Chapter 6: The Person Who Saw What I Didn’t

I read the message five times.

Then ten.

My first instinct was to call the number.

My second instinct was fear.

Because whoever sent it knew something.

Something about Noah.

Something about my wife.

Something I didn’t know.

I sat in the dark kitchen, staring at my phone.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

A few hours earlier, this had been the place where I believed my family was safe.

Now every room felt like it was holding a secret.

At 6:30 a.m., Noah woke up.

He walked into the kitchen dragging his dinosaur behind him.

“Daddy?””

I quickly locked my phone.

“Morning, buddy.””

He climbed into my lap.

“Did you sleep?””

I smiled sadly.

“A little.””

He touched my face.

“You look tired.””

The innocence of that sentence almost broke me.

“I’m okay.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Is Mommy gone?””

I nodded.

“She stayed somewhere else last night.””

His little fingers grabbed my shirt.

“Because of me?””

“No.””

I turned him toward me.

“Never because of you.””

He looked uncertain.

So I said it again.

“Never.””

After dropping Noah off at preschool, I drove to work.

But I didn’t go inside.

I sat in my truck and called the unknown number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

A woman.

“Hello?””

“Who is this?””

A pause.

“Your neighbor’s sister.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My name is Rachel. I used to work at the playground near your house.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What happened three months ago?””

She breathed out slowly.

“I wondered how long it would take before you asked.””

My stomach sank.

“Tell me.””

“It was a Tuesday afternoon.””

I closed my eyes.

Tuesday.

That was one of the days Tessa always took Noah to the park.

Rachel continued.

“I was walking my dog when I saw your son near the parking lot.””

“Near the parking lot?””

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“Where was Tessa?””

“That’s the problem.””

Silence.

“Rachel.””

“She wasn’t with him.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“I saw Noah alone.””

My hand shook.

“How long?””

“I don’t know exactly. Maybe five minutes. Maybe longer.””

“Why didn’t you call me?””

“I didn’t know you.””

I swallowed.

“What happened next?””

“I saw your wife running toward him.””

“Running?””

“Yes.””

Rachel paused.

“She wasn’t looking scared because she lost him.””

My jaw tightened.

“Then why?””

“She looked angry.””

I looked out the windshield.

The parking lot suddenly felt miles away.

“What happened after?””

“She grabbed his arm.””

“How hard?””

Another pause.

“Hard enough that he cried.””

I closed my eyes.

My son.

My little boy.

Rachel continued.

“But that’s not the part that bothered me most.””

“What was?””

“She leaned down and whispered something.””

“What?””

“I couldn’t hear everything.””

My voice became urgent.

“But?””

“I heard one sentence.””

The air left my lungs.

“What sentence?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She said, ‘If Daddy finds out, you know what happens.’”

I gripped the steering wheel.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

The answer surprised me.

“What?””

“I came to your house.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

My forehead creased.

“I don’t remember that.””

“I know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because your wife answered the door.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She told me you already knew.””

The world went quiet.

“She said you approved of her discipline.””

I felt sick.

“I never said that.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I saw your face when I met you yesterday.””

I froze.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“At the grocery store.””

My mind raced.

Rachel continued.

“You looked like someone who had just discovered the person living in your house wasn’t who you thought.””

I looked down.

My wedding ring caught the sunlight.

The same ring I had worn while defending a woman who had been hiding things from me.

“Rachel,” I whispered.

“Why contact me now?””

Her answer came immediately.

“Because yesterday I saw Noah.””

“And?””

“He saw me.””

I waited.

“He grabbed my hand.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?””

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“He asked me if I was the lady who tried to tell Daddy.””

I closed my eyes.

“And then?””

“He said something I’ll never forget.””

The silence stretched.

“What did he say?””

Rachel whispered:

“He said, ‘Daddy didn’t believe her.’”

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Because that was the truth.

I had been there.

I had been the person who should have protected him.

And I hadn’t.

Before I could answer, Rachel spoke again.

“But Marcus…”

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“I found something after I left your house.””

My heart raced.

“What did you find?””

“A hidden box.””

I sat up.

“Where?””

“In your wife’s closet.””

The line went silent for a moment.

May you like

Then Rachel said:

“And I think you need to see what’s inside before Tessa gets home.””
