Chapter 8: The Name on the Appointment Form

"Who accompanied Maya to the clinic?""

Daniel repeated the doctor's question.

Diane stared at the floor.

"I did.""

Dr. Reynolds nodded.

"According to the records, another adult was also listed as a contact.""

Daniel looked down at the form.

There was a name written beneath Diane's.

He read it.

Then he looked up.

"Who is this?""

Diane didn't answer.

Daniel held the paper out.

"Diane. Who is this person?""

Maya turned toward her mother.

"Mom?""

Diane took a shaky breath.

"He's someone I know.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Someone you know?""

"Yes.""

"Why is his name on our daughter's medical paperwork?""

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Dr. Reynolds stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, we should be careful not to make assumptions based on an administrative contact field. The clinic has confirmed the appointment details, but we're still verifying the information.""

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

"Fine. But I want to know why another adult's name appears on a medical record involving my daughter.""

Diane sat down.

"I didn't expect this to happen.""

"What didn't you expect?""

She looked at Maya.

"Can we please talk outside?""

Maya shook her head.

"No.""

Diane froze.

Maya's voice was weak, but clear.

"You keep asking to talk outside whenever Dad asks you something.""

"Sweetheart, this is complicated.""

"Then explain it simply.""

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He hadn't realized how much she had been carrying alone.

She had been asking questions for weeks, apparently attending appointments without telling him, and now she was lying in a hospital bed while the adults around her struggled to speak plainly.

He moved closer.

"Maya, you don't have to listen if you don't want to.""

"I want to know.""

Diane wiped her cheeks.

"The man listed on the form is someone who helped me arrange the appointment.""

"Who?"" Daniel asked.

Diane whispered the name.

Daniel recognized it.

His expression changed immediately.

"Why was he involved?""

"He helped me find the clinic.""

"Why couldn't I take her?""

"Because Maya didn't want you to know.""

Daniel looked at Maya.

She lowered her eyes.

"Is that true, sweetheart?""

Maya nodded.

"I was afraid you'd be disappointed.""

Daniel knelt beside her bed.

"Look at me.""

She slowly raised her face.

"Nothing about this makes me love you less. Nothing.""

Maya began crying.

"I didn't know how to tell you.""

Daniel took her hand.

"You never have to earn the right to tell me something difficult.""

Diane turned away.

For a moment, the room was filled only with the sound of Maya crying.

Dr. Patel gave the family time before speaking.

"We need to focus on the medical situation. Maya's health is the priority, and there are still tests we need to complete.""

Daniel nodded.

"What's next?""

"We're arranging additional imaging and laboratory tests. The results will help us understand the source of her abdominal pain and determine the safest treatment.""

"How long?""

"Some results may be available relatively soon. Others will take longer.""

Maya looked toward the doctor.

"Can I ask something?""

"Of course.""

"Does the ultrasound mean I'm definitely pregnant?""

Dr. Patel answered gently.

"The images strongly suggest pregnancy, but we'll confirm the findings through the appropriate tests.""

Maya looked down.

Daniel rubbed her hand.

"Whatever the results, we'll handle it together.""

Diane moved closer.

"Can I sit beside her?""

Maya didn't answer immediately.

Then she nodded.

Diane pulled the chair closer.

She reached for Maya's hand, but stopped before touching it.

"Can I?""

Maya looked at her.

"Okay.""

Diane held her daughter's fingers carefully.

"I'm sorry.""

Maya didn't respond.

"I should have listened when you told me you were hurting. I should have told your father about the appointment. I should have made sure you received the follow-up care.""

Her voice broke.

"I was trying to control something I didn't understand.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?""

Diane swallowed.

"Because I was afraid of what everyone would think.""

"Everyone?""

Diane nodded.

"I was afraid of the family finding out. I was afraid of the questions. I was afraid of how Maya's future might change.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"So you decided that keeping secrets was better than getting her help?""

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like our daughter was left to deal with this alone.""

Diane lowered her head.

Maya slowly withdrew her hand.

"Mom?""

Diane looked up.

"Yes?""

"Did you tell the clinic everything?""

Diane went still.

"What do you mean?""

Maya looked at the paperwork.

"The doctor asked questions about my medical history. Did you tell them everything I told you?""

Diane's eyes shifted toward Daniel.

Then back to Maya.

"Not everything.""

Daniel stood.

"What did you leave out?""

Diane began to cry again.

"I didn't think it was relevant.""

Dr. Reynolds looked up from the folder.

"Mrs. Carter, we need accurate information to provide appropriate care. If there is anything you haven't disclosed, now is the time to tell us.""

Diane nodded.

Then she reached into her purse.

She removed a second envelope, smaller than the first.

Daniel stared at it.

"What is that?""

Diane placed it on the counter.

"Something I received after the first appointment.""

Dr. Reynolds opened it carefully.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Dr. Patel.

They exchanged a brief glance.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"What?""

Dr. Reynolds looked toward him.

"This document contains information that wasn't included in the first set of records.""

Daniel looked at Diane.

"Why did you keep that separate?""

Diane whispered something.

"Because I was afraid you'd recognize the name.""

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

"What name?""

Diane pointed toward the bottom of the document.

May you like

Daniel stepped forward.

And when he saw the name printed there, he realized the secret might involve someone much closer to their family than he had ever imagined.
