Chapter 8: The Voice Hidden in the Wall
Nobody spoke after we saw the message.
The words were small.
Almost invisible.
Like whoever wrote them didn’t want anyone to find them.
But someone had wanted them found.
Eventually.
Someday.
Richard reached out and touched the carved letters.
His hand shook.
“She wrote this.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“You believe that?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked down.
“Because Lily always did this.””
“What?””
“She knew people ignored her.””
His voice became quieter.
“So she left notes.””
I looked around the room.
A child’s bedroom.
A hidden box.
A message behind the wall.
Everything Lily had tried to say had been buried.
Until May somehow remembered it.
The detective searched the area around the hidden panel.
“There may be more.””
Daniel looked at him.
“More what?””
“Evidence.””
The word felt heavy.
Richard stepped away.
“I need to talk to Vanessa.””
Detective Harris immediately stopped him.
“Not alone.””
Richard looked angry.
“She lied to me for three years.””
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice rose.
“That was my family.””
Nobody responded.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn’t just an investigation.
This was a betrayal.
A few hours later, Vanessa arrived at the mansion.
She walked in wearing sunglasses and a perfect coat.
She looked exactly like she had at the party.
Calm.
Controlled.
Like nothing had happened.
Until she saw the police.
Then she stopped.
Richard stood in the living room.
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
“Richard.””
He stared at her.
“Why?””
That was all he said.
One word.
But Vanessa understood.
Her face changed.
“Why what?””
“Why did you lie?””
She looked toward Detective Harris.
Then back at Richard.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Richard laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe it.
“You told police Lily ran away.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I told them what I believed.””
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You told them what protected you.””
The room became tense.
Vanessa looked at me.
“This is because of your daughter?””
I immediately stepped forward.
“Do not blame my child.””
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“I’m not blaming her.””
She looked toward May.
“I’m saying children misunderstand things.””
May held my hand tighter.
But she didn’t look scared.
She looked at Vanessa.
Then she said:
“You’re the lady.””
Everyone froze.
Vanessa stared.
“What?””
May pointed.
“You’re the lady who made Lily cry.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
So did Richard.
He whispered:
“You remember.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know what this child thinks she knows.””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“You knew about the purple door.””
Silence.
“You knew about the bracelet.””
More silence.
“You knew about the room.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward him.
And that was the moment.
The moment she realized she had made a mistake.
Because she had never been told about the room.
Not by the police.
Not by Richard.
Not by anyone.
Richard noticed.
“How did you know?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Mrs. Whitmore.””
She looked at him.
“You need to answer the question.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I have nothing to say.””
The detective nodded.
“Fine.””
He reached into a folder.
“Then maybe this will help.””
He placed an old document on the table.
Not a readable copy.
Just enough for Richard to recognize it.
Richard looked confused.
“What is that?””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“The original house renovation report.””
Richard frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
The detective answered:
“The room with the purple door was sealed three years ago.””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
“Sealed?””
“Yes.””
The detective’s eyes narrowed.
“Because someone reported hearing sounds from inside after Lily disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
Richard whispered:
“Who reported it?””
Detective Harris looked at Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa’s face went completely still.
Then May quietly spoke.
“Mommy.””
I looked down.
“What?””
She pointed toward Vanessa.
“She was there when Lily was hiding.””
Everyone turned.
Richard stepped closer.
“What did you say?””
May looked innocent.
“She told Lily to be quiet.””
Vanessa’s expression finally broke.
May you like
And for the first time all night…
she looked truly scared.
