Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

I followed my father out of the guest room before I even realized I was moving.

“Dad, wait.””

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell me everything.

Then he looked at my face and hesitated.

“You shouldn’t have to carry this.””

I shook my head.

“I’ve been carrying something for years.””

My words surprised both of us.

My father lowered his eyes.

I had never spoken to him like that before.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because I was afraid of losing him.

“Please,” I whispered.

“Tell me what’s happening.””

He looked back at Claire’s phone.

The screen was still glowing.

That one message sat there like a warning.

I told you she would eventually push him away.

My father walked into the kitchen and placed the phone on the counter.

“Your stepmother has been planning something.””

“What kind of something?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I don’t know yet.””

“You looked scared.””

“I am.””

The honesty in his voice made my chest tighten.

My father was the person everyone went to when things went wrong.

He fixed broken doors.

He handled emergencies.

He stayed calm when everyone else panicked.

Seeing fear in his eyes made everything feel real.

He picked up the phone again.

“I need to read the rest.””

I stood beside him.

The messages were between Claire and someone saved as “M.””

The conversation went back several months.

My father scrolled slowly.

The first message that caught my attention was from Claire.

“She’s older now. He’s becoming closer to her again.””

The reply came quickly.

“Then speed up the plan.””

My stomach turned.

“What plan?””

My father kept scrolling.

Another message appeared.

Claire had written:

“He still thinks she’s innocent. He doesn’t see what she’s doing.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked confused too.

Then another message appeared.

M replied:

“You know what needs to happen. Once she leaves, everything becomes easier.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“Leave?””

My father didn’t speak.

He kept reading.

The next messages were worse.

Claire had complained about me.

About how I was becoming “too important.””

About how my father spent too much time with me.

About how she believed I was “standing between her and the future she deserved.””

Future?

I looked at my father.

“What future?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he had reached the next message.

A message that changed his expression completely.

Claire wrote:

“I can’t believe the account is still protected. I thought after all these years he would finally trust me.””

My father froze.

“What account?””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Dad…”

His jaw tightened.

“There’s an account?””

Before he could answer, the phone rang.

Both of us jumped.

It was Claire.

My father stared at the screen.

Then he answered.

“What?””

Her voice immediately came through.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

“There’s nothing to talk about.””

“You saw my phone.””

Silence.

My father looked at me.

“You knew?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You left it here on purpose?””

Her voice changed.

“I wanted you to see.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

“I wanted you angry.””

The words made no sense.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Claire said:

“Because you were never going to listen to me otherwise.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“You were trying to remove my daughter from my life.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

Another pause.

Then:

“From losing everything.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You need to explain.””

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

“Then explain now.””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Daniel, if you found those messages, then you already know too much.””

A chill went through me.

My father stood straighter.

“What does that mean?””

Claire didn’t respond.

Instead, she said:

“You should ask your daughter what she knows.””

Then the call ended.

My father stared at the phone.

I felt my heart beating faster.

“What was that?””

He looked at me.

“Emma…”

The way he said my name scared me.

“What?””

He sat down.

“Did Claire ever say anything strange to you?””

I thought back.

Every argument.

Every comment.

Every time she made me feel like I was unwanted.

Then I remembered something.

Something small.

Something I had forgotten because I thought it didn’t matter.

“She asked me a question once.””

My father leaned forward.

“When?””

“About six months ago.””

“What question?””

I swallowed.

“She asked if I knew what would happen if something happened to you.””

My father went completely still.

“What exactly did she say?””

I closed my eyes.

“She said…”

The memory came back clearly.

Claire standing in the kitchen.

Smiling.

Pretending to be interested.

“Emma, you’re old enough to understand that families change.””

I remembered the way she touched my hair.

The way it felt fake.

“She asked me if I would still be okay if I had to live somewhere else.””

My father stood up.

“She said that?””

I nodded.

“I thought she was just talking about college.””

His face changed.

Not anger this time.

Fear.

Because suddenly we both understood.

Claire wasn’t trying to remove me from a picture.

She had been preparing me for a life without my father.

And she had been doing it quietly.

For years.

My father grabbed his jacket.

“Where are you going?””

“To find out who M is.””

“And then?””

He looked at me.

“For the first time, I’m going to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to hurting you.””

But before he could reach the door, his phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Not from Claire.

From an unknown number.

My father opened it.

His face changed instantly.

Because the message contained a photo.

A photo of me.

Taken outside my school.

May you like

And underneath it were five words:

“She is becoming a problem.””
