Chapter 9: The Man Diane Buried With Her Lies

The name stayed in the air.

Olivia’s father.

Three words.

But they changed everything.

Jason stared at the photo on my phone like he was looking at something impossible.

“You’re sure?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed her the phone.

She studied the picture carefully.

Then her face changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

“That’s him.””

Jason looked at her.

“You know him?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The room became silent again.

It felt like that was all this family ever did.

Silence.

Secrets.

People waiting for someone else to finally say the truth.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

Jason looked at me.

“My father.””

I swallowed.

The man Diane claimed was gone.

The man whose absence had shaped Jason’s entire life.

The man whose daughter had been erased.

“He’s alive?””

Jason nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You think?””

Jason ran a hand through his hair.

“I found records.””

“What records?””

He looked at the photo.

“Payments.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Payments from who?””

“From my mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood what that meant.

Diane hadn’t just hidden a person.

She had maintained a secret.

Jason took the phone from my hand and looked closer.

“When did this photo get taken?””

I checked the message.

“Three days ago.””

Rachel frowned.

“Three days ago?””

“Yes.””

She looked worried.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at Jason.

“Because your father disappeared over thirty years ago.””

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“People disappear.””

“Not completely.””

Rachel took a breath.

“Especially not someone who had legal records, bank accounts, and a family.””

I looked at the picture again.

Diane standing beside a man who looked older but familiar.

A man who had been turned into a ghost.

A man whose existence could destroy the story Diane had spent decades building.

Then I noticed something.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

I pointed at the folder in the man’s hand.

“What is that?””

Rachel leaned closer.

“A legal file.””

Jason’s expression changed.

“What kind of legal file?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

Same number.

This time, only one sentence.

*Ask Diane why she needed your daughter’s signature.*

My blood ran cold.

“My daughter’s signature?””

Jason immediately took the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel’s face became serious.

“Lily is too young to legally sign anything.””

“Exactly.””

Jason looked at me.

“Unless…”

He stopped.

Because we were thinking the same thing.

Unless someone was trying to use another document.

A fake.

A transfer.

A way around us.

I looked toward the dining room.

Diane was gone.

“She left.””

Jason looked at the door.

Then his face changed.

“She didn’t leave because she was scared.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She left because she had a plan.””

The words made my stomach twist.

For the first time that night, I saw Jason not as a son.

Not as a husband.

But as someone finally understanding the person who had controlled his entire life.

Rachel picked up the folder Diane had abandoned.

“There’s something here.””

She opened it carefully.

Inside were documents.

Old papers.

New papers.

A mixture of everything Diane had been hiding.

Rachel flipped through them.

Then stopped.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

She handed the document to Jason.

He read it.

And his expression changed.

“What is this?””

I looked over his shoulder.

It was a medical document.

A psychological evaluation.

But the name at the top wasn’t Diane.

It wasn’t Jason.

It was Olivia.

My heart dropped.

“What did she do?””

Rachel took the paper back.

“This was created after Olivia entered foster care.””

Jason looked confused.

“Why would my mother have it?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because she requested it.””

Silence.

“She wanted records showing Olivia was unstable.””

Jason stared.

“But she wasn’t.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“She was a child reacting to trauma.””

I felt sick.

Diane hadn’t just hurt people.

She had rewritten their pain into evidence against them.

Jason sat down.

“I defended her.””

Nobody responded.

“I defended her for my entire life.””

I looked at him.

“Jason.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His eyes filled.

“I told you she was just difficult.””

A pause.

“I told you she meant well.””

He looked toward Lily.

“And when she hurt our daughter…”

His voice broke.

“I asked you not to make it bigger.””

The guilt on his face was unbearable.

But guilt alone wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

I sat beside him.

Not to comfort him.

To make him understand.

“You need to know something.””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t about you forgiving yourself.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“You don’t.””

He looked down.

“Because Lily doesn’t need a father who feels bad after something happens.””

A tear fell from his eye.

“She needs one who acts before it happens.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

This time, I believed him.

Not because he said the right words.

Because for once, he wasn’t defending himself.

He was listening.

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Brooke stood there.

She looked terrified.

“What happened?””

Jason stood.

“Brooke?””

She looked at the papers.

Then at us.

“I found something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She walked inside holding an old box.

“I found it in Mom’s bedroom.””

Diane’s bedroom.

Jason stared.

“Why were you in there?””

Brooke looked ashamed.

“Because I knew she had more.””

She placed the box on the table.

“I was tired of being afraid.””

Rachel opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Old documents.

And one envelope.

Jason recognized the handwriting immediately.

He picked it up.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the envelope.

“This is my father’s handwriting.””

Everyone went silent.

“But Rachel said he disappeared.””

Jason nodded.

“He did.””

He turned the envelope over.

There was a date.

A date from six months after Diane told everyone he was gone.

Rachel looked stunned.

“That’s impossible.””

Jason opened it.

Inside was a letter.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Rachel.

She read it.

Then she looked at Diane’s empty chair.

“She knew.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at us.

“Diane knew he was alive.””

Jason looked devastated.

“Why would she hide that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel found another page inside.

A legal agreement.

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

I asked.

She slowly turned it around.

The title was clear.

*Custody and Asset Control Agreement.*

Jason grabbed it.

His hands shook.

“This…”

He looked at me.

“This was created before Lily was born.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

He looked at the signature page.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t planning to take Lily away.””

I stared.

“Then what?””

Jason looked at the document.

“She was planning to control everything before Lily even existed.””

Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched her expression.

Then her face went serious.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“No, we’re still at the condo.””

Another pause.

Then she looked at me.

“Emma.””

I stood.

“What?””

Rachel lowered the phone.

“The police are outside.””

My heart jumped.

“Why?””

She looked toward the door.

“Because Diane Bennett just filed a report.””

Jason frowned.

“A report for what?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“She claims you assaulted her.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt the room spin.

“She did what?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She says you attacked her during the birthday party.””

I stared.

After everything.

After the video.

After the documents.

After the truth.

Diane was doing what she had always done.

Changing the story.

But then Rachel added one more sentence.

A sentence that made me understand Diane’s real plan.

“She also claims you are an unsafe mother.””

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly, I understood.

May you like

Diane wasn’t trying to win the argument.

She was trying to take Lily.
