Chapter 8: The Past She Buried
Caroline didn’t speak for several seconds.
The café noise continued around us.
People talking.
Coffee machines running.
Chairs moving across the floor.
But at our table, everything stopped.
My father ended the call slowly.
“What records?”” I asked.
Caroline looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He stared at her.
“Your sister said she found them.””
Caroline’s hands started trembling.
“I need to go.””
She grabbed her purse.
But my father stopped her.
“No.””
She froze.
“You don’t get to walk away every time the truth gets close.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Emily, this isn’t what you think.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me what it is.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was becoming a familiar pattern.
A week later, we learned the truth.
Caroline’s sister, Rebecca, came to our house carrying an old box.
Not dramatic.
Not mysterious.
Just a simple cardboard box filled with papers.
But the moment Caroline saw it, she looked terrified.
“I told you to throw those away.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“I couldn’t.””
My father stood beside me.
“What are these?””
Rebecca looked at Caroline.
“Things she never wanted anyone to know.””
Caroline closed her eyes.
“Rebecca.””
“No.””
Her sister’s voice was calm.
“You don’t get to keep rewriting people’s lives.””
I watched Caroline carefully.
For the first time, I saw someone who wasn’t in control.
Rebecca opened the box.
Inside were old letters.
Photographs.
Documents.
She handed one to my father.
“Caroline grew up in a home where everyone left.””
I looked at her.
Rebecca continued.
“Our parents divorced when she was young. Then our mother moved away. Then our father disappeared.””
Caroline looked down.
“I know what it feels like.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Then she looked at her sister.
“But you turned that fear into something else.””
The room became quiet.
My father looked at the papers.
“What does this have to do with Emily?””
Rebecca answered.
“Caroline became convinced that people leaving meant they didn’t love her.””
I felt a strange sadness.
Not because I excused what she did.
But because I finally understood where the fear came from.
Rebecca continued.
“She always said if she could keep people close enough, they couldn’t abandon her.””
My father looked at Caroline.
“So you tried to keep Emily from leaving.””
Caroline wiped her eyes.
“I thought if she stayed nearby, we could still be a family.””
I shook my head.
“Caroline, I wasn’t leaving you.””
She looked at me.
“I know that now.””
“No.””
I took a breath.
“You don’t.””
She looked confused.
“I wasn’t leaving because I didn’t love you.””
Her eyes filled.
“I wanted to go to college because I had dreams.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know.””
“And you almost took that away.””
“I know.””
This time, her voice broke.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my father asked the question that had been bothering him.
“Why didn’t you just tell us you were afraid?””
Caroline looked at him.
“Because I was embarrassed.””
“Embarrassed?””
She nodded.
“I thought if I admitted I was scared, everyone would see me as weak.””
My father sighed.
“And instead, you hurt everyone.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
That was the first honest answer she had given.
Not an excuse.
Not a justification.
Just the truth.
But honesty didn’t erase consequences.
My father told her she needed to move out temporarily while they figured out the next steps.
Caroline didn’t fight.
She simply nodded.
Before she left, she stopped at the doorway.
“Emily.””
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was quiet.
Small.
But real.
I didn’t know if I was ready to forgive her.
Maybe I never would be.
But I nodded.
“Thank you for saying it.””
After she left, I stood by the window watching her car disappear.
My father came beside me.
“You okay?””
I thought about it.
“I think so.””
And I meant it.
Because for the first time, my future felt like mine again.
A month later, I received the official scholarship package.
Everything was confirmed.
My dream was happening.
But on the day I was preparing to celebrate, my father received one final message from Michael.
A message about Caroline’s old documents.
A message that revealed one more secret.
May you like
Because there was something she had done years earlier that even Rebecca didn’t know about.
And it could change whether she ever came back into our lives.
