Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Silence
Daniel picked up the second envelope.
His fingers trembled slightly as he removed the document.
At the top was the clinic's letterhead.
Below it were several paragraphs of medical notes, a date, and a section identifying the person who had provided additional information.
Daniel read the name.
Then he read it again.
His face lost color.
"Diane.""
She closed her eyes.
"Please.""
"Why is this person's name here?""
"I didn't know how to explain it.""
"How did this person become involved in Maya's medical care?""
Diane looked toward their daughter.
Maya was watching them.
"Mom, who is it?""
Diane couldn't answer.
Dr. Reynolds took the document back.
"Mr. Carter, I want to clarify that the presence of a name on this form does not establish what role that person played. We need to verify the circumstances with the clinic.""
Daniel nodded.
But his attention remained fixed on Diane.
"You knew this information was in here.""
"Yes.""
"And you deliberately didn't give us this envelope when the doctor asked for the previous records.""
Diane looked down.
"Yes.""
Daniel stepped away from the counter.
He felt as though the floor beneath him had shifted.
Maya looked between her parents.
"Dad?""
He immediately turned.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"What's happening?""
Daniel forced himself to sit beside her.
"Some things are being checked. The doctors are making sure they have all the information.""
"Is someone in trouble?""
"No one is going to blame you for anything.""
Maya looked at her mother.
"Are you hiding something about me?""
Diane started crying.
"I never wanted you to feel alone.""
"But I did.""
The simple sentence broke through Diane's composure.
She covered her face.
Dr. Patel approached Maya.
"Would you like to speak with me privately again?""
Maya nodded.
"Yes, please.""
Daniel stood.
"I'll wait outside.""
He looked at Diane.
"You can stay if Maya wants you to.""
Maya shook her head.
"I want Dad outside with me.""
Diane lowered her hands.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
"Of course.""
He followed Maya's wishes, leaving the room with her nurse and the doctor.
Diane remained alone.
For the first time that day, nobody was asking her questions.
But the silence was no longer protecting her.
It was exposing everything she had avoided.
About twenty minutes later, Daniel returned with Dr. Patel.
Maya was resting.
Her pain had eased slightly after the medical team provided treatment, although she remained under observation.
Dr. Reynolds joined them with the updated records.
"We've reviewed the additional information and spoken with the previous clinic," he said.
Daniel stood.
"And?""
"The records confirm that the first visit included a discussion about the possibility of pregnancy. However, the clinic did not have sufficient information to establish all the details at that time.""
Daniel looked toward Diane.
She was staring at the floor.
Dr. Reynolds continued.
"The additional document also identifies a person who was contacted during the appointment process.""
"Who contacted him?"" Daniel asked.
"That is one of the details we're still verifying.""
Diane suddenly spoke.
"I did.""
Daniel turned.
"You contacted him?""
Diane nodded.
"I called him before the appointment.""
"Why?""
"Because I needed help.""
"Help with what?""
Diane looked at Maya.
"She was frightened. I didn't know how to handle the situation. I thought he might know where to take her.""
Daniel stared at his wife.
"You involved another person in this without telling me?""
"I thought it was the fastest way to get her seen.""
"Then why didn't you tell me afterward?""
Diane wiped her cheeks.
"Because he asked me not to.""
Daniel looked confused.
"He asked you not to?""
Diane nodded.
"After the appointment, he said we should wait until we knew more before telling you.""
"Who does he think he is?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why did you listen to him?""
Diane's voice broke.
"Because I was scared, Daniel!""
Maya opened her eyes.
"Mom?""
Diane immediately lowered her voice.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
Maya looked toward the doctor.
"Can I ask what the tests show?""
Dr. Reynolds approached.
"We have some preliminary information, but we're waiting for confirmation of several details. The pregnancy is being assessed, and we're investigating another possible explanation for your abdominal pain.""
"Is that why it hurts so much?""
"It may be contributing. We need the additional results to be certain.""
Daniel nodded.
"Do whatever you need to do.""
Dr. Patel checked the chart.
"We'll continue monitoring her closely.""
As the doctors prepared to leave, Daniel called after Dr. Reynolds.
"One more question.""
The physician turned.
"Yes?""
"That person listed in the records. Does he have anything to do with the pregnancy?""
Dr. Reynolds paused.
"I cannot determine that from the paperwork alone. We need reliable information, and we won't make assumptions.""
Daniel looked toward Diane.
She had become completely still again.
He lowered his voice.
"Then I need my wife to tell me what happened.""
Diane stood.
"Daniel, I promise I can explain.""
"When?""
"Now.""
Maya turned her head.
"Please don't argue.""
Daniel looked at her.
"We're not going to argue in front of you.""
He took a breath and faced Diane.
"Tell me who he is.""
Diane's lips trembled.
"His name is Michael.""
Daniel frowned.
"Michael who?""
She whispered the surname.
Daniel froze.
It was a name he knew.
A name connected to someone who had been present at family gatherings, someone who had known Maya since she was little, someone he had trusted enough to welcome into his home.
He looked at Diane.
"No.""
She began crying.
"Daniel—"
"No. Don't tell me that.""
Maya slowly raised her head.
"Dad, who is Michael?""
Daniel couldn't answer.
He was staring at his wife.
"Tell me the truth," he whispered.
"Was he the person you took her to see?""
Diane nodded.
"Yes.""
"Was he the person who arranged the appointment?""
"Yes.""
Daniel looked at the medical documents.
Then he looked at Maya.
"Did you know him?""
Maya shook her head.
"I only know his name.""
Diane stepped forward.
"Daniel, there's something you need to understand about why I contacted him.""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What?""
Diane looked at the door.
Then she turned back toward her husband.
"Because Michael was the one who first told me that something might be wrong.""
Daniel stared at her.
"When?""
Diane swallowed.
"Before Maya ever told me she was hurting.""
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly turned toward the ultrasound monitor.
Then back to Diane.
"What do you mean he knew before we did?""
Diane opened her mouth.
But this time, Daniel didn't wait for another explanation.
He picked up his phone.
"Give me his number.""
Diane looked terrified.
"Daniel, please don't call him.""
He stared at her.
"Why not?""
She whispered:
"Because he already knows we're here.""
May you like
And before Daniel could ask how that was possible, his phone began ringing.
The name on the screen was Michael.
