.”
I stared at the note.
Claire knew where we lived.
She knew our routines.
She knew Ethan’s fears.
And somewhere out there, she believed she still had control.
Then Ethan tugged my sleeve.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“What does the note say?”
I folded it.
“Claire wants me to meet her.”
His eyes widened.
“Don’t go.”
“I won’t go alone.”
“No.”
He grabbed my arm.
“Don’t go at all.”
I looked at him.
He was not being childish.
He was warning me.
The way he had tried to warn me before.
This time, I listened.
“I won’t.”
That night, deputies watched the north pasture cabin from a distance.
Claire never appeared.
But at 11:17 p.m., something happened at the ranch.
The power went out.
Every light died at once.
The backup generator did not start.
Then Atlas began screaming.
May you like
And from somewhere inside the dark house, I heard Ethan shout one word.
“Claire!”
