Chapter 5: The Second Finding
Dr. Reynolds closed the folder and pulled his chair closer to the family.
"I want everyone to remain calm," he said.
"We have identified something that needs additional investigation.""
Daniel looked at the doctor.
"Is it connected to the pregnancy?""
"It may be. I don't want to speculate until we've completed the necessary assessment.""
Maya tightened her grip on the blanket.
"Is something wrong with my baby?""
The doctor paused.
"We're still determining what the images mean. Right now, my priority is making sure you're safe and that we understand the source of your pain.""
Daniel moved beside her.
"You're going to be okay, sweetheart.""
Maya looked at him.
"How do you know?""
He struggled to answer.
"I don't know everything yet. But you're not facing this alone.""
Sarah adjusted the pillow beneath Maya's head.
"Let's keep you comfortable while the doctor reviews the next steps.""
Diane remained silent.
Daniel noticed that she had moved away from the bed.
She was now standing beside the counter, looking at the floor.
He approached her.
"Come outside with me.""
"Daniel, I don't think—"
"Two minutes. That's all I'm asking.""
Diane looked toward Maya.
"I should stay with her.""
"Sarah is here. The doctor is here. Come with me.""
For a moment, Diane didn't move.
Then she followed him into the corridor.
The hospital door closed behind them.
Daniel turned immediately.
"Start talking.""
Diane folded her arms.
"I don't know what you want me to say.""
"I want to know why our daughter asked whether you already knew she was pregnant.""
Diane looked away.
"She misunderstood something.""
"What did she misunderstand?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You're her mother. You brought her into this world. You've been the person she comes to when she's frightened. And today, when she was crying in the kitchen, you told her it was nothing.""
"I was trying to keep her calm.""
"She could barely stand.""
"I didn't know it was this serious.""
"Then why did you look at that ultrasound screen like you'd seen it before?""
Diane pressed her fingers against her forehead.
"Daniel, please don't do this here.""
"Where would you prefer we do it? At home? Where you can tell me everything is fine?""
She flinched.
He lowered his voice.
"Did Maya tell you something before today?""
Diane didn't answer.
"Did she tell you she might be pregnant?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
Daniel took a step backward.
"Oh, my God.""
"Daniel—"
"She told you?""
Diane quickly shook her head.
"Not exactly.""
"What does that mean?""
"She asked me some questions.""
"What questions?""
Diane looked down at her wedding ring.
"She wanted to know whether certain changes in her body were normal.""
Daniel stared at her.
"And what did you tell her?""
"I told her we should talk.""
"When?""
Diane hesitated.
"Later.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Later?""
"I was trying to find the right moment.""
"You had time to find the right moment while she was suffering?""
"I didn't know what to do!""
Her voice echoed through the corridor.
A passing nurse glanced at them.
Diane lowered her voice.
"I was scared, Daniel.""
"So was she.""
Diane began crying.
"I know.""
"No. I don't think you do.""
He looked through the narrow window in the door.
Maya was lying quietly while Sarah checked her blood pressure.
Daniel's expression softened for a moment.
Then he turned back to his wife.
"Did you arrange an appointment for her?""
Diane looked at him.
He noticed the hesitation immediately.
"That's what she meant, isn't it?""
"Daniel, I—"
"Did you take her somewhere?""
Diane opened her mouth, but a voice interrupted them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carter?""
Dr. Reynolds stood in the doorway.
"Could you both come back inside, please?""
Daniel stepped past his wife.
"What happened?""
"We've reviewed the images and discussed the examination with our specialist team. There are several things we need to clarify.""
Diane followed him into the room.
Maya looked up as soon as they entered.
"Dad?""
"I'm here.""
"Are you angry with Mom?""
Daniel looked at his daughter.
He wanted to tell her that nothing in the world mattered more than her safety.
Instead, he pulled his chair beside her.
"I'm worried about you, sweetheart. That's all.""
Maya nodded slowly.
Dr. Reynolds placed the folder on the counter.
"I'd like to ask Maya a few questions privately, with a female member of our clinical team present. We need to understand her medical history and make sure she feels comfortable discussing anything relevant.""
Daniel immediately agreed.
"Whatever she needs.""
Diane nodded too quickly.
"Of course.""
The doctor looked toward Sarah.
"Could you assist?""
Sarah approached Maya.
"Would you like your parents to wait outside for a few minutes?""
Maya glanced at Daniel.
He squeezed her hand.
"Whatever makes you comfortable.""
Maya took a breath.
"Okay.""
Daniel stood and moved toward the door.
Diane followed.
But before leaving, Maya called softly.
"Mom?""
Diane stopped.
"Yes?""
"Please don't lie to me.""
The words were barely audible.
Yet they seemed to take all the air out of the room.
Diane stared at her daughter.
"I won't.""
Maya held her gaze.
"You said that before.""
Diane's face crumpled.
Daniel looked at her.
Then the door closed.
Inside the examination room, Sarah pulled a chair closer to Maya.
"Can you tell me about the appointment your mother mentioned?""
Maya looked at the closed door.
May you like
Then she whispered something that made Sarah stop writing.
"She told me I wasn't supposed to tell Dad.""
